Police deny the Consortium of Civil Societies permit to hold a rally

Share

Citizens Forum executive director Simon Kabanda

The Consortium of civil society organizations has put off their planned good governance rally which was scheduled to be held in Mandevu this Saturday 27th March 2010.

This follows the refusal by the Zambia Police to grant them a permit for the rally. In a statement released to QFM today, Citizens Forum Executive Secretary Simon Kabanda says despite having notified the Police, they have refused to allow them to hold the rally.

He says as law abiding citizens they will not be tempted by the Police’s refusal to grant them a permit to break the law by going ahead with the rally.

Mr Kabanda however said that they will do everything legally possible to ensure that their constitutional right to assemble is not blocked in perpetuity. He says the civil society reiterates their commitment to demanding for good governance and a good constitution in Zambia.

He added that consortium of civil society is further committed to ensure that Zambia does not promote bad laws and corruption in all its forms.

He further stated that the Red Card Campaign is still going ahead and will move to another province from the Copperbelt, and ensure that people sensitized to participate effectively in the Red Card Campaign.

  1. I for one will not be supporting anybody who wears such a silly hat. Fr Bwalya talks about corruption. Corruption is about accountability. So how can he then support a party that does not practice internal democracy? Is that not corruption of another kind as is abusing minors and then moving the abusing adult into another parish to continue corrupting the morals of a minor?

  2. Good Evening

The powers that be are really doing their best to tighten the grip on civil society organisations with their restrictive laws and regulations. This is what every Zambian should be concerned about… not trivial issues like who wears what kind of head covering.

  3. Red Carders, this is phase one in trying to shut down the campaign.

Watch as this forum and others like it get flooded with Shushushu’s to counteract the way the movement is growing in the Internet.

My personal opinionion is that the Red Card campaign is good because it will force MMD to take notice of the fact that people aren’t happy. But I don’t have confidence in the opposition.

  4. #4 How do you know that the people are not happy? Have you conducted an opinion poll as to what Zambian people really think about the govt and the opposition? If you do not have the figures at hand then just say you yourself are not happy with the current govt and not hide behind the people. Nine Chale I beg to differ with you, if people are espousing violence to get rid of a legitimate govt with vague noises about fighting corruption when those that they support are morally corrupt themselves, then the govt needs to do something. Lets not get into a frenzy here about freedom, if there was no freedom in Zambia then Sata and the Post would not be allowed to spew the venom that they do on a daily basis.

  5. Shalawambe, go and read comments all over this blog, witness the riots in the Copperbelt, look at what happened in Kasama andSolwezi by-elections. Don’t live in denial shushushu!

I said people aren’t happy, I didn’t specify whether it is the majority or not(although I’m willing to bet that it is) I simply said people aren’t happy. Poll this site and you will see. If your MMD allowed the CSO rally then the evidence would be there to see. Why are you scared if you believe people are happy with MMD?

What division of govt do you work for? Smoothcriminal can you use your IT skills to unmask this Shushushu?

  6. green card campaign is on the cards contact me…. enviromental friendly campaign for clean and green zambia, not these chamba stoned thugs sent by a chamba addicted sata..
You donot forcibly remove a sitting government from power .. you simply vote them out:-? its thats simple, you donot jump up and down making noise with red papers in your hands..you are disturbing peace!..

you must also remember all and even more which dislike about MMD is in sata’s DNA; lies, corruption, voting rigging, womanising, kidnapings, bitting people and jailing them for no reason… all of that and more evil defines sata
Its strange and shocking that even people who are kubulaya on this blog cannot see through sata’s chamba clouded lies:o
Sata and RB are the same .. both UNIP home schoollled.:o

  7. Fr bwalya on bail /mother bwalya in jail and roman catholic church are corrupt and immoral.. and shouldnt be trusted.. look at what happened in Rwanda,,and sexing of small boys all over the world…the list of evil is endless:o

  8. I feel it’s time RB invited the opposition parties and other stakeholders to a round table (no head, no tail) meeting(s) to discuss Big Issues like good governance, Health, Education, unemployment, Agriculture and above all his exit next year.

  9. Hope by now RB chosen his plot for construction of his retirement house. RB, the monkeys you evicted are just counting days on which to relocated to SH when you leave office next year. Being cruel to animals in some developed countries could carry a jail sentence up to 5 years and a fine.

  10. Shalawambe
Did this Civil society organization say they are supporting PF in any way,i dont think so,your reasoning about holding PF to ransom for not being democratic is baseless,PF can be corrupt and undemocartic because they dont use tax payers money, the people who give them that money they corrupt should take them to task,i wont have to tell you how corrupt RB’s govt, you know it deep down your heart. At the moment you dont even need an opinion poll to see how unhappy people are, take a trip back home and see for yourself, start with the flood victims at the stadium
Trueth hurts, without the POST’s venomous reporting, we wouldnt have known that Thandi was still getting her salary, chiluba is a thief.kunda could have spent 5billion to pay NCC members, the list is endless. The end is nigh

  11. Well done!!! This Fr Bwalya is a disgrace to the clergy. There is no way law enforcers can allow anarchy to prevail in the country just cos this so called Consortium of NGOs feels the democratically elected Govt is not performing to their miraculous expectations and yet its for their selfish agenda.

