Vernon Mwaanga is back in MMD NEC after re-organisation

Vernon Mwaanga (R)

THE ruling party, MMD, has re-organised itself by bringing into the National Executive Committee (NEC) former national secretary Vernon Mwaanga, Education Minister Dora Siliya, former Nyimba Member of Parliament (MP) Chembe Nyangu, and Albert Chifita and dropping its deputy national secretary Jeff Kaande.

The party has also appointed a political mobilisation taskforce to rejuvenate the party and come up with a “winning formular” for the 2011 elections.

Briefing journalists at the party secretariat in Lusaka yesterday, national secretary Dr Katele Kalumba said the decisions were made during a NEC meeting chaired by President Banda at State House yesterday.

Dr Kalumba said the NEC formed a quorum and senior members perceived as the party’s black sheep like MPs for Chilanga Ng’andu Magande, Chongwe MP Sylvia Masebo and Western Province chairperson Simasiku Namakando were in attendance.

He said Mr Mwaanga and Mr Chifita were nominated as trustees. Mr Mwaanga replaces the late Frank Moyo while Mr Chifita fills a vacancy.

Ms Siliya replaces the late party spokesperson, Benny Tetamashimba, while Mr Nyangu replaces Mr Kaande, who has been dropped.

Dr Kalumba could not disclose why Mr Kaande has been dropped, but wished him well, saying the party will re-assign him to meet his expectations and those of the Zambian people.

“Mr Kaande has been a reliable deputy national secretary. I wish him well wherever he will have an opportunity to further his (political) career,” Dr Kalumba said.[quote]

He said the MMD is confident that Mr Nyangu, a former diplomat, will project the ruling party positively and defend Government policies.

Dr Kalumba said the ruling party would like its members to understand Government public policy and bring to the attention of the people what President Banda has done for Zambians.

He said President Banda has demonstrated good leadership qualities by getting Zambia out of its economic crisis and steering growth when the global economy was in recession.

Dr Kalumba said the MMD would like its members to defend President Banda’s legacy based on what he has done, as well as what they scored under the leadership of the late President Mwanawasa.

He stressed that credit should go to the MMD on whatever achievements a president scores because they do so on that platform.

Dr Kalumba said the political mobilisation taskforce, whose members he could not disclose, will bring the MMD closer to the people where this has not been done. Dr Kalumba said the taskforce will also come up with constructive ideas to rejuvenate the party ahead of the 2011 elections.

“The political mobilisation taskforce will comprise people with the experience of preparing for elections. We will also bring in experienced blood and new blood. It’s our hit group because it will come up with a winning formular (for the 2011 elections),” Dr Kalumba said.

He said this committee will also be tasked to attract new members to the ruling party because they want to infuse new ideas from outside and within its rank and file, too.

Dr Kalumba said the date for MMD convention and other internal elections will only be known after costing has been done and other logistical issues have been taken into consideration.

He said a committee headed by the treasurer has been tasked to come up with the detailed costing to undertake these elections. A report will be presented to the next NEC meeting during which the venue for the convention will be decided.

Dr Kalumba said the party will launch a membership renewal in Lusaka on February 13, 2010, to be followed by a nationwide exercise on March 6.

Meanwhile, Dr Kalumba has described as misplaced concerns by Patriotic Front president Michael Sata that the decision by the NCC that a presidential candidate should be a holder of a first degree is targeted at him.

Dr Kalumba said it is unfortunate that Mr Sata thinks that the NCC could conspire to exclude him from contesting elections.

He said the NCC was only exercising its mandate based on the recommendations of the Wila Mung’omba-led Constitution Review Commission.

Dr Kalumba said if Mr Sata has a degree as claimed by PF secretary general Wynter Kabimba in the private media, there was no cause for him to worry because it will be verified.

“If he has got a degree there is no need to worry, it will be certified. If he hasn’t got one he can secure one on-line,” he said.

Dr Kalumba, who is a member of the NCC, said he was pleasantly surprised to hear old freedom fighters during plenary discussions advocating improvement of credentials for leadership.

He said the freedom fighters said this is what they fought for because they would like their children to aspire for good credentials.

“It is a bit paranoid to think that the whole country is thinking about you. This may not be the case,” he said.

  1. 3. This is confusing. Aren’t these positions elective at their convention? These guys have no idea about democracy.

