Pact will crumble, predicts PF MP

Share

PATRIOTIC Front Mwense Member of Parliament Jacob Chongo has predicted that the United Party for National Development (UPND) and the Patriotic Front (PF) Pact will collapse four months from now because leaders of both parties are egoistic and want the presidency.

Speaking in an interview in Lusaka yesterday, Mr Chongo said it was because of the realisation that the pact would crumble that he was concentrating on campaigning for himself for the parliamentary seat and not based on either the PF or the UPND.

Commenting on reports that the UPND was considering to give the position of vice-president to a woman, preferably from Northern Province, to enhance its chances of winning the 2011 general elections, Mr Chongo said it was clear there was a rift in the pact.

“That pact will not hold, I am not worried about them and that is why I have ensured that I deliver to my constituency. I am campaigning for myself and not to wait for anybody,” he said.

Mr Chongo said PF leader Michael Sata and his UPND counterpart Hakainde Hichilema were egoistic and wanted the presidency at all costs.

Since none of the two was willing to serve under the other, Mr Chongo said that in the coming four months, the pact would be no more.

“The pact is definitely crumbling because the PF wants Mr Sata to be president and the UPND wants Mr Hichilema. Even the two leaders themselves are not ready to work under the other,” Mr Chongo said.

He said in 1991, people came up together to form the MMD on principle and not hatred for first Republican president Kenneth Kaunda.
Unlike in 1991 when the MMD was formed out of principle, Mr Chongo said for now the PF-UPND Pact was formed out of hatred for President Rupiah Banda.

The Zambia National Women’s Lobby Group (ZNWLG) commended the UPND for its decision to reserve a position of party vice-president for a female candidate.[quote]

ZNWLG executive director Tamara Kambikambi said in an interview in Lusaka yesterday, the decision by the UPND was welcome and appreciated it. She said the decision was in conformity with the international conventions on gender.

Ms Kambikambi said Zambia was a signatory to international gender conventions while at the same time ratified the Southern African Development Community protocol on gender.

Ms Kambikambi said in other bodies like the National Constitutional Conference, the nation had done well to ensure that there was equal representation in positions of authority saying the same principle should apply in political parties

  1. Such predictions are wild and baseless.Neither Sata or HH are interested in the presidency, they will be someone to be picked from the UNIP party.

  2. This is good prediction. I know Jacob chongo recently visited TB Joshua in the company of FTJ. He should have picked this from there. You are now Prophet Chongo.
I also agree with him the pact will not work at all. Its like a rodent and a cat playing together in the living room. Bravo MMD with RB.

  3. PACT kuya bebele…I thought divisions were only in MMD kanshi even in the PACT. I think this is not even a PACT but a PACKET Packed to go..hahaha Cobra Kuya bebele mu bwendo.SATA tawakatekepo icalo iwe walipwa..HH kabiye ukuteka ing’ombe kumushi…

  4. Sata’s eastern animal theory

TARRING the Chipata-Mfuwe Road is as good as tarring a road for the benefit of animals. This is according to one Michael Chilufya Sata, leader of the Patriotic Front (PF), a political party that is looking forward to ruling Zambia, including the Eastern Province.

In essence, the implication of Mr Sata’s statement is that Mambwe District is home to animals, which in itself means that even the entire human population of this area can effectively be referred to as animals.Or how else can one interpret Mr Sata’s criticism of President Rupiah Banda for flagging off the tarring of the Chipata-Mfuwe Road?

This kind of irresponsible statement cannot even be described as traditional cousinship; it is simply a dangerous type of politics, typical of Mr Sata…

  5. This kind of irresponsible statement cannot even be described as traditional cousinship; it is simply a dangerous type of politics, typical of Mr Sata and his newly-found protégé Hakainde Hichilema, leader of the once-upon-a time formidable United Party of National Development (UPND).

For now, Mr Hichilema does not come into the picture as he has enough problems justifying his leadership of the party he took over on the basis of being Tonga-speaking but which is now increasingly questioning his political shelf life.

