FORMER First Lady Maureen Mwanawasa has been asked to engage Government if she has any complaints instead of protesting through foreign media.
Independent Churches of Zambia president Reverend David Masupa said internal concerns are better resolved locally.
“She should have engaged President Banda or the Secretary to the Cabinet instead of airing her grievances through foreign media, because that created an impression that she was protesting,” he said.
Rev Masupa said this in an interview in Lusaka yesterday.
And Rev Masupa has urged Government to set up a commission of inquiry into President Mwanawasa’s death to put his widow’s heart at rest.
This comes in the wake of Mrs Mwanawasa’s statement on BBC radio that she was displeased that Government has not investigated Dr Mwanawasa’s death.
President Mwanawasa collapsed in Egypt where he was attending an African Union summit in 2008 and died later in hospital.

Ba Maureen is just trying to get attention in short she is very bored. Everyone knows that her husband was sick and she contributed as she is too greed to be in power and control the country. Just like what she said on BBC radio that she is educated so why not concentrate on working instead of making a fool out of herself. I thought pipo with degrees have better judgement on issues than those with grade 7 certificate.
Thanks to the Rev. Misupa for the timely advice. Complaining to the foreign media can’t solve the local problem. If she want to be a leader of that country some day, she must learn the best way to address this problem. BBC has her own problems but thinking that we can best be heard through foreign media is a waste of time, The big problem we have in Zambia is not luck of educated men and women in our goverment but the application of that education in the running of our countryour. Doctors, nurses and the wife knew that mwanawasa was not fit to carry out the national duties, but today we want the government to investigate what caused his death. These are double standards. What kind of answers do we need? The man was misused by those who wanted to live good lives at the expense of his life.
I remember Mirriam telling Maureen that if her daddy dies, she will squarely put the blame on her.She did not bother since she used to consider herself as a Co-president of our Zambia. Now she is shedding crocodile tears on BBC when we all know she was busy shopping in Paris while our beloved LPM was grasping for his last breath.Woman, have some decency!! Also tell us the effect your flirtations with Darlington Mwape had on Levy for him to even vacate Plot One for Stata Lodge.
The investigation she has called for should also include who and why the remains were flown all over the country at a cost of K20 billion. Whose idea was this and what was the motive? That K20 billion could have gone a long way in educating some poor kids in our country. This woman is really selfish. The Nigerian President died in the morning and by late afternoon he was laid to rest and there was no pomp and song about it apart from a seven days period of mourning yet with us here, we had more than a month of boring Radio music yet this woman says the government was in a hurry to get on with power after her husband’s death did she want us to keep the body in State House until after his term of office in 2011 while she ruled?
Tell Maureen who is now insulting Zambian poor lot that her callous misconduct deserves nothing but the inglorious garb of villainy. We will freely plug holes in her ingratitude and myth for power.Sundry allegations have been bandied as to how she was the actual Lord of the Manor exploiting sick husband who allegedly lacked firmness and a voice against her impunity.
We have been regaled with tales of how she influenced and compromised due process in the award of contracts, how she manipulated the appointment of key officers in establishment to her own selfish dreams.Give that money to the needy old folks on the ground.
Please tell Maureen that many of us Zambians appreciate sober first ladies as was mama Betty Kaunda and is Mama Thandiwe Banda. Unlike her of Maureen of whom we have been regaled with tales of how she wrecked some’s heart from her marriage as a Gold digger, then influenced and compromised due process in the award of contracts, how she manipulated the appointment of key officers in government, and how she replicated the family tree anachronism of mukwabo kuyiboneshata in the Presidency, she did more harm to professional citizens..
What can an outsider in her tenure like me who has no defending information foothold in her Presidency say other than to suggest that these allegations are not ordinaries that constitute onion peels of speculations, which yield to more layers, and yet more.unapologetically she is ungrateful and useless to take serious.
Ask Maureen if there is any evidence that this gold digger remained true to her marital oath to be with her husband in good times and in bad times. Did she discharge her duty with aplomb, striving to maintain the dignity of her bedridden husband that LPM was in reality? Her materialism and wishful characteristics to her self certainly did not sit well with so many Zambians who would have her abandon her obsession in the evidence of wrong stretches.
Hold your fire! If Maureen cant access Bwezi, what option does she have? Its not like she rushed to BBC to complain, she was invited for an interview,Honestly $1000 per month for a former first lady is embarassing.Hate her or Love her,she has genuine concerns, lets not spread hate mail people:-??:-??:-??:-??:-??