  4. I REMEMBER VERY WELL WHEN MY FATHER USED TO PUSH US TO GO TO SCHOOL AND WE USED TO WALK LONG DISTANCE ON EMPTY STOMACH. MEANWHILE THE LAZY AND DULL CHAPS COULD LAUGH AT US FOR ATTENDING FREE EDUCATION UNDER KK’s TIME IN PREFERENCE FOR HUNTING. YES WE USED TO ENJOY BUSH MEAT BUT ELDERLY PIPO USED TO SAY THAT ONE DAY ALL THE ANIMALS ARE GOING TO FINISH AND SOCIETY IS GOING TO CHANGE TO A SITUATION WHERE ONLY THOSE EDUCATED ONES WILL MAKE & FIND IT EASY. ALL THIS ADVISE WAS FALLING ON DEAF EARS TO SOME PIPO WHO OPTED TO MAKE NAMES AT THAT TIME. SO SUCH PIPO SHOULD NOT CRY TODAY BY PRETENDING THAT EDUCATION HAS ALWAYS BEEN EXPENSIVE IN ZAMBIA,NO. THEY ACTUALLY HAVE THEMSELVES TO BLAME. YES, I AGREE WITH KATELE THAT THEY SLHD OBTAIN SOME THROU ON-LINE IF THEY CAN & STOP CRYING LIKE BABIES.

  5. One day! I mean just one day! Vernomous Johnson Mwanga will answer for his criminal activities…! Just that one day will be the sweetest!!

  6. Hey Commander! Even if education was free, it did not mean that everyone had to get degrees!! There are only two Universities in Zambia and the current leadership gives no toss about education considering that they have a failure leading the ministry. Moreover University education is not encouraged by the same people purporting to be for it. We are talking about the constitution here and not your education my friend. You may have gotten a degree but you can not claim to be more intelligent than anyone else just because you obtained a piece of paper! Grow up!!!

  7. :)>-:)>-:)>-\: The great party :d/:d/:d/ is re-positioning itself to deal a death blow to the fragile pact come 2011. Meanwhile bickering continues in the crumbling pact with half truths and blue lies to attempt to discredit the government being the order of the day. Sata and HH will be having sleepless nights and hysterically resorting to insults and lies even more. Eat your heart out, pact! The hour has come!

  8. i thought i would read about jeff kande.mwanawasas group is slowly being purgued.good they thought they owned the country.yes we wish u well jeff.however the damage has been.thanks to the likes of kaande.they dont even trust eachother.

  9. Bravo NEC!
The people’s Party is battle ready for issues driven winners’ Decision 2011 campaign.Every mover & shaker is alive to the task of an ambitious targeting campaign drive.RB too busy steering the nation to prosperity has the spirited multi-level & multidisciplinary political machinists to obliterate any political figment on his & ruling MMD party way.The reorganization, mobilization and realignment towards a landslide has started bottom up at the grassroot. Those not ready to defend the party and the institution of the Presidency have some weeks to get out of the way for the spirited and loyal political machinists. The MMD political war rooms will be manned by selfless strategists institutionally showered with every logistical support supplemented with land & air political war…

  10. What has VJ done for his tonga people, nill…This old guy is a toy boy in the hands of whoever is in power. What are these guys going tell the Aimighty God when they stand before HIM on judgement Day,I fear for such people that are so earthly consumed, that they do not give a care for human plight.VJ..repent or you perish.

  11. Jeff Kaande had it coming and I thought I could see this coming. Well, I don’t know much about Chifita but I hope he is willing to listen to people and face the truth with his boss. But Katele has tried against all odds to stay clear of trouble and has of late been quite sensible. Well, I hope they can find a way of getting Prof. Chirwa into their team and learn from his brilliant ideas. We really need proper new blood and not just any scumburg. RB, please find a way of bringing in Prof. Chirwa even if people accuse you of nepotism, bring this man into the team somehow and get his vision.

  12. Its surprising that graduates are being attacked as though we are the cause of all this. Where were you when we will not sleeping but jobbing whole nite long. We saw you sleeping and we told you not to sleep. Why sleepth when work pileth. Now you are there looking for online degrees. you end up getting one in prostitution be careful. Hhahahahahahahaha, thank you NCC we need to develop and look back 45 yrs of independence, we are still being ruled by FFFFFF (6 Fs). Some of these diplomas and certificates and other qualification you get when you fail to get to university, its a shame. Viva UNZA, Viva CBU, Viva OPEN, Viva Advertist, Viva AIBT. UNZA and CBU are the best institutions for shimbi (mentals), the only ones to lead this nation. Crying will not solve a problem just start nite sch

