Pact is doomed, says Machungwa

Share

Luapula Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Machungwa has said the United Party for National Development (UPND) and Patriotic Front (PF)-Pact is doomed because there is no harmonisation of the manifesto between the two.

And Dr Machungwa has said there would be more cracks in the UPND/PF Pact as the country heads for 2011 general elections.

Commenting on the apparent crack in the PF-UPND Pact by competing against each other in Kaoma and Chadiza ward by-elections, Dr Machungwa said the developments were a clear indication that the pact was heading for a demise.

He said him and his fellow MPs foresaw that the pact would crack because none of the two leaders was ready to step aside and give chance to the other to contest the presidency.

“We knew and we have always stated right from the beginning that there is no pact. So what you are seeing is just the beginning of many more to come, especially as we head towards elections,” Dr Machungwa said.

He said it was also surprising to see that the mouthpiece of the pact, one which fully supported the pact and reported in their favour was the same paper that had stated that no true pact could be built on the shifting sands of evasions.

Dr Machungwa said UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema should have announced that he was going to contest the presidency in 2011 or that his PF counterpart Michael Sata would contest as that would have established the credibility of the pact’s existence.

He said the determinant of the pact was who was going to contest the presidency between the two leaders but that none of them was ready to step down.

The MP said the violation of their own pact agreement of not competing against each other in the by-elections was evidence enough that the pact existed only on word and was not going anywhere.

Dr Machungwa said the only thing the duo could do was to start working independently and build on what they already had because all the stakeholders knew that the parties which existed would work independently.

And Kawambwa MP Elizabeth Chitika-Mulobeka said it was just a question of time and the pact would be grounded.

“We all know and everybody is talking about it. There is no pact and there has never been one,” she said.

  1. Those UPND cadres in Chimwemwe (I think it was) who protested the sharing of election candidates between the UPND and PF have a cardinal point. If UPND in Chimwemwe gives way to PF candidates because PF is stronger in that area, when and where are the UPND cadres going to get a chance to stand for elections? Should they go and stand in Choma? These are the basic things that make the whole arrangement silly, and why the Pact will not make sense to both PF and UPND cadres (especially the weaker UPND), only to HH and Sata who are looking at State House without considering the political ambitions of their supporters. And yet this is the essence of politics. So how do you Pact on this basis?

  2. We are voting for the pact even if you put a frog as a candidate. thats how serious we are to be disturbed with this cheap story. Even your most precious wife/Girlfriend you have, sometimes you will have misunderstanding. Does it sanction Divorce just like that

  3. Ba #4 how will voting for a frog change the current situation you find yourself in. This kind of reasoning will not help your cause, infact the reason for this impending split has arisen out of people like you who are reasoning like walls that cant be moved. Wake up and fix things now before you find that on polling day there is no pact and blame the ruling party for rigging. This habit of fikayisova is killing this pact.

  4. Why is Machungwa so scared about the PACT?.Why is he not commenting on UNIP or any other political party?.The answer is simple…the PACT is the biggest party so far and will win by over 65% because people are fed up.Do not force them to announce the presidential candidate because once we do RB will start looking for faults and eventually jail him on tramped up charges.Leave the pact alone and concentrate bootlicking.

  5. DR MACHUNGWA WALOTELA SOSA ICHALO CHILEKUMFWA. THEY THOUGHT THEY COULD SILENCE YOU BUT THEY WILL SILENCE THEMSELVES. MR MMEMBE HAS TOLD THEM THAT COME 2011 IT WILL BE A DISASTER FOR HH AND SATA. WE TOLD YOU THIS PACT IS DOUBLE HEADED SNAKE PULLING IN DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS. AS MMEMBE SAYS IT IS A HOT AIR BALLON ABOUT TO BURST

  6. AT LEAST INSULTS WILL REDUCE FROM BA PF KAPONYAS IN THE DIASPORA. INVITE MMEMBE IF YOU CAN SINCE HE IS TELLING YOU THE TRUTH AND YOU DONT LIKE BEING TOLD THE TRUTH. INSULT THE POST FOR TELLING YOU THAT THE PACT HAS CRACKED

  7. Iam surprised that some I.d.i.o.t.s are now thinking we shall be upset with Mmeembe. He has just proved to you that his Editorial are always objective. You have heard from both sides of the Pact that it is unfortunate and we plan to rectify the problem. no one has said we have failed to agree. Disagreements happens and that doesn’t mean anything. As for my earlier statement about voting for a frog just goes to prove we are intact and we shall not be bought with imposed perceived cracks. VIVA PACT

  8. #5 thats right. this is precisely what is killing us. Fikaisova?? out of about 7 million voters and eligible candidates why go and vote for a frog. thats being a son of a Mad man. Atase!!!! we are voting for RB chapwa

