A game of Kabote turns tragic, man charged with murder

Share

The High Court sitting in Mongu yesterday sentenced a 24 year old man of Kalabo district to 25 years imprisonment with hard labour for one count murder.

Appearing before High Court Judge Eddie Sikazwe was Linowe Sibamba of Nalionwa village of Kalabo District who was being charged with murder contrary to section 200 cap 87 of the laws of Zambia.

On the 7th April 2007 at Nalionwa Habour in Kalabo District, Linowe- the accused found the deceased-Kalomo Kalomo in company with his four friends playing at the river a game called kabote and then asked them if he could join them.

After they refused to let him join them, Linowe grabbed them one by one dipped them in the water then lifted them up and threw them back in the water over the top of his head, behind him.

The court then later heard that the deceased was the last one to be thrown and he did not resurface on the water thereafter and that’s
when the accused warned the children not tell anybody or face being arrested by the police.

Iin Mitigation the accused pleaded with the court to show leniency on him as he is a first offender and that he is married with three children and that he has shown remorse to the offense.

In passing judgment Judge Eddie Sikazwe said the prosecution has proved without reasonable doubt the accused committed the crime and sentenced him to 25 years imprisonment with Hard Labour with effect of the day of his arrest.

  1. Never heard this Kabote game before, is’nt 25 yrs too old to play such games? I would’nt even dare Bunjee jumping when I was 25. Anyway, too bad for the deceased.

  2. What kind of game is this now? I guess this 25 year old had nothing better to do and now he will regret.People his age should be working not play such games with children,I feel sad for his family not for him.

  3. This game is palyed by thrusting each other in water. Its quiet enjoyable if one has the stamina. As for the deseased I am sure the guy was thrust hard in water. In some cases its some sort of summer saults.

  4. No. 1 – you are totally right. What is “kabote”? Please, LT, write articles which “everyone” can understand. It would help to dedicate just 1 sentence explaining what “kabote” is.

  5. this stroy is like note taking in university where the proffesor is in a rush. i don’t get anythind from this, LT editors should go back to school.
anyway, from a few points i got this shows that zambian people have nothing to do after school.the government should provide jobs to the people of the country after, why should a 25 years old man play a game instead of breing development and finding money to feed his family. UPND these are the things you should campaign over rather than urging who is going to be the HH or SATA. tell RB to look at this people and provide something for them even though there are in rural areas. poor leadership in zambia. day in and day out, leaders are just thinking how much i steal from that project that the investers are planing to do. *****S.

  6. the game is where by one person anya chishupu and then one person goes down in water to figure out who it is by trying to see where the bubbles are coming from. i hope you all know what kabote is now. deuces bane:)>-

  7. Why do people on this blog not get it? LT does not write these articles. Most of these come from ZANIS. They probably come in as automatic data feeds, unedited. You need to criticise amateur ZANIS reporting. What do you expect from a government owned/controlled news agency? First of all it was not clear that the deceased was a child. Infact the child’s age has not even been disclosed. Secondly, this Kabote game has not been explained. Poor journalism!!

  8. #8 You are right, the blame really lies with ZANIS and why does this government media employ such low calibre people. I guess even the so called controlling officers are of low quality indeed and no wonder the government just fails to delivers on its mandate. Probably most ZANIS staff are corruptly employed as seen by the quality of their reporting
