Government intensifies flood mitigation efforts in Lusaka

Share

Government has deployed equipment and other logistics in areas that have been affected by floods in Lusaka city in order to safeguard lives and property.

Lusaka District Commissioner Christah Kalulu said government has also mobilized equipment from the defense forces to drain water in Kanyama, Chawawa and Mandevu constituencies in Lusaka.

Ms Kalulu, who is also Lusaka District Disaster Mitigation Committee Chairperson, said her committee has redoubled disaster mitigation efforts in the affected areas.

She was speaking in Lusaka’s Matero Township today when Stanbic Bank donated protective clothing, industrial bins and other wares worth K20 million towards the Disaster Risk Reduction Programme.

She has since implored residents in the flooded areas to take precautionary measures to avoid any outbreak of waterborne diseases.

And speaking at the same function, Stanbic Bank Managing Director, Joseph Chikolwa commended government for putting in place an effective Disaster Risk Reduction Programme in disaster prone areas.

Mr. Chikolwa has since appealed to other corporate entities to emulate his company and supplement government efforts in mitigating effects of floods in the city.

He said this in a speech read on his behalf by Stanbic Bank Director for Personal and Business Banking Nelus Agenbach.

Earlier, George Compound’s Lima Ward Plan Implementation Committee Chairperson, Gilbert Liswaniso said the township has not recorded any cholera cases since the onset of the rains owing to interventions put in place by his committee.

  2. funny this just after running an article about people complaining that pf mps this then the government is stepping up measures ala….

  3. #1 Mr. Nthwenu, indeed its an irony for LT to dose us with news that PF MPs are to blame for failing to mitigate the effects of floods. And then within a short space of time, the same people are saying Govt is responsible for flood control. Shows how Govt biased LT is. And for your information, three people died in Lusaka yesterday as they attempted to cross a stream using a makeshift bridge.

  4. What was Bwezani and his ass lickers doing in the dry season. The drainages should have been worked on during the dry season. Are the people at plot one so thick that they don’t understand to make hay whilst the sun is shinning. They are busy trading insults with the opposition.Do you need foriegn donors to work on your drainage system. The amount Bwezani spends on his useless travels could have help unclog those drainages.Wake up and stop settling scores with anybody with a different opinion Bwezani.

  5. No one care about Kayanya, Chawama and all other shanty compounds.Politicians are only interested in votes and not developing those areas. There is no drainage/99.5% of houses have no running water and yet these are the places that are highly populated.I hope something will be done to bring change in those places

  6. All that water going to waste! Come August to November there will be water shortages! Meanwhile in Egypt and Israel people are growing potatoes and lush water melons in the desert! Dubai golf greens are lush green 365 days a year! Once upon a time KK said that while flying over Zambia, he could hear God say, ‘Kaunda na bantu bobe muli fipuba.’ Our poverty is our choice because we can have a better life if we just put our heads together and stop bickering!

  7. The Saint you are a good thinker. They should preserve rain water for irrigation. They should come to Orlando and see what preserving rain water is. The city looks good because the local government has put in place a good system in preserving water. Right now Orlando is the number one visited city in USA because it looks beautiful. That chi blue water in Chawama and the one in Kalilkiliki are water reserve areas and many more should be created around the city.