Mr Sata, in his own wisdom, thinks President Banda should not have entertained the idea of tarring the Chipata-Mfuwe Road as it is of little significance, only serving to benefit animals. With this insensitive statement from a leader of a leading opposition party, it is…

  6. it is of little significance, only serving to benefit animals. With this insensitive statement from a leader of a leading opposition party, it is not difficult to understand why the people of Mambwe District are so upset with the PF leader.

Mr Sata’s point of view is downright insulting not only to the people of Mambwe but also to the entire Eastern Province. An insult to one easterner is an insult to all Easterners.Condemnation of Mr Sata’s kind of politics has come from a cross-section of the Zambian society, with the Malambo Cultural Association describing the statement as barbaric and retrogressive.

Traditional leaders from the Eastern Province, led by Paramount Chief Mpezeni of the Ngoni people, have been unanimous in their condemnation of the PF leader who usually has…

  7. ..the PF leader who usually has difficulties apologising for his numerous political gaffes.

Asked to apologise on his recent fallout with the easterners, Mr Sata has shown that he is the same old Sata who never changes his spots despite moving from the United National Independence Party (UNIP), Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) and now the PF.

    He is simply unchangeable.
Mr Sata remains the same man he was when houses of poor citizens were demolished in Kanyama Township; the same old Sata who was MMD national secretary when scores of defenceless Chawama Township residents were hacked by machete-wielding mobs in 2001; the same man who keeps changing goal posts to suit his political desires.Apologising, it appears, is not in Mr Sata’s vocabulary.

  8. Mr Sata claims that he can only apologise to the easterners if President Banda also flags off the tarring of many other roads in Zambia. What Mr Sata needs to know is that apologising for one’s wrongs does not take anything away from anyone; it is an exhibition of strength.

It is only in being able to identify one’s weakness that new levels of strength emerge, and apologising— genuine apology, in this case— is one of the ways in which people admit their weakness.Failure to apologise, therefore, only goes to show one’s arrogance when he is only a leader of an opposition political party.

  9. It is this kind of attitude that makes people begin to wonder what the likes of Mr Sata would do if they were given the honour of being at the helm of State power. Why does Mr Sata not take a leaf from President Banda who does not get scared of apologising or consulting when he sees that something has gone wrong? If Mr Sata needs a reminder of this, he will vividly remember that President Banda, at the height of the fuel crisis last year, apologised to the nation for the inconvenience that had been caused to motorists and productivity in general.Again, President Banda, in his typical fatherly way, went out of his way and travelled to the Western Province to meet the Litunga of the Lozi people after some politicians had attempted to put a wedge between the Government and the Westerners.

  10. Furthermore, the president recently visited chiefs from the Lambaland on the Copperbelt to consult following an impression that had been created by some disgruntled political hooligans that the Banda administration had sidelined the Lamba-speaking people. All these moves are a magnanimous show of true statesmanship. But in Mr Sata’s case, there is no room for being rueful once he has wronged people whom he claims to speak for.He says President Banda must flag off the tarring of all roads! Is that not wishful thinking, comrade Sata? Does PF’s utopian 90-day development agenda include commencement of tarring all roads in Zambia?Politics has no room for wishful thinking. It is about being realistic.

  11. The inability to be realistic is the very reason why Mr Sata has reneged on nearly all statements he made when trying to push specific political agendas.Leaders must surely be held responsible for misleading statements they make even when they do not really mean what they say.No wonder former president Frederick Chiluba, even at a time he was enjoying overwhelming support from the PF during his court cases, made a statement that summed up Mr Sata’s stand on many issues. At that time, Mr Sata, too, was enjoying Dr Chiluba’s unflinching support as the PF leader sought to defeat president Levy Mwanawasa in the 2006 elections.Despite the two being so close, Dr Chiluba said Mr Sata did not always mean what he said.

  12. That statement is true of Mr Sata today. He has turned his back to Dr Chiluba; he now accuses President Banda of being a tribalist when it is he who used tribalism to the fullest in 2006 although he pretends to have overcome this complex in his perceived pact with Mr Hichilema.

When President Banda promised that the Government would work on the Mongu-Kalabo Road, the PF’s stance was indifferent, a pointer to how Mr Sata’s party would not want the westerners to receive development as it would, in PF’s narrow view, give political impetus to the ruling MMD.