Just a week ago, I went to great lengths to show cause as to why the late Dr Gavin Silwamba’s death should be investigated. Could it be that Mrs Mwanawasa was awakened as well? She is a Lawyer and she understands that the cause of every death must be reduced to the most probable. A person with diabetes found dead does not mean they were not murdered, a person with a history of a stroke does not necessarily have to die by a second stroke again, although that is most likely, but it must not be assumed until proved. Perhaps, it is time that Zambia strengthened the law that relates to death. There is a legal duty on the part of the Registrar of death to inform the coroner of deaths that occur without a doctor attending or during an operation or while still under anaesthetic.
Not when the local media have gone to dogs
The function of the coroner’s inquest is to establish the cause of death, and not to apportion blame. There were several homicides in Chipata in the recent past, but we have not heard of any inquests into those deaths. If we cannot learn even from the dead, is there any wonder why we remain backward and ignorant?

Maureen went to Kenya in the company of the President, remember? She has been with the President on several occasions and with his wife too, so she may have talked to him about it. People who do not have the facts including the rev masupa should not assume that this was the first time that she is talking about this. Furthermore, it is taboo in Zambia for a widow to talk about her husband’s death in the year of mourning, this is usually left to the relatives, but perhaps LPM’s relatives are not clued up as she is. She was with him by his bed side and when he died she could have demanded a post mortem but she is silenced by culture.
Maureen wanted to get international sympathy, so that a fund can be set up for the struggling widow of the late president of Zambia. That is the reason why she said all that on BBC. The whole aim is to get international groups to fund her children’s education, trust me it has nothing to do with the late president, its just greedy Maureen at work wait and see, you will hear more.
Zambians, please remember in our culture no body just dies. There is always some poor whitch or wizard to take the blame. So maureene is just being Zambian.
Talk of an elite way of property grabbing by Maureen from the citizens of Zambia.
Maureen drove her husband into politics to earn a lavish life and not to serve the electorate. Now that he is no more she wants to benefit from his death.
May be her cry will champion the investigations of many deaths; The Gabon disaster, Paul Tembo, DPP Mukelebai Mukelebai. Maureen is not alone in this race. She can see late Efford Chabala’s wife who has not received a decent penny and is struggling to send her children to local schools.
but levy had enough money and properties, where are they, Maureen? Dont tell me you finished everything. The farms and so on. And why not take yr children back to Zambia for their education. Ati mukango ukasoba nyama, umadya uzu. Remember Levy left a Will for you and one for us as Zambians although their was no money in our Will but I think there was enough for you and the 6 children. Maureen stand up and go to work and stop making noise as though you are the only widow.
Even if an investigation is done, so what? Levy is dead and he will not come back. Its not easy for us too. I loved very much and I really miss his intelligence compared to what is going on now in that country.
Maureen I will tell you one thing, in my own view from that time yr husband had the accident when he was the vice president to this day, I believe some pple wanted him dead, so that they can ran away with the own interests and crimes they have committed to Zambians and becoz Levy tried very hard to stop them, my dear, they could not take it and they just wanted him dead. So sorry Maureen even if an investigation is done, they will not give you a clear answer. Lets face it.
Iwe Maureen iwe! He was our president too. If we needed some investigation into his death, it should be us to decide since it’s our tax money that will finance . If you strongly feel you need to proceed, well you can use your own money and hire private investigators to do it for you. Moreover, we were not there when you were marrying him. That’s your private life. You claim you are educated and yet you want a poor Zambian who lives on less than a dollar per day to pay for your children’s education? $1000 dollars/month is more than enough! Humble yourself lady 😮
Mwa mona nomba ba Maureen mwailetelela tondolo musuma….ati mwikala patalala mwine apatalalika!
Maureen might be known to be a greedy woman but on this one she might have a point. Logic tells me that she’s probably already made several contacts with the government over this issue and no one has listened. Otherwise, i do not think a reasonable learned person would first of all decide to go to the media before going through the established formal channells
Maureen you are a crafty and greedy woman. You want the international community to set up a trust fund for you and your children so that you can use the money for your political ambitions. You want pipo to dance to your tune, you had your time of fame you fraud. As for the presidency, forget, there are pipo out there who will chew you up. Pipo who know so much about the things you have done. (in the dark)
# 14 whatever that means direct it to your lame qualification.I dont see a well educated person getting less than $1000 per month.Consider investing in your Education then your petty jealousy will varnish. As i said,Hate her or Love her,she has a point:)]:)]:)]:)]:)]:)]
Free advise my dear, adjust your life style, there is nothing special about you. All Zambians struggling and you are far much better than all of us. Besides we all know you have money saved somewhere, stop fooling us mama, do you know how much i earn and struggle to make ends meet? You have really made me angry. May God open your eyes to see what you have and thank him for that. You still have a health life and lovely kids to be greatful for. Watelela????
