First lady Thandiwe Banda has called for concerted efforts in addressing major issues affecting women in the country.
Mrs. Banda says this is the only way women can play a role towards the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals (MGDs) especially goal number three that aims at promoting gender equality and women empowerment.
Speaking in Lusaka today when she launched the Habitat for Humanity Women Build 2010 project, Mrs. Banda noted that women have an inner resilience
and strength that is key to moral, psychological and economic health of a country.
She said it is for this reason that government and other cooperating partners should work closely and ensure that all imbalances that affect effective women’s participation in national programmes are fully addressed.
She cited lack of decent accommodation, low education levels, access to food and quality health facilities as some of major challenges that women
in the country have continued to face.
The First Lady has further commended Habitat for Humanity for alleviating housing poverty among the vulnerable groups especially women and children
in the country.
And Habitat for Humanity Zambia Patron Dr. Kenneth Kaunda disclosed that the organisation has so far built 2,200 housing units for the orphaned and
vulnerable people in different communities across the country.
Dr. Kaunda said there is need for Zambians to support initiatives that are targeted at uplifting the living standards of the less privileged in society.
He has since pledged that his organisation will continue to supplement government’s efforts in providing low cost but decent and affordable houses
for people.

Let the women prove themselves!
They are so many issues to be addressed in that country, you give coverage to the First Lady unnecessary, if she wants to help the women let her have her own projects, when are Zambians going to learn, we dont read about Sarah Brown everyday on front page, and yet she does a lot of work for charity.
Ba thandiwe muli shani na ba mudala benu?
Not very young as potrayed.
You are spot on Thandiwe…go for it and inspire our Zambian women folk to be high achievers. Beside, the Milennium Development Goals are not beyond reach.
“””She cited lack of decent accommodation, low education levels, access to food and quality health facilities as some of major challenges that women in the country have continued to face.”””
Thandiwe, you are a hypocrite who should learn what your role as First Lady is. Nobody in your position talks like that, stop insulting people and DO something to alleviate the suffering. Maybe then you will redeem yourself and get some respect…
FORMER Patriotic Front secretary general Edward Mumbi says he will petition the candidature of PF leader Michael Sata in next year’s elections if the latter does not set the record straight on many issues about him.
Mr Mumbi said Mr Sata should inform the nation on the facts of his alleged criminal case which led to his imprisonment.
He said if Mr Sata fails to explain, he will petition courts during nominations for the presidency.
Mr Mumbi said the country should start the real debate over the most important issues in politics and the discussion should continue well past the 2011 general elections.
He said it is time to spark public debate over moral values in politics and how broadly and deeply they should be defined.
“Mr Sata questioned in what capacity I will petition…
“I want to state that under criminal procedure, there is nothing like a case expiring. My lawyers have advised me that the fact that it was a criminal matter and was not prosecuted made it possible for re-opening in a court of law,” he said.
Mr Mumbi said he will, through his lawyers, subpoena the Electoral Commission of Zambia for Mr Sata’s last declaration documents of 2006 and 2008 presidential elections.
He was speaking at a joint press briefing with two other former PF secretaries general Charles Chimumbwa and Edwin Lifwekelo.
They accused Mr Sata of promoting politics of hatred and immoral debate.
They advised Mr Sata to stop promoting bad politics aimed at promoting anarchy in the country.
They said Mr Sata should be mindful when attacking fellow politicians as they…
Mr Mumbi said it is unfortunate that other civil society organisations have not condemned Mr Sata’s attack on Mr Kunda.
He said Mr Sata’s attack on the Vice-President was an embarrassment not only to Mr Kunda but also to his family.
“So what will happen if Mr Kunda decides to respond to Mr Sata’s statement? What do you think will happen when Mr Kunda decides to call Mr Sata names? The civil society organisations will not hesitate to condemn Mr Kunda,” Mr Mumbi said.
He said Mr Sata should exhibit high moral standing and promote decent politics by engaging in cultured politics.
Mr Mumbi said the country will not develop if Zambians embrace politicians who do not talk about moral values but rather are bent on promoting uncultured politics.
He said people aspiring for…
He said Mr Sata should not take advantage of Zambians by allegedly spreading falsehoods.
And Mr Mumbi alleged that Mr Sata’s bad way of politics is bound to destroy Catholic archbishop Telesphore Mpundu’s calling.
He said Bishop Mpundu, as a church leader, should preach high moral values.
Mr Mumbi said it is sad that Bishop Mpundu accused Dr Chiluba of attacking the Catholic Church when the former President revealed that Mr Sata had children with the clergyman’s sister.