  13. The penchant for politicising every developmental issue is what is increasingly making the PF irrelevant to the right-thinking members of the UPND who are opposed to Mr Sata’s personal pact with Mr Hichilema. At first, Mr Sata had reservations with the tarring of the Mongu-Kalabo road and yet he is pretending to love the people of the province by appointing Inonge Wina as the party’s chairperson.Mr Sata never ceases to amaze. This time, the PF leader does not want the Chipata-Mfuwe Road to be tarred because its importance will only be felt by animals.

  14. What cheek!
That was a purely tribal statement to try and incite other tribes against not only President Banda but also all Easterners. It is not the first time Sata has attempted to excite tribal outrage among Zambians. The peaceful people of Zambia must refuse to be used by any politician who does not mean well.Desperation to lead Zambia should not drive one to such dangerous and offensive extents of equating the people of Eastern Province to animals.Mr Sata’s failure to apologise only confirms how lowly he regards the people of that province. He is one person who never fails to take advantage of any situation to champion a tribal agenda with the perceived hope of gaining political mileage. He’s done it before and The Post newspaper has been a great follower of Mr Sata’s divisive…

  15. In 2006, in a vain attempt to malign president Mwanawasa, Mr Sata did the best he could to gain from Dr Chiluba’s prosecution and rally the Bemba’s behind him.In this excerpt from a September 13, 2006 editorial, The Post wrote:“Sata and his friends should not be allowed to turn crime into a virtue. And we appeal to all Bemba-speaking people of goodwill not to be misled by these evil demagogues who seem to all the time be on the side of criminals.“We believe that fragmenting our country into tribal and regional politics will not help us move forward and deal with the many problems and challenges facing our people.

  16. Sata, that unchanging governor in UNIP, national secretary in MMD, unelected leader in PF, and defacto leader of the PF/UPND pact is the same old man as described by The Post.In his latest edition of political theatrics, this animal theory will surely haunt Mr Sata for many years to come. Strength of character consists in the ability to control one’s emotions and not in the state of being a prisoner of one’s emotions.

  17. #5 thru 17. You need to observe yourself. All the trash you wasted on this blog can be sumed up in one sentence,”ka paso kunta umwela”.

  18. who will vote for sata??? Even if everyone does not want to talk about tribalism but its real and exists in zambia. eastern northen luapula no vote for sata..sata won copperbelt coz chiluba helped..and southen provice is for hichilem who wants to stand as presidential candidat..central province hates sata like hell..

  19. Observer, you think you know how to write. why take so much space with this trash of yours, you are so boring that you are even annoying the readers of L.T.

  20. Chongo just come back to Kantanshi you are wasting our time. I asked mum in Mukamansala village, Chief Kashiba how you were performing. She said you are worse than useless

  21. Why are we wasting so much time when we have a presidential material on the blog (Mr Observer)? the one who will atleast spend so much time wrting POEMS to his friends from school. All we need is to serve our mother Zambia. I don’t think its wise to frustarte every effort that is made by politicians. All MY GOD.

    We need to be served!

  22. A PACT of two self imposed leadership that is not clear on issues, not proven historically risk-adjusted, measured across a broad spectrum of criteria and without a record of holding best practices and building upon them is a fallacy. When these norms are missing in party politics, members become disillusioned and susceptible in in political competition as we beginning to see defection starts rocking PF.

  23. Veteran, saying the word “sorry” is not easy at all.It takes a lot of strength to say this particular word so only the powerful people can say it and the weak have no strength to say it.To the contrary, the general belief is that saying “sorry” implies that one is weak.

  24. #29
Senior Citizen- Talk about a kettle calling a pot black. If HH and Sata are self imposed leaders where does that Mr. Rupiya Banda? You cadres why do you send your senses in reccess? I remember when KK refused to repeal article 4 of the Repulican Consititution to allow for the return of Multipartism, you cadres danced saying ba matipa(MMD) balala. Then under pressure KK changed his mind and accented to the repeal, you the same people danced again ba matipa balala. In short you have no will to use your brains to distinguish sense from nonsense. You will believe everything just to keep your job at the expence of hard working but heavily taxed Zambians. Am sure GRZ/MMD pays hefty allowances just to write the trash you do to protect them(MMD).