  12. MMD should be very careful with their attacks on the Catholic. Its grassroots network goes beyond where government potential diminishes. The church can influence the 2011 vote. Don’t say i did not warn you. To be forewarned is to be forearmed.

  13. #15 MMD is not attacking Catholics. It is the Catholics that are attacking MMD. It is their illusion of thinking that they have a divine right to intervene in governance that has resulted in them inciting carnage in other countries. Remember Zambia is not a Catholic Nation it is a Christian Nation. There other Christian denominations who during all this have remained quiet. They do not lack the tools of analysis.

  14. A caller to the Radio Phoenix talk programme Let the People Talk of 2 March, 2010, featuring Fr. Frank Bwalya and Simon Kabanda, both Catholics, wondered why it was the Catholics this or that and asked where all their red cards were taking them to?(TIMES OF ZAMBIA)

  15. I commend the Zambia Police for their top notch effort to ensure that peace prevails in the nation. We cannot allow an anarchist movement like the Red Card campaign to continue in Zambia more especially if some PF cadres are taking part as I have evidence that some of them support genocide.
“I pray that Zambia goes the Rwanda way and your family be the first to be hacked.”Kalos2020, Civil society organizations alarmed and concerned at the arrest of Fr. Bwalya, Lusaka Times, March/14/2010

The cops must make sure peace is respected in this nation. I also commend the CSO’s for not willing to break the law but they must understand that there is only one way of removing a legitimate govt and that is through the ballot.

  16. The CSO’s must also explain why they intend to protest against a govt that brought 6.3% GDP growth whilst the rest of the world was in recession. It does not make sense to a person like me. Clearly the reason they are unhappy with govt cannot be economical. It must be for some other reason and it would be interesting to know what it is.

  17. No one is advocating unlawfull removal of lupiya from govt..the pipo are advocating and campaigning for his removal come 2011 via the ballot.. We did it to Kaunda and we stopped chiluba third term. We are doing it for our country..lupiya is a liability and was meant only to fulfil LPM’s term..We shall have no RB in office come dec 2011..we shall do it by ballot..amen

  18. #s 16 and 17 Advisor and Yaya- The Catholic Church helped the Zambians to get rid of the dreaded one party state. The MMD then did not complain , but to day it is so anti Catholic to the extent of putting the Rwanda genocide blame on this Church. Who ever you are let me advise you that the reasons Zambians rose against Unip/KK are still there and even worse. Yes for you who are direct beneficiaries of this corrupt system, the Catholic Chuech is a nuisence. But remember the future of this country depends on honest accountability because when trouble starts there wont be a chance to say who is who.

  19. # 21 I totally agree with you. In my opinion, the Catholic church is the only independent organisation in Zambia which is concerned about the welfare of the Zambians. They are just trying to say what other people are scared to talk about. They helped us with KK and they are now. They are not like other churches who depend on handouts hence scared of the government. # 4 Shalawambe. When were you last in Zambia to ask such a question? I bet you are VERY rich that non of your family members is facing any hardship at home if you are Zambian.

  20. the guy might be wearing a stupid hat but that is not the issue – the point his that he has THE RIGHT to wear a stupid hat even if it looks stupid. tiye ka red card. #22 sosa bane

  21. It all atarted when the third therm bid failed and Chiluba opted for Mwanawasa as a presidential candidate for MMD. The snake did what it does best, it recoiled and retreated but into the whole, but it had a second plan, Form its own party and called it the Patriotic Front for simple reasons, He could not stay in MMD under Mwanawasa because he was not going to be tolerated with his silly and cruel manipulative and corrupt ways which reasons Mwanawasa resigned as Vice president of Zambia. It should be understood that all who have supervised Sata have all said he is not presidential material. Like in the bible the snake duped the young girl and made her to sin and she lived in misery all her life pain and death came upon her. The similarities in this case are that it promised them to own

  22. #24
Walasa!!.That how it all began.I remember very well how cruel this Sata can be and I will NEVER put a vote on him.He can have the audience of call-boys but we all know who votes.

  23. I have no respect whatsoever for this charlatan Bwalya. He never uses the Bible to put across his views and yet claims to be a Priest of God. No where in the Bible is it written that people will repent if you flash red cards at them. I wonder what these Priests are taught in their schools. To them change is wrought by might and yet the. Bible says ..not by might, not by power but by My Spirit says the Lord. It is therefore very clear to me as a Christian that Frank Bwalya is under the control of a contrary spirit. It is very unwise to heed the advice of a person like him!