He said it is wrong for Archbishop Mpundu to associate his sister and Mr Sata to the Church.
“The revelations were brought to the public domain not for Dr Chiluba to discredit the Church as claimed by the bishop but rather as an illustration to epitomise Mr Sata’s claims of being on higher moral ground…
He alleged that organisations such as ZEC, Citizens Forum, Oasis Forum, Transparency International, Southern African Centre for Constructive Resolution of Disputes (SACCORD), Anti-Voter Apathy Project (AVAP) and Change Life Zambia are being controlled by Bishop Mpundu.
He alleged that ZEC has applied for funds from Rome purporting that it will be used for civic education when in fact it will be utilised to finance the PF campaigns.
Mr Chimumbwa said it is surprising that immediately the funds were approved, Caritas Zambia issued a statement that they will participate in next year’s general elections through monitoring.
He also challenged TIZ president Reuben Lifuka to state where the funding for the organisation is derived from.
“Mr Lifuka should tell the nation where the…
# 7 Whats your problem. The matter being discussed is very diferent from what you are talking about. It looks like all shushus in diplomatic missions have been instructed to write something on the blog everyday. Please make sure we are on the same page.
He said it is public knowledge that the late President resigned as Republican Vice-President in 1993 because of Mr Sata’s alleged corrupt activities.
To all Zambians in the UK, especially those in London: there will be a meeting at the Zambia High Commission, London, on Friday, 12th March 2010, from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm, on how to access funds from the Zambia Citizens Empowerment Commission. Officials from the Commission will address the meeting.
#12 You right though I found it necessary to share this with others just incase you missed it. Good day
Yawn, Yawn, Yawn to all of you including Thandie
Motsepe, i agree.
Iwe 2011, what’s so necesary about knowing what one Mumbi is saying? We are discussing Thandiwe here, why should you always paste naked propaganda on every podium? We apppreciate you and the MMD machinery ( and even the Pact) are on the ground, but you gotta give us some space sometimes. Sometimes we want to behave like intelligent Zambians. You really savour pettiness, don’t you? You have now successfully spoilt the mood here, it’s back to usual stone-age politicking of affronts and finger-pointing. Very soon, Senior Citizen will even pop up here!
Cadreism has always been a threat to constructive debate, it always kills debate.
No malice intended here…
The story is Thandiwe but you have lunatics blogging trash!! Yashani kanshi? anyway, nice speech by the one who wrote it for thandiwe. Kwenze bwanji ku China?
whats wrong with her mouth??????????????
so if she knows all the challenges facing the women why not advice her husband to stop galavanting the world and instead divert all the tax payers money he is using to projects that can overcome these chalenges. thandiwe kambako na mu dala wako. we appreciate the observation tho it is just written for you by your workers
#17 and # 18 The idea is not to spoil the mood but to share info. Sorry that I seem to have disturbed the flow of the debate here. So sorry that was not the intetion:d/:d/:)>-:)>-:)>-
#14 Multi Millionaire, For you to make this announcement I assume you are an employee at the Zambia high commission. If so please do us a favour by establishing effective ways of communicating with Zambians in the UK other than using this LT media which is used by very very few Zambians resident in this country. Our high commission here has never bothered do something to facilitate communication. Look at their website, it’s a shambles, never updated and serves no purpose at all. The telephone system is another mess, you will be very lucky to speak to someone there. Emails not answered. To make an inquiry you have to travel to that office. Why not consult other embassies to show you how to improve contacts with nationals? Does our embassy even know how many Zambians are in the UK? I…
# 22 – Nom de Plume Dot Com:
No, I am not at the ZHC, London. I’m just an ordinary multi-millionaire in London, enjoying the comforts and luxuries that London gives me. I happened to receive that information from a collegue who works for one of the UN agencies in London and thought of sharing it with other Zambia Londoners. I have great love for your country having made my fortune there …
Thandiwe, need to stop talking down to Zambian women, most Zambian woman achieve a better life by working hard and not by marrying a thief that is some 50 years their senior. just remember that your so called status is by chance and will end soon…. you and the crook you call your husband will be sent back to the farm where you belong soon.
# 5, What high Achievements has Thandiwe on her record, because you are asking Thandiwe to INSPIRE other women to achieve high!
Mwe ba ku bulaya mulinchusi sana ayini? Mulelwisha utumahafu ku high commission. Some of you guys are stuck in that confort zone of yours. Illegal immigrants.
Come back KK. All is forgiven. We misunderstood you. We need you as our President.. All the bakadoli in politics haven’t got a clue as to what to do for the common Zambian. Come back Please!!!!!
