The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) says it has the capacity to conduct a comprehensive voter registration exercise in good time for the 2011 tripartite elections.

Chairperson, Florence Mumba, says the next voter registration will be announced as soon as logistics are put in place.

Justice Mumba says the commission is currently making final touches before announcing the programme for the voter registration exercise.

She told ZNBC in an interview that additional staff will be employed on temporary basis to beef up the country wide exercise.

Justice Mumba also said the ECZ has received overwhelming cooperation on the matter from political parties and the civil society.

And President Rupiah Banda has urged all eligible Zambians to register as voters ahead of the 2011 general elections.

The President has also asked opposition leaders to ensure that their supporters register as voters in the run-up to next year’s tripartite elections.

Mr. Banda was speaking at State House in Lusaka when he swore in former High Court Judge, Essau Chulu, as Commissioner of the Electoral Commission of Zambia.

The President said he is confident that Judge Chulu will add value to the electoral process.

And speaking when he swore in Zambia’s new Ambassador to Sweden, Anne Mutambo, President Banda urged the new envoy to strengthen co-operation between the two countries.

Mr. Banda said this is because Sweden is an important coorperating Partner, which continues to support Zambia’s development programmes.

Mrs. Mutambo was until her appointment Director of International Coorperation in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

  1. Good work Ms. (or Mrs.?) Mumba – there should be no obstacles when it comes to registering voters. The easier the voting process, the smoother the elections…the slimmer the chances of rigging.

  2. What would be great if the exercise could be extended to those of us out of the country. inclusion would be a plus to the Zambian democracy.

  3. We need well-meaning people as commissioners at ECZ, not people whose origin is dubious.

  4. why not use our reg cards as the one point for registering voters countrywide and then enable voters to inform where they live for voting purposes as an all year thing electronically for those that have email, by post for others etc. rather than rushing the process in one year. this would avoid the need to print voters cards every 5 years and we would widen the net of potential voters.

  5. LT please check your service providers. Your site is unusually slow and making difficult for perusal. Just notice the drop in bloggers.

  6. Yes LT, #9 is right. I’ve also been experiencing some difficulties to explore your site lately. At first I thought it was something to do with my link. Hope it gets better…

  7. My question, why shouldn’t Civil Society be responsible for appointing the Board to run Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ). The Board members should be representatives from all provinces. I just don’t want to see another Coloured up map of Zambia with statistics covering national parks and game reserves.

  8. Electoral Cheaters of Zambia(ECZ). Just another helping hand in rigging votes for which ever president is in office. “Cow”ards!!!!

  9. ECZ can you do something different for a change? Liase with the authorities to see how you can include Zambians in diaspora to participate in these elections? Use the respective embassies to let Zambians outside the country be part od the election. We need to start recognising the way the world is changing and be inclusive to Zambians abroad.

  10. Did you watch F.Mumba when the results started getting in favor of RB. Results from the bush. Just like a hunter smiles when he has seen its prey getting into his trap. Pretending as though he is not happy. I saw the hidden smile in her as though she was saying, Ya -you are fixed. Opposition start stratagising on how you are going to ensure elections are not rigged otherwise your efforts will be a waste of enrgy. Dont start planning in last minute and start opening containers, the time is now to lay your plans to stopt the rigging.
