Family Affair In Italian Job For Zambia

Share

Dario Bonetti

Zambia is set to have its first-ever official coaching duo by foreign trainers in the form of the Italian sibling pairing of Dario and Ivano Bonetti.

Sources close to the development have revealed that 48 year old Dario Bonetti who is favored to take up the post by State House will be assisted in his younger sibling Ivano as new Zambia coaches.

The duo last documented high profile engagement together was at Dundee United in Scotland that lasted a season from 2000 and 2002.

Should Dario and Ivano get the job, they will be joined by an assistant coach and goalkeeping trainer if they agree terms with the sports ministry under whom, and via State House, the Italian Job will be coming to take over from Herve Renard.

According to the online Wikipeadia, Bonetti made his professional debut in the 1978-79 season with Brescia. He then moved to AS Roma in 1980, and played for the giallorossi until 1986, except for a one season spell at Sampdoria in 1982-83. In 1986 he signed for AC Milan, but failed to impress and moved to Verona only one year later. In 1989 he transferred to Juventus, where he played two seasons. A return to Sampdoria in 1991 was followed by a single season at SPAL in 1992, and retirement in 1993.

In all his whole playing career in the Serie A, Dario Bonetti was suspended for a total of 39 matches, this being as of 2009 an absolute record.

After his retirement, Dario Bonetti became coach of amateur Genoa side Sestrese in 1999, with his brother Ivano as player. Both brothers then jointly managed Scottish team Dundee from 2000 to 2002, with Dario officially acting as Ivano’s technical assistant.  On February 2005, Dario Bonetti was then appointed head coach of Serie C2 club Potenza.

He then announced a surprising move to Hungarian side MFC Sopron on February 2006,  thus joining fellow Italian Giuseppe Signori. Bonetti was then sacked on May 2006, after the final matchday, a 1-0 home loss to Rákospalotai EAC,  but made a comeback at the Hungarian side on March 2007.  On June 22, 2007 he was unveiled as new head coach of Italian Serie C1 team Gallipoli.

On December 2008 he was appointed as new head coach of Lega Pro Prima Divisione team Juve Stabia.

On June 23, 2009 he was appointed as the new head coach of Liga I team Dinamo Bucure?ti, the Italian coach replacing Mircea Rednic. He was sacked by Nicolae Badea, head of Administrative Council of Dinamo Bucharest, as a result of Bonetti’s public statements about Dinamo shareholders on October 3, 2009.

On November 9, 2009, Bonetti was announced as the new head coach of Lega Pro Prima Divisione team Valle del Giovenco. He was fired in February 2010.

  1. Ba zambia makula period. You can change cooks but if the ingredients are the same the food will still stink.

  2. God! Such negativity!!! I know I have always advocated for accept their mediocrity but it shouldn’t be a period situation. Thats not the nature of existence; always try to improve your situation and achieve your goals. this calls for patience, perseverance, resilience, courage, self belief, faith, charity and most of all hope.

  3. Chilombo I hear you., It has been the same story over – changing coaches. Our problem in my opinnion is stractual organisation . We need a good youth program . This would produce more polished players. Look at Ghana . Like a house you can’t just focus on the roof.

  4. This is annoying! Foreign coach? What problem are we solving? This is a sheer waste of time and resources. Zambia does not need a foreign (short term solution) coach. Our needs are structural: investment in soccer administration, coaches, and developmental teams (beginning at primary school age). The saying is true, “You cannot teach an old dog new tricks.” Ignorant of this truth, of all places , is State House. This is scary!!! We can only employ a foreign coach if we either lack foresight or have vested personal gain.

  5. What is expatriate coach nonsense again? This is all marabishi!!! Corruption by Kalusha and his colleague RB. These *****s are drunk with corruption all the time.

  6. Why is State House being consulted? This is the biggest problem even before we go very far. This centralisation of everything at state house has destroyed everything: police, judiciary, and now football. It is RB everywhere, thats biggest problem!!

  7. We are going through the same problems again. These coaches you pick from the streets won’t take us anywhere. We will never learn and the best solution to our problem is to restructure the developmental programmes as was the case in the 80’s and 90’s. Z.C.C.M did a good job so let these so called investors get totally involved.

  8. THIS IS WHAT ZAMBIAN FOOTBALL NEEDS:
Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan has suspended the national side from international football for two years after a poor performance at the World Cup. The team was knocked out in the group stages without winning a single game. The president’s directive is ”to enable the country to put its house in order”.

  9. Spot on #12. In fact Zambia deserves a 5 year suspension from international soccer. Ghana did it and we can see results.

  10. While we are in suspending mood can we also suspend RB from interfering with Zambian football and politics? ;);)

  11. 🙂 Wow! Just looking at his CV, one can easily tell what type of a character this guy is.I hope the chemistry between him and the chipolopolo will bond well. Good luck! :)>-

  12. what’s the mans record, who cares if he coached Dundee Utd. Why do we have a colonial complex ~ the white boy is not the solution. Taxprayers get ready to shell out sum bucks.

  13. Italians are known for hardwork in soccer, I hope this will not be another blunder by FAZ or State House in heading the selection of a foreign coach. Sometimes ladies and gentlemen lets empower our own people by giving them such posts.

  14. Ubupuba pa zambia!!! This gut has ALWAYS BEEN FIRED (either for indiscipline or poor results) throughout his carrer as a trainer and you want him to come and coach a top African team like Zambia????

  15. Give the gentleman a chance and judge him by his results – simply structure his contract in such a way that if he does not deliver, he leaves without a golden handshake. The previous coach did not have a “wow” cv. I cannot remember Ante Buselic’ cv but he delivered.

  16. what a Cv. the man has never even coached a national team not even a big club. it’s like zambians never learn.

  17. Dont worry. What is wrong giving a jobless inlaw a job?Bonetti is Kalusha’s wife’s cousin u dont know.Whether u talk or not u wont be heard.Things start and end at state house pa zed.Sad!