  9. Both parties say the incident was unfortunate.I dont see this as i crack per se,mere misunderstanding.Pact will come out stronger after this hyped small issue

  10. # 11 -PAUL THE OCTOPUS HAS ALREADY PREDICTED WHO THE WINNER IS IN 2O11 ELECTIONS. ITS RB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WE NEED THIS SERIOUS LEADERSHIP. CHECK FRED MMEMBE AND THE POST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. #13-With or without the pact MMD will win in 2011. Infact the formation of the pact is admittance of failure by PF and UPND as individual parties. All Zambians unless those pretending know that HH and Sata can not pave way for each other, if HH did thats it he will be treated like a Dog by Sata. That is very very clear. he will be kicked of the pact in no time all the Garry nkombo s will scamper like the way some of those who were close to FTJ left him when he was in trouble

  12. MACHUNGWA WOULD ACTUALLY WANT THE PACT TO FAIL- He has some issues to sort out with the in coming government. Even MMD has a lot of failures. The only difference is that they are in power and every FLY will want to sing praises in order to be considered for favours. Fact is if some how MMD loses power it be worse than Unip, it not even be in any meuseam or archives.Yes the PACT is not perfect but tell me who is 100% perfect. The “perfection” you see in MMD is for convinince only. Even Patriot will deny he ever knew RB unti the cock crows 3 times.

  13. #15 Just continue supporting your tribes mate and stop pretending that you are analytical. What if Sata paves way for HH how will Sata be treated.

  14. We shall not be swayed by anything or any one in our convictions. If anything, we are learning from these teething problems and will emerge stronger day by day. We always said they’ll be there so we are working hard at resolving them. MMD + Pf rebels I see u are smiling. fair game. u better smile like that when we continue to demonstrate how people driven and serious we are on August 5 when we sweep Luena + Chifubu + the same ward elections.

  15. “I want to begin by saying that it is highly unfair for any member of PF or UPND to blame ECZ over the confusion in the filing of nominations in Kaoma Central and Chadiza local government by-elections. I disagree with putting the blame on ECZ because ECZ has nothing to do with this; this is purely a Pact problem,” Kabimba said. “For us as PF, this situation is indeed regrettable because it goes against the fundamental principles of the PF and UPND communiqué of June 4, 2009, in which we agreed not to compete against each other in any future election. And both parties are bound by that principle in the communiqué.”

  16. On Saturday, Hichilema said ECZ belatedly announced the Kaoma Central and Chadiza ward by-elections.
“…ECZ belatedly announced Chadiza’s Longe ward, Kaoma Central, they announced Mulwa ward in Luampa, Choongo East in Bweengwa, they announced this belatedly. This is part of the scheme the MMD is using ECZ to create confusion in our camp because they know the process we go through. They want to be pulling up surprises. But the onus is on us as the Pact to be ready 24 hours,” Hichilema had said. Kabimba also expressed disappointment with perceptions of a regional split in the Pact.

    GUESS WHO MEMBE IS BACKING!!!

  17. “I also want to clear the point that it has never been the understanding of PF with getting into this pact with the UPND that we shall be dividing this country on a regional basis. It has also never been our understanding that our participation under the Pact will be limited to certain areas of this country to the exclusion of the other areas. This would be a very dangerous approach, and it is actually contrary to the PF constitution.”
He said their participation in the Pact was aimed at harmonising both parties’ strengths.

“Our participation in the Pact is intended to ensure that they bring together the strength of the UPND in all the areas across the country where they have done work from the north to the south, from the west to the east, and have this work complemented by…

  18. “Our participation in the Pact is intended to ensure that they bring together the strength of the UPND in all the areas across the country where they have done work from the north to the south, from the west to the east, and have this work complemented by the PF’s strengths and work in the same areas,” Kabimba said. “We have never had, as PF, this perception that the Pact will be exclusive in participation of any of its members in any region. And if there is such a perception, then it’s unfortunate because such a perception would not strengthen the Pact in any way. It can only weaken it; and we did not get into this pact to be weakened in any way.”

  19. SO WHOSE FOOLING WHO? THAT USELESS TONGA CHICKEN HH HAS FINISHED HIS PARTY. NOW IF HE GETS OUT OF PACT HE WILL BE ACCUSED OF TRIBALISM AND IF HE STAYS HE WILL NEVER GET EVEN NEAR STATE HOUSE!! HAHA WHAT A FOOL. YOU THINK GIVEN AND ALL THOSE SENIOR KAPONYA’S AT PF WILL LET HH GET AHEAD OF THEM?? YOU KAPONYA’S FROM MONZE AND CHOMA GO BACK TO THE VILLAGE. REAL POLITICS IS NOT FOR YOU

  20. Funny how the “Times of Zambia” doezn’t address Dr. Peter Machungwa az PF MP. The so called “rebel PF MPs” are mostly men/women of very high repute and even some of their reazonz for the stand of may be genuine, but holing on to thoze parliamentary seats they won on a PF ticket, iz what iz unacceptable. They can’t have it both wayz.

