Zambia’s first republican president, Dr.Kenneth Kaunda has challenged African leaders to take responsibility and fight poverty, offshoots of hunger, disease and exploitation that is taking place on the continent despite being free of colonialism.
Speaking at a press briefing in Lusaka yesterday in respect of the climax of the commemoration of the centenary year of the birth of Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Dr. Kaunda observed that Africa is still faced with the challenge of deadly diseases and poverty.
He said there is need for the continent to work together towards curbing these challenges.
And Dr. Kaunda has called on leaders on the African continent to emulate and uphold the legacy of one of Africa’s greatest leaders and Ghana’s founding president, Kwame Nkrumah who stood up and fought against injustice, corruption, illiteracy and disease.
Dr. Kaunda, who is expected to travel to Ghana for the centenary celebration of Nkhrumah’s birthday and Africa freedom day celebrations, says it is important that leaders continue fighting the challenges the continent is faced with in order to attain what Dr Nkrumah fought for.
Dr Kaunda is also expected to address an international colloquial in Ghana from the 23rd to the 25th of May to discuss the life of Dr Nkrumah on the invitation of the Ghanaian Government.

how can we eradicate poverty when you as our leaders just concentrate on amassing wealth for yourselves. What did he do when he was president apart making the country bankrupt? We are fed up of you. You only criticise when you are affected personaly.
One of KK’s famous Quotes ‘Take responsibility and fight poverty, offshoots of hunger, disease and exploitation on man by man.’ This takes me back to the days when KK ruled with an iron hand. Travel well.

Kaunda just shut up old man! You’re the wrong person to talk about this. You had 27 years to do these things but you left Zambia in a worst financial position than you found it. You failed to feed a nation of 12 million. Shame on you!
Kaunda had his short comings but he never stole from government he ruled well, he helped to have other countries attain independence, he hosted these countries in Zambia. Which also meant they needed a kind of funding from him, then those whose country these people came from attacked Zambia e.g South Africa, Zimbabwe destroyed some of the things already built e.g bridges& Kaunda had to rebuild, that costed money. The other thing is the problem with many Zambians just after independence people went to vandalise post offices and other institutions that were run by the colonialist, forgetting that the property belonged to them thereafter people started blaming the KK. And some of you guys condeming KK have the same attitude. To develop a country its a collective effort, you do something
It is true that KK had caused ques shortage of certain things, but he protected Zambian investment, people had jobs, the exchange rate was far better than it is now it was like 1USD = 100 ZMK. How much is it now. The copper prices fell in the early 1970’s, then he made a mistake to get 51% of shares in foreign companies. Though his intention was to protect Zambian investment and have Zambians run their country. Chiluba according to London Judgment he stole money, so his the one to blame, corruption went on the increase. During kaunda’s time people were scared to corrupt because everyone assumed that there shushu’s everywhere and don’t know who it is.What has happened now. Don’t say Kaunda was worse or what, quote from HH “the people who were in government at that time were the right…
when KK was in power at least we got a decent education, can you say that is happening now , for the average zambian. i am not talking about elite schools in lusaka or copperbelt, i’m talking about average village children.[-([-([-(
KK, go back to the Land- WA bamo mudala-
Yes fight poverty and love the people you rule, find the means to feed them, unfortunately our leaders have no heart for the poverty striken Zambians; they donnot mind who eats and who doesnt eat, no jobs no one thinks about it what a shame
KK’s time free Education up to UNZA level thats why I still have respect. No corruption. MMD can be impower fo hundred years but still would no much with UNIP. KK constucted UNZA,CBU,HOTELS,ROADS,TAZARA,TAZAMA,INDENI TUTA Roads leanding to Chiluba’s village,to mention a feel. I feel pit for pipo like Number one.
Sad, ain’t it? Our current leaders do not seem to have tasted what it is to fight for freedom and get it! If the likes of KK were like our current fimo fimo’s we would never have got independence. Our enemy right now is poverty but ama leaders yesu are not shepherds.
A true shepherd always looks out for his people – because they are the reason he/she’s in power. Nomba ino nshita, awe mwandini. It’s each man for himself! Super Ken ali mukali, had faults but as we all know, alisha legacy which cannot be denied. God help us!
ala, “n.s.h.i.ta” nayo ni nsele?:))
Long Live KK…God bless you Old man…! You did your best!
‘5 where are you coming from. I bet you are not a Zambian. These chaps used everything including UNIP to steal from poor Zambians. KK is just not the right person to talk about this issue of poverty.
#6. What % of Zambia’s population had jobs during KK’s misrule? Unemployment together with others have been problems haunting Zambia from the word go.
Kwena, super Ken, during your time you never allowed anyone to get close to leadership let alone be rich because you will be investigated. You know, its easy to forget and yet this is the man who has taught some of our leaders to hold on to power, enrich themselves and have controlled media. While we acknowledge the fight for freedom, i still have nightmares of this leader holding onto power, instilling fear in people and really holding elections when he was the only candidate and in a one party state. I remebr being beaten by soldiers while lining up for sugar and all the necesities. So now we are talking poverty. After the copper money went God knows where…. Ahhh i am tired of these tired politicians with their tired messages
I have some respect for the bigman, when his time came to leave plot one ha gave us free and fair elections,he lost and he left the plot for the winer. But today its difficault to get free and fair ellections even voting out those in power.”CHIBABA” Viva KK
