Outspoken clergyman Bishop John Mambo has described as a pity the decision by Zambian government to go ahead and sale Zamtel despite the outcry from Zambians.
Bishop Mambo states that from the beginning Zambians have been against the sale of Zamtel.
He said sale of Zamtel should not have been handled in the manner it has been done.
In an interview with QFM today, Bishop Mambo observed that the procedure to sale of Zamtel is also questionable.
Bishop Mambo, who is also a former Board member of the Zambian Privatization Agency, wonders why the Zambian parliament was not involved the whole process leading to the sale.
And the Citizens Forum executive secretary Simon Kabanda has expressed disappointment that the sale of Zamtel has gone ahead.
Mr. Kabanda stated that government should have utilized the evaluation by RP Capital to improve on the operations of Zamtel.
Early this year, former communications and transport Minister Dora Siliya, who was at the helm of the controversy surrounding the sale of Zamtel defended the move.
Ms. Siliya said that the politics surrounding the sale were unfounded and that the sale will benefit the country.

ZACCI should not just give praise for such deals, the consideration given by LAP Green is not good enough, considering that Telco companies give very high returns, see how many times Zain or Celtel has changed hands in the last few years. Its a pity we have educated Zambians like Musokotwane and and those guys at ZDA that can not see that the deal is peanuts considering the huge infrastructure Zamtel has and moreover, the linking of RB’s son and Dora to the illegal appointment of a brief case Company RP Capital makes the whole sale questionable. Most of the Governments in the world still control strategic assets. Politicians should learn to put the interests of the nation first rather than “side kick deals” from RP capital, its a shame in deed.
Why dont we involve parliament in major decisions in Zambia – like privatisation and loans from overseas and local banks. Psare representatives of people.
What we need to ask RP Capital is to publise the fair value of the assets of ZAMTEL. Then we will compare with what they paid us minus costs to sale. From this we will be able to tell whether this was a raw deal or a success. We would also want to see a report on how ZAMTEL should have been made viable other than privatisation.