  13. Degrees must apply in all these; DCs,PS, MP, Human Resource, DEOs, Headteachers, drivers to PS, Teachers, Journalist, in all development base act ivies. Zambia here we come!!!!**==:)):-@=d>

  14. @MMMD (17 & 18) No one is insulting Graduates. All what people are saying is not all degrees come with great leadership.Let us not waste TAX payers money on stupid clauses like the one in question. Am sure, even when you as a graduate searches your soul, you gonna realize that you cant govern not even province despite being INSHIMBI from campus.Check your language on graduates from other learning institutes. I wonder what you have gained from your degree. To me, your way of writing aligns with those who have to UNZA or CBU, but with less or no achievement in life then go on bragging about it after a few tin of Chibuku. My friend grow up. Let people decide who they want to lead them. I think your father is not a graduate, but a more sensible citizen than you, & am sure he’s achieved more.

  16. #20: No one said that all degree holders will be presidents. Democratic elections will still be there to enable us the citizenry to choose the best and wise leaders among the thousands of degree holders. We just want people who will understand basic issues, not the 90 days nonsense passing for national politics. During the colonial days the colonialists set Standard 4 as a qualification for certain high political offices. In this modern day and age the bar has to be raised.

  17. 15 Have you had a chance to speak to Prof Chirwa? He is only good at his speciality of writing articles on cars. Did you see the article that he wrote on Zesco and electricity in Zambia last year at the height of the electricity shortages (which have since been resolved by the relevant experts at Zesco)? Absolute disaster. I have met him and I can assure you that he is not as inspiring as a politician as you think. Keep him away from MMD, he is certainly one of the unsuitable degree holders for political office. But he can come back to set up a car assembly plant in Zambia if you like!

  18. Rumour has it that Professor Patrick Mvunga, Justice Esau Chuulu and Dr Rodger Chongwe are now working on a piece of legislation to outlaw PACTS. Zambians, we are being attacked from all fronts mwebantu. Beware of these mikukulu who want to divide the nation for their selfish ends. BenaZambia segukani mitu tapapata.

  19. Senior Citoyen, are you back in Washington? Does it mean that the First lady, Mama Thandiwe Banda, is no longer in Los Angeles? Has she continued her globe-trotting jaunt?

  20. I thought positions like Natinal Secretary and his deputy are elective at the conversion. Unless if the holder of the office has a case. It seems Kaande must havecommitted a case inMMD which we are not told. MMD are paniking in the end mistakes are made, please MMD follow your rules. VJ will only stop his tricks when MMD loses elections in 2011 and hope that he will not resign to join the pact.

  21. MMD under RB in a binding alliance with people on the ground from all corners of the country is turning the corner to a much more political season.Spirited MMD strategists are going to evaluate what the MMD victory crusade need to do to get timely intelligence and early warnings so they don’t face situations that would inhibite the vision for a sweeping enemy imparing landslide victory in Decision 2011.MMD has a very weak and scattered brain enemy whose thrill and fame is only in insulting Tabloid editorials and cosmetic verbal worded PACT.Zambia is bigger than these sore losers.

  22. Its not stunning to see the constanation in these feeble titular opposition parties crying foul that “rulingg MMD is trying to kill the PF-UPND PACT”.

These are baseless cries of sore losers having realized that the “Golden rule” of conservative era politics is here plus the fact that the MMD hierarchy leadership is now of those who have spent almost all their career lives in the Lusaka grassroot political strata, scares losers to death more when 4 times ballot rejects like Sata factors in demographic facts. Pol 101.

  23. Sata be reminded that its time for strategy and not failed insults. MMD has shifted to the winning grassroots’ politics around the country before emerging on the national platform. Votes are not in insulting editorials but the grassroot awaiting to be converted on issues.

  24. Though the rules of the game is not to play with kids gloves, MMD has better things to do towards its 2011 landslide Victory than swinging against a shell of a PACT. Who doesn’t know that the so called PACT merely exists in the mouth of two tribal leaders and the editorial column of an embattled tabloid seeking a partner in white color crime of which they are unethically sneefing for in any political demagoguery?

  25. Politics is not a game of sissies that are scared of own shadows and failures on issues. Now they are expecting MMD to treat them like they are cousins. With dignity and issues MMD is getting back to the Lusaka grassroots and around the country. RB and the re-assembled party structures under William Banda understand Lusaka compounds and grassroots politics. If anything they are better connected than late technocratic Mwanawasa. They have spent almost all their career lives in the Lusaka grassroot politics and this scares Sata to death.