  21. I am supprised with twits’ thinking, what mistake did the pact committ of which cannot be linked to MMD and UNIP. how many scandals have been there in MMD and yet they continue ruling? what if sata and HH will not stand for 2011 what are you going to do. some people are selfish that they look at things like vinkubala. nurse your problems in MMD and let the Pact nurse their own, who is a perfect being in Zambia? Even RB is the greatest among *****s. HH and sata have so far overcome our tribalism aspect of zambian politics and I pray for them.:-?:-?:-?:)>-:)>-

  22. the PACT wont crack, this is the illusion in the mind of Sick George Kunda and MMD. We shall rally behind the PACT. Just two shared coucillor posts(UPND & PF) competing have made red lipped George Kunda very hapi like a small boy.

The PACT is here to stay, we even celebrated 1 yr of existance. MMD going out and they know it. They are seeing imaginary cracks. In the unlikely event that the PACT unlikely split, MMD is not the altenative. So which ever way they have to leave. Why are they refusing to leave???

  23. but the info is coming from your very own pact partners. did you read what kabimba said today before post removed it from their website????

  24. AS POSTED BY MAESTRO HEHEHEHE HIMSELF:

All the quotes below are from today’s POST Newspapers under a headline of the sort I DISAGREE WITH HH OVER PACT CONFUSION — KABIMBA. On ““I want to begin by saying that it is highly unfair for any member of PF or UPND to blame ECZ over the confusion in the filing of nominations in Kaoma Central and Chadiza local government by-elections. I disagree with putting the blame on ECZ because ECZ has nothing to do with this; this is purely a Pact problem,” Kabimba said” PF Secretary General Winter Kabimba has disrepected UPND president and F-UPND PACT co-leader Hakainde Hichilema (HH) and I hope his boss, PF leader, Mr Michael Chilufya

  25. ““I would like to point out as secretary general of PF that our party is reluctant to be dragged into politics of regionalism whether within the Pact or outside the Pact as was the case in the 2008’s pronouncements by RB in Eastern Province…” what is PF’s stance on the PF-UPND PACT MOU. If PF is aggrieved by the PF-UPND PACT MOU now, let them leave the PF-UPND PACT instead of trying to smear the mighty UPND Group with REGIONALISM. Therefore, let him remove the ambiguity in his statement ““I also want to clear the point that it has never been the understanding of PF with getting into this pact with the UPND that we shall be dividing this country on a regional basis

  26. Is this not the same Machungwa who emblezzled Parliamentary funds with the late Mandandi?.Muchingwa is a well known thief, those of you who have forgotten should remember that Machungwa stole over K2billion together with Mr.Mandandi and he has never been jailed yet.

  27. The problem Pf has is that they are never positive on other people, even some of these pf bloggers have the same spirit of blame on others, and this will lead the pact to fail. Please pf guys ye s we are Bembas by nature but let us be mature enough to accommodate others’ views. Some people in these areas where HH is strong do not trust Mc Sata’s behaviour such as North-western, Western and Southern and even parts of the central province and were trying to trust him through HH trying to convince them. I can tell you the truth Sata has tried to camping in these areas in the past elections, many people have attended his rallies but whrn it comes to votes he gets 5 or 20 votes. As pf let us try to mend things within the house and not to blame each other outside. We need to change our ways…

  28. As pf we have to change our way of thinking, people do not trust us because we do not know how to harmonise issues and move forward. The last time pf was campaigning in Chawama and Sata kept saying pf is winning elections in 2011 and not pact, and you can imagine if it was UPND producing those words it was going to be noise. We need to remove the big log from our eyes before trying to pull a spake of dust from others’ eyes. We cannot win elections on our own at the moment because our popularity has gone down, we need UPDN more than ever. We cannot insult HH because he is the chief sponsor of the party and Upnd is dead without HH. Let us learn to work together by identifying our positives and not to dwell on negatives, but we can learn something from our mistakes..

  29. number 7 imbwa iwe dont exhibit your ignorance publicly PACT is not a political party but two parties with different manifestos working together.its only one party to stand and meaning the other dies.wake up are you tonga? ubututu..

  30. Machungwa’s constituency is the least developed in Zambia with only 3 basic schools. Most of his people are illiterate and have never set a foot in class. Machungwa has done nothing for this very poor comunity other enriching himself. He just keeps yapping about the pact and FTJ at the expense of developing his area. What a shame!!
