NUCW has called on other politicians to refrain from politicking on the privatisation of Zamtel because everything is being handled by credible and knowledgeable institutions.
NUCW general secretary Clement Kasonde said in an interview in Ndola yesterday that Mr Kambwili should stop misleading the workers on issues he does not fully understand.
“Why should the MP allege that some Zamtel workers have been forced to sign agreements. You can imagine he named a trade union which does not even exist at Zamtel. Let him do politics on other issues,” Mr Kasonde said.
He said Mr Kambwili should stop his rhetoric and utterances on the privatisation of Zamtel because he seems not to have any knowledge on what is happening regarding the agreements which workers have signed.
On allegations by Mr Kambwili that workers will lose 70 percent of their benefits once the company is partially privatised, Mr Kasonde said the collective agreement provides for early retirement when a worker reaches 55 years.
He said those retired on medical grounds are also entitled to three months basic pay on each year served.
Mr Kasonde said repatriation allowance and leave benefits will be tax- free.
He said the package is the same one negotiated for by the trade union when the company is insolvent.
“Where is the loss of 70 percent to be paid to workers? The union regrets the MP’s political outbursts,” Mr Kasonde said.

Here are the terms of separation as in the conditions of service.
1. 3 months salary per completed year and pro rata for uncompleted year.
2. 2 months pay in lieu of notice
3. 2 months pay repatriation
4. Leave days and overtime that may have been worked
However, the conditions that were applied in 1996 when Zamtel retrenched included 20 months pay as compesation for early termination of employment. The Union has not included this item in the latest pending retrenchment package. Kambwili may have a Point because 20months salary may amount to above K100M in many case. Reply for more details

It is true that MPs are there to represent the views of the very people that put them into power, but it is imperative that these MPs do so with the best intentions. The “honourable” MP appears to, like he usually does, make statements/comments on issues for which he has little or sound knowledge. I’m sure the old adage that says “make sure your brain is engaged before putting you mouth in motion” will serve as earnest reminder for our political leaders. Yes, it is right to ask, prod and even challenge the government of the day. But will all due respect, if an MP doesn’t have the full facts at hand or let alone unsure of some data, please resort to the old rule: you either go back and research, verify your soruces/findings and lastly just shut up!!

To start with clement how clean are you? you are on record of having signed a disclaimar on behalf of unionised worker who had intially refused to sign the form, who authorised you to do so? Those in management have a union that sits and look into their affairs not you kasonde. Remember kasonde that your out bursts have opened the inside of you. Can you explain how you obtained your grade twelve certifcate, how your performance at Zamtel staff college was, further more how you aquired your so called degree in law and from which university and why you can not be enorolled at the bar so that you start practising. Where are the oppostition leaders?. Why is Kambwili left alone to fight this battle?. The scam surrounding the partial privatisation of zamtel needs to be cross checked by the opposition leaderships. 1st of all Kambwili is only a politician entitled to his opinions. Once this Kambwili opens his mouth, well I have always liked him.
2ndly its clear to see that this Kasonde is enjoying so much media coverage lately. I can’t help thinking that its either leadership is going to his head or just a little moneys coming from the MMD so that the sale of Zamtel goes smoothly without a commotion from the workers. Kasonde surely is aspiring for political office like his former comrades. To some extent you can’t blame him except that he should concentrate on showing leadership especially that workers of Zamtel are at crossroads and unsure of their security as regards the package. He has already shown that he is a fool going by the manner he is conducting himself lately. Again you can’t blame.

Kasonde(NUCW-GS) don’t defend yourself.let us face the facts:You have not told workers how and when they will be paid and from which source.Is it everybody who will be paid or only those who will be retrenced? if its only the later what happens to the monies of those who will remain? will it be like the mines ? when you are asked to clarify these things to the workers you become emotional together with your president.There are alot of issues workers seek clarification on this zamtel sale which have made them apprehensive during this period. so allow those with voices to talk on their behalf.Its becoming clear now that you chaps have your hands oiled in order to subdue the workers until the deal goes thru .