  26. I wonder where the Senior Citezen lives. Is he in Zambia or abroad? MMD propaganda will not help them. If election were called in 3 months from now. The grassroot you tauking about will vote for Change.

  27. People are not saying to own a degree is wrong it is good.but it is not every one with a degree can make a good leader. Look at RB and his Veep inspite of having those degrees they claim to have the country is in a bad state. Some of the people with degrees have also failed to manage their homes properly how can they manage the country? and more over in Zambia there is too much news of leakages and some of the degrees have been obtained that way and I believe that those with true degrees dont bost but those with fake ones yayayaya! So Mr.Commander be careful how you say certain things,or else the un Educated ones will leaving or stop voting because they don’t care just like they did not care at the time you were going to school and obtained the degree in leakage.

  28. Village Concept,

You must be having an illusionary mind.I have been a journalist before and retain deep ties with the the media fraternity covering these politicians. The last time Hon.Mwaanga stepped on a campaign trail is during the Chitambo bye-election for a day with President Banda. He has never been to any campaign since 2006.Ask the Watchdog who carried that story for 5 minutes and then instantly withdrew it when they realised the man was busy in his office.I fail to undersnad your myth that winning a national election could zero on an individual.Such thinking is too shallow and risker for the real world to count on as a counterveiling move.

  30. election rigger- in-chief VJ has been brought back to devise a strategy .cannot we get past this ridiculous people.Don’t we have any new blood in politics without having to recycle this guys who peaked about gazillion years ago.please if this is all there is on this planet god take me now.

  31. #39, Thats a stopper in VJs head…to prevent his brains from spilling out!!
Bloggers, have you not noticed that VJ is always back mu NEC just about this time (election period)?
As for Kande, serves him right! Bootlicking never takes you anywhere. This is a lesson for some Bootlickers we know.

  32. ? 37 ask sata ..he knows VJ..I REAPEAT VJ IS A BIG BOY…GO TO YOU TUBE TYPE SATA SLUMS A BBC REPORTER..PLEASE WATCH THAT SHORT THING..THIS GOES TO ALL BLOGGERS

  33. VJ you should be ashamed. Pipo can not be talking from without. Master rigger you are. MMD (Mwadya Mweka Dad) surely you can’t be proud by winning without Mwanga. If 50% +1 is thru then Mwanga will be fired by MMD. Mwanga where is you patrotism? You will bring war to this peaceful nations. Do not take Zambians for granted. Enough is enough old boy

  34. The return of the greatest election rigger “VJ”. MMD is winning next year’s elections, 5 more year for Nya ma Soya. Tizavuti Mulungu eke……

  35. Njobvu Kazi, don’t glorify riggers. You the english say, “you fool people but can not fool all a the time” His end will be bad. If he can not see sense in what people talk then the God who hears the cry of the poor will stop him and others the would be riggers will a lesson. His end is near, the poor are crying to God for help. MMD will not be there to help him. Let 50% +1 go thru then it his tricks will not work.

  36. He looks more than a BIRD than a Human Being in the Photo. I doubt he will be there to rig the Elections. He is gone 6 feet under before 2011.

  37. Kwangalelo, you are correct that his time will come but for the time being, we will continue suffering becoz of pipo like him. There will never be a fair election as long as VJ is present in the ruling party. As you have pointed out, we will leave it to God to help us other wise we are in for it…

  38. There we go again, glorifying one person, fearing the unknown, how many of us here have seen VJ in action, atti “master rigger” what myth. The PACT should just mobilise and stop ignoring the big elephant in the room (PRESIDENT OF THE PACT), get past this impending bomb, before you allow a crack to happen, whether you like it or not Sata will continue to declare himself leader publicly. Why cant you just declare his candidacy then move to strategise and show UPND that its not over, HH is vice and there is still hope for them.

While the pact remains in limbo, MMD is re-organising, collecting on every disgruntled vote lost.

  39. :((VJ is back in order to rig the elections and for sure he will do. He’s a self confessed election strategist. With VJ by his side expect Bwezani to bounce back into plot 1

  40. ? 37 ask sata ..he knows VJ..I REAPEAT VJ IS A BIG BOY…GO TO YOU TUBE TYPE SATA SLUMS A BBC REPORTER..PLEASE WATCH THAT SHORT THING..THIS GOES TO ALL BLOGGERS

  41. MMD is comfirming peolpe’s claims of VJ being an election rigging master, why VJ now that ELECTIONS ARE AROUND THE CORNER, 2011 MM D should be carefull,we do’nt want blood shed becoz people are looking for change any rigging will cause blood shed. God for bid.