  25. chongo dont waste your money, dont even think of campaigning again because you not gonna win and at what ticket you gonna stand? may be MMD and i dont think so, if its independent you not gonna make it because you have done nonthing for your constituence and i know how the luapula people are esp. lukwensa, mwense and lubunda they mean what they say. Please take my advince if you are smart

  26. Iwe chimudala wafunta or what? There is little thinking in your head coz you are interested in making yr own pocket heavy, kawalala. Just resign and join the senseless MMD party. Are you telling us that you are a prophet or what. Pliz shut yr useless mouth and get out. To me, all what you are saying is nonsense coz you just a job seaker. Waba etoloshi…kolwe wampanga iwe.

  27. HH has refuted the PACT being crumbling. This PF member will not stand on PF ticket. Sata does not want selfish members in PF

  28. MMD is really desperate HH has said it clearly in today’s post that there was no such a meeting uluse mayoooooo ba mudya belka

  29. Naimwe ba LT you are MMD carders. Try to balance your reporting with what is obtained in the Post. It seems your source is Times of Zambia. Do your own sourcing of information and don’t rely on Plagiarism. You will be duped if you just depend on the state owned media. Some times it is even hard to know whether you are balancing your reporting. May be you are just a baby of Times of Zambia? The Post has a voice of HH about the pact and HH has put in clear that the George Kunda is behind those allegations. Please be reminded that you will never go any where by being a bootlicker of the MMD. Any way, I congratulate you for analyzing Rb as the worst president.

  30. Time will tell for the pact and every individual is free to give an opinion. Power, influence and authority are all sweet and it is difficult to let go. What if RB decides to give the VP job to a woman? I do agree that we need to be gender sensitive but on the other hand it is about competences and not chromosomes and hormones. Yes, we need more women to take part in politics but the playing field should always be level. But is it level in Zambia? MMD, this is the time for you to evaluate the status-quo. The pact, this is the time to inform the people who is going to be the presidential candidate. I shall keep my retina wide open and my ears closed. Good luck to all parties.

  31. The Mwense PF MP will live to regret. He has been bought for a few million promises and kurudas. How can he wish the Pact to crumble instead of finding ways to strengethen it. No wonder democracy will not grow. Most of these so called political leaders not principled. Its all about politics of benefits and stomach as old Daniel puts it. Defections day in day out. What a shmaeful way of doing politics. Pipo should join politics based on principles. Those who are defecting from one party to another should not be entertained as they are there to just line their pockets. Its high time we set standards and say no to this and that type of politiking.

  32. HH has refuted claims of the PACT crumbling. No such meeting as to find a woman vice president took place. why the misinformation is this a sign of fear

  33. This is the time to make money say anything about the opposition and make sure its in the media then you will get good cash from the good leaders after 2011 no brown envelops everything goes back to normal. Dont tell me that guys like observer dont know what really happening in our beloved country, they know very well but AMOBALILA ITS JOB. We can talk ponta do anything they will still support their BEROVED ALAAABEEE. Kuti wapena pa Zed

  34. Wishful thinking, wishful thinking, wishful thinking. If dreams were horses all of us will be riding one. The PF Pact should, will and must survive at all costs for Zambians to hand ounto themselves Power.

    Viva the Catholic Church.

  35. all i pray now is 50%+1 should go thru.this means if pact fails to let pf leader first and hh vip in the next grz and hh president in 2016.then pf will still go thru if 50%+1 goes thru.because pf cannot win in the first round but i suspect they might win on the rerun since pf and upnd are partners

  36. The reason why HH has refuted is because he has been caught panties down, Why did those UPND callers in mazabuka question the Post over the coverage of Sata. The only reason why they did so was because tonga feesl sidelined in the PACT, they(tongas) thought that since Sata has NO “degree”. HH will run the show..

ALL of you Supporting the PACT remember if Sata is made President of the PACT , tongas will not vote for him..this is painfully true..
I have always said HH is NOT a tonga bull, the guy has feathers on him… he should have done better than this..