Sharp Shooter!! you are really sharp. who the herk does she think she is, if not making a fool out of herself? who doesent know she contibuted to levy’s going to his early grave just like what this ka other ailing Ireen kunda is doing? Maureen killed levy. period!!!!!
Maureen you can start by being a ward secretary and climb the ladder of politics before you aspire of presidency. After all that is what your husband used to say. If you cannot manage on your entitlement of USD1,000 per month the GRZ is paying you for doing nothing, consider bringing your children back to Zambia for their education. Your days of lavish spending of tax payers money are over. Live within what you are paid and explain to your children that times have changed. Am sure they are now old enough to understand. Since you are very educated try earning your living by doing some real work. You can even get a job outside the country that can give you the life style you are still craving for. Bloggers what does our constitution say about an unmarried person being president of our country
#26 Wanzelu.
Do you live in Zambia? What is your defination of well educated? How much do you think the average degree/diploma holder gets in this country? Or is it that a diploma or degree is lamely educated? If you live home and send your children to public institutions for education, how much do you think the teachers with degrees get! am amazed.
chisuma chi madamu ichi kuti twachi operata :)>-
I mwe bantu i chikalipa cufya umwine let maureen excerse her rights more over maureen is not just un ordnary person but someone who was marriead to the sitting presedent who died while on duty and there is smoke without fire
I mwe mwe bantu i chikalipa cufya umwine let maureen excerse her rights more over maureen is not just un ordnary person but someone who was marriead to the sitting presedent who died while on duty and there is no smoke without fire if you see some smoke be asured that there is some fire somewhere
The attention of this government has gone to pipo like chiluba, lifwekelo, chimumbwa, tekere, and mumbi. its a shame for the mmd to be spending money on thugs and forget pipo who have served this nation with dignity Like levy and the national team which perished in Gabon.
i get that for 5 months then she is complaining rubbish let her keep quiet we are tired wanzelu please be reasonable don’t just blab things like you know it all
Time has simply caught up with her.
Time has simply caught up with her. In any case has she not shared in Levy’s estate?
$1000 is way too much for any educated and working person, let alone countrys former first lady. those who get less than that then lwenu, do u have to blame us for ur misfortune? get beter education and you will enjoy the Privilege of getting good money.
What is the life expectancy of a Cabbage? I thought someone even over live his. Let us face it, the man survived an RTA and was never the same after that. People should be thanking God instead
Ba Maureen, you are just a citizen of Zambia like every other Zambian apart from the fact that you were lucky to have been Zambia’s First lady at one time. That does not mean that you should be behaving and spending like you own Zambia.Millions of people in Zambia can not even afford a decent meal on a daily basis. If I were you ,I would be grateful.for the $1000 .Which unemployed person in Zambia works up in the morning to that kind of money?
The level of debate, comments from fellow bloggers is utterly personal and childish. Why not comment within the context of the article.Apart from being first lady,Maureen was wife to Levy and mother to her kids.Separation of her being a wife and first lady would help the haters on this blog to be more objective. It was Levy who was maureen’s hubby and he never divorced her, just that mere fact shows for better, for worse between the two married people.Who are you to start accusing someone’s wife of infidelity.Zedians let’s learn to mind our own business. If say maureen cheated on her late hubby, what has that got to do with me or my life for that matter-i don’t need that gossip,it’s all buullcraap!!
Apart from being the wife of the president, the first lady’s role is not constitutional, and I don’t see how Maureen can make claims on the government. We never elected her to any office, so we don’t owe her anything. She should be grateful that she is paid $1000 per month for doing absolutely nothing!!!
Wow!! #38 those of us who get less than $1000 lwesu… and we do not go out complaining to anyone about it we simply find ways of how to manage the little we earn. Please tell her to do the same. Esp that thats what is enshrined in the constitution of the Republic of Zambia. You the educated ones should understand and respect the law.
Maureen aliye malango!!

#38 lesedi A degree holder in GRZ gets 3million Kwacha. What is that in $ terms?
this story is an eye opener to mrs ruphiya banda because for her she must even stop running up and down like a chicken, get on books. she needs to get a bachelors before she leaves that state house otherwise it will be catastrophe for her because she is a primary school teacher. she has no profession to run back to. mrs mwanawasa’s case is debatable, why can’t we just give here the money for her husbands benefits so that she can shut up and get back to her normal profession. am sure she will get very good business, a lot of clients will be happy to have her represent them. mama Maureen, get in touch with me please. i feel bad for you. some of these loggers have nothing to show the world. may God provide for you and may those who used your hubby body for campaign not make it in 2011.