  24. Shalawambe it’s a shame you are spoiling the name of a good band like this, what are you talking about? Zambian people are happy about what? Your thief dwarf president? Or humpty dumpty flying around the world at $2 million a week? Wake up pliz mwe

  25. #24 continued- When Sata started the PF he was alone and being a good organiser he managed to convice a few key personalities and used the catholic church as his launch pad. He used insults against his political opponents as a way to show that he is a couragious person, soon the whole political seen in Zambia would be engulfed in politics of insults and it become a way of life. What is so surprising is that the society where Sata appeals so much is the iliterate who dont even work and he gave them promises such as less tax more money in your pocket, erassing compounds and building new structures. To this society, this will negatively affect them, reducing tax means spreading the tax base for more income, erassing compounds thats where they stay, Yet they blindly follow the snake.

  26. NEVER have the cso’s said they would resort to violence.
NEVER have the Red Card campaigners said they want to break laws(See today’s story on protest denial by police)
IT IS MMD who have said this will be a violent protest
IT IS MMD who has said the Red Card campaign is violent.

Everyone keep up on this matter.
It’s your FREEDOMS being played with….Your freedom to voice your concerns.
Your freedom to express your view to a malignant government who will not listen to the general public and wants to crush any opposition with new laws to eliminate anybody who is a threat.

RUPIAH can go to hell…The FAT PIG!

  27. I’m thinking of sending 1000 RED T-Shirts to Fr Bwalya with the words.

“MMD will not get my Vote”

A nice PEACEFUL way for Zambians to express themselves.

  28. MMD do what you can but no vote shall be grabed from any voter to warant your continue stay in power.come 2011 you are gone bane.Greet ba UNIP for us.they were once like you but soon you shall be like them RIP.

  29. Freedom of assembly
Freedom of expression at stake. But the MMD cadres who will be demonstrating against the Pope will do it without a permit. White ribbon campaign will do it without a permit. Come 2011, Go PACT Go PACT Go

  30. #21 Deja Vu,which church stands for accountability and honest am sure you did not mean the catholic church.Maybe if you talked about the Jehovah Witnesses ,read today’s LT the church is riddled with scandles especially sexual ones. How many katolikas voted for MMD in 1991 ?Am sure they voted for late Chama Chakomboka.Preach Jesus Christ not about poverty ,thats God’s duty he knows why Zedians are poor and English rich Sata will not bring riches to Zambia but war and open corruption.

  31. #17 I also listened to the program and there were more callers in support of the red card than that singular caller. RED CARD aluta continua.

  32. I think some zambians want to experience war, some of our neighbours have and probably these pipo want to ‘feel’ how it feels to be in refugee camps! Fr Walya will be in refugee camp in Angola

  33. #36 YAYA : As long as we are human we will always fall at some time. I remember when I was in Secondary School how a Mr Mafute spoiled a marriage of his fellow JWs.during their visitations, but that does not mean the JW is bad society, no. The moselims are associated with suicide bombings , but there is no where in the Holy Qaran where such acts are allowed. So it is the human which gives a bad to face to any organization. If you read the MMDs original Consititution/Manifesto and compare it with the rubbish we are seeing now you will honestly weep. It says one must be member of MMD for at least 2years to stand for any position, but now because the charecters in MMD want to dsstroy the opposition, u can join now and get a position in the afternoon. MMD is ok but its members are bad.

  34. 6 Anything that you do not agree with is shushushu. When are you going to grow up and accept that people have different views from yours? This blog is populated by a minority and not the majority of right thinking people who are busy ,aking a living for themselves. But even then, compare the number of bloggers who make reasonable comments to those like yours and you will realise that the latter is growing in influence. They are not shushushus but people who have realised that the opposition in Zambia does not offer anything better but anarchy. I mean how can any reasonable person think that Sata and his dying PF can do anything sensible if they were in government?

  35. Katie Good, I welcome divergent views, that is why I am arguing that the Red Card Campaign should go ahead. It is MMD that are not accepting of different views.

If you think that the majority are happy then why not allow the rally by the CSO’s to go ahead? I called Shalawambe shushushu because like you, he claims that the people of Zambia are happy! I responded by saying, that the police should let the rally go ahead and we will see. Why support a negative freedom of expression?

Finally, please read posts properly for you might look silly if you don’t. Look at my post #4, where I CLEARLY state that I don’t have any faith in the opposition, but the Red Card Campaign could be a good wake up call for MMD. /:)

  36. we are peaceful as a nation & let us not be intimidated by a finished party that is always try to preach violence whenever the opposition oppess them.Viva pact, viva red card campaign

  37. 41 Whisper, all sorts of campaigns have been tried and flopped. Whistling, hooting (ask mumbi phiri how much support she recieved). Time wasting, none of the organisers is ever arrested but poor souls who cannot even tell a red card from a white one are locked up. The elections are less than two years from now. In a democracy this is a very short time to wait which is why we go to the polls every five years. Why do these people want the backdoor into power and do they even have better alternatives? If it’s Sata well again let’s put him to the test in 2011.

  38. people in the North Zambia also want Red cards. whom should they contact. Here it is no nonsense and people mean it MMD zwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