  37. The pact has already crumbled, there is no question about that. Come 2011, it will be MMD’s victory yet again. Sata is painfully unfit to govern any nation on earth in this modern era.

  38. The message that UPND will reserve the position of party VP for a woman cannot just pass unchanllenged. This is a very important position and should the party win national elections, the implication is that the would party VP would certainly become republican VP. I am not against having a woman VP. I would even love to have a female republican president for as long as she has the qualities and attributes to be one. I have worked under several female managers and I did not have problems with that. But what I am against is to reservind positions based on gender or just for the sake of wanting to win votes. Such important positions should be contested for without regard for gender. Men and women should square it out based on qualities.

  39. If they can hurry up and pick a president we are tired of living in limbo not knowing whether we are ready to be lead by Sata or HH. The truth of the matter is the pact should not fool itself into believing that Zambians can accept whoever will be chosen. As some bloggers said yesterday, the only solution here is a neutral candidate, but can HH and Sata accept that never!!!

  40. Ndobo, do you have balls yourself??? The way you go on and on about HH not having balls, looks like you are equally castrated for birds of the same feathers flock 2gether, for how else would you know that HH has no balls.

  41. So it seems every the PACT has sent MMD and its boot lickers shivering? Just wait and see, MMD or sole UNIP kuyabebele. Ba MMD nabalwala shiki polomya coz of the PACT. I would rather be ruled by HH or Sata than these animals in MDD .

  42. While it is possible that this pact may win the election we run the risk of having a government that is in perpetual paralysis. We assume that the only vexing issue is that of the presidency but we ignore other positions that are also important. E.g. Who will be Minister of Home Affairs, Defence, Foreign Affairs…? Who will be Army Commander, Inspector General of Police etc……If they are really interested in running the country for our benefit they should sign an MOU of sorts that clearly elaborates how they intend to govern and to which we shall hold them to account….Else it will be daily squabbles like we have seen with ZANU-PF and MDC…

  43. MMD why are craving to know who the president of the pact is????? let them keep it a secret untill the nomination day then MMD will not know where, when and how to attack the pact. Now its HH you after Sata AKUKANGANI and you think you will break the packed mind you the more cry and Ponta the harder the pact becomes all the best

  44. If the pact is not on its knees, how come you never see HH and Sata together and jointly producing policies that will take the country forward? Yes it might be strategic for them not to announce who the leader of the pact will be, though personally I feel it is a form of cowardice, but surely joint policy statements on how they will govern the country should they be elected would be welcome? Does anybody know if the two parties both have shadow cabinets and if so how are they working together to formulate policy at present or will that be done sometime near the election in 2011?

  45. apparently this MP does not think, i wonder why they choose him as MP. this is a pact not one Party. these guyz sata and hh jioned together to work together to win but not to compete for presidency. this simply means that the upnd and pf are still seperate whoevr gets high votes for presidency become the president. but if they both loss then they can total up their votes to fight against mmd. thats main reason of the pact. you shud go back to school.

  46. mr sata is just finishing himself.how do you comment on everything fight with everyone.let him deal with real issues and advise the gvt and in better way as people need a lead who inspires.i think hh should think twice regarding pact.hh is still fresh and i think he can make a better president in future.

  47. mr sata is just finishing himself.how do you comment on everything fight with everyone.let him deal with real issues and advise the gvt and in better way as people need a leader who inspires.i think hh should think twice regarding pact.hh is still fresh and i think he can make a better president in future.

  48. it is so shallow mr chongo.you are shallow.you will be remembered for nothing .sata has been a leader ,and not some small time underground miner given an opportunity.the least an MP can do is understand how democracy works ,unfortunately democracy is still amisnoner to a large sect of our people, maybe that is why in botswana where they dont elect a present the people say democracy is how people at that time understand it.and the way i see we understand it in zambia ,democracy is having some small opportunity to make some money .for now these loike u chongo are right.oh

  49. I think this talk is ill timed. we know when to reveiew our president. to be frank, zambians won’t care whether it will be HH or Sata to lead this nation as long as MMD is long gone, burried and forgotten. this will please our hearts!!! Viva Pact HH lets go, Sata lets go!