Maybe Maureen has cried out loud enough to the local media but to not avail hence opting for foreign media. Levy’s illness to death was handled by expertriate medical personnel and i guess they indicated the cause of death on the death Certifcate. He died from a secure military Hospital and chances foul play on the medical report are slim. All i can say is that she needs counselling
We were all meant to believe that the late Dr Levy Mwanawasa’s death was due to a stroke, now his wife says his death should be investigated; there is something she know that we also need to know so tell us. 😮
Let the lady mourn her husband. However, when u see what is happening ….. In privacy people have said it that a pres with LPM condition should have not have travelled as he was under constant check before travel he was not a common man to go the way he did. Viza ululika!!!!! Kusamwa kwachilamo. Kukambako tyala!!
Could it be that Levy was killed dy plunderers? Why is Maureen insisting that Government ought to investigate the last 30 minutes of Levy’s death?
#5,6,7,8 Patriot…Please spare us your silly analysis that Thandie Banda is of sober character. She is equally a Gold digger coz she would’nt have looked at RB in Chipata if he was just some peasant farmer. She knows that when RB dies ..soon,some of the property will be hers.Thandi Banda is a gold digger please put that in your head
MAUREEN KAYA CHABE MWEE, ASK THE MAJORITY ZAMBIAN WHAT THEY ARE GETTING, YOU WILL BE MORE THAN SHOCKED, I KNOW YOU KNOW, BUT ITS JUST YOUR KA GREEDNESS. JUST ADJUST MY DEAR
The interview is up on yoututbe just search for maureen mwanawasa
while checking what the cause of death was, (maureen or someone, anyone) pliz tell us when that actually took place… ! just becos there is a rumour does not make it official that is when it happened… but the question lingers on and on and on and on!
There seem to be some low thinking from Masupa and some bloggers.
Maureen Mwanawasa was asked how she was coping up with life. What did you expect her to say? Lie that all was well? The truth is a number of men especially in MMD get so intimidated when Maureen speaks out becoz the lady is smarter than them.
Good luck Maureen.
$1000 is reasonable if you look at what GRZ workers get. Masupa, please tell her to be realistic, she already has a house bought by govenment and she not being paid for doping anything.
Iwe Maureen the majority of the people who are paying the tax you are enyoying are living on less than $1 per day, dont you have any sympathy?
#55 You are obviously outside Zambia and most likely in the USA, if the emblem is anything to go by and surprisingly you are making the same mistake we made when we were in grade school some 30 years ago, “coping up” or in other usage, “cope up.” That mistake fell in the category we used to refer to as “common mistakes in English.” The most common one was “discuss about…” A little book, big book at the time, entitled “Student Companion” listed such mistakes including the one you made.
The correct way is “cope with” and “discuss (followed by the subject/object).”
They say “munshebwa aile na mashinsha kubuko.”
UBUTUTU MULEKE!
The corr
The former first lady should know that the calculations are based on the bread basket for Zambia and not USA or UK. The government is simply following the constitution provisions that apply to her situation. If she sends children abroad that her bill to foot.It is unfair that she whines that she is not paid enough and struggling to take care of her children! Let them go to UNZA / some college in Zambia. She made a conscience decision to live abroad and educate her kids abroad, therefore should just work hard and earn the living like anybody else overseas. A $1000 is equivalent to K 5 mill (@ 50000 exchange rate) and that is the pay for a well educated Zambian who is paying 30% tax. Therefore, it is insulting for the lady to sound an unappreciative to had working and real struggling Zambians
Thandiwe is equally a gold digger for how does she explain getting married to a man who is older than her father and has children older than her. She’s a gold digger……kuti abakulu balemufulila, ni defilement.
She needs a man! Its been a long time.
No.50. Please dont steal my name! Why can’t you be Bokassa or Idi Amin?
Let her just get a chi sugar daddy to take care of her instead of disturbing everyone. She must let her husbands soul rest in peace.Greed has given her exactly what she wanted.[-(
Its sad enough that this woman refused to mourn her Husband like a normal Widow should , she has the guts to insult us by begging the international media for sympathy!! awe this woman needs alangizi for real!!! kwaliba shuwa. are we fools that we have kept quiet after all she has done, wasnt she the one who sneaked into zed while Levy was helpless in hospital bring things Ku laundry or does she think theres anything hiden under the sun? Pity! she refused the house prepared for her to stay in while the government prepared a place she could move into, vacated the entire hotel for her and her spoilt brats to stay in while a well deserving zambian starved! awe may God deal with her as she has dealt with Us.
Thank you, I’ve just been looking for info about this subject for a long time and yours is the greatest I’ve came upon so far. However, what concerning the bottom line? Are you certain in regards to the supply?|What i don’t understood is if truth be told how you are not really a lot more smartly-liked than you may be now. You are so intelligent.
