New Chingola mine to create 3,000 jobs

Share

AFRICAN Rainbow Minerals (ARM) is set to create about 3,000 jobs at its new mine in the north of Chingola where construction for the production of copper by 2015 has started.

Mines and Minerals Development minister Maxwell Mwale said in an interview in Lusaka that the company would start producing copper in the next five years.

The minister said construction has already started at Konkola North to produce 45,000 tonnes of copper in concentrate in the first phase of the project but this would increase in the second phase to 100,000 tonnes.

And ARM executive chairperson said in a media release on its website that the company was building the new mine in the country with its partner, Vale and described the project as exciting to its diverse commodity portfolio.

The partners had a three-year exploration programme to supply material into that expansion.

The two mining firms were in talks with Mopani Copper Mines, Chambishi Copper Mines and Vedanta Mineral Resources to treat their concentrate.

ARM and Vale spent 18 months studying the copper market and the expectation was for them to grow.

The price of a three-month copper contract on the London Metal Exchange rose 9.75 to 7314,25 a tonne last week.

The reason for the anticipated rapid growth at the new mine was that Anglo American operated Konkola until the late 1950s, when it sunk a 420m-deep shaft there.

ARM and Vale hope to rehabilitate and re-equip the mine, which was forecast to have a life span of 28 years.

  1. I thought Mr. Sata stated that the industry is not growing due to high mining taxes. What is Mr. Sata’s comment on this?

Coming to the story, I think the development is great though I still feel Zambia is too reliant on the industry. Zambia is Africa’s largest honey exporter (California’s main industry). Perhaps we could grow that further aswell.

    However good development.

  2. So it’s not a new mine but an old one being done up…. 3000 jobs plus a few more from support services and other knock on effects. The future looks good . As long as demand for the commodity is strong , all’s well. Now ,let’s weigh this against the adverse impact on the environment and on health . In our quest for what we understand as economic development we’d rather not think too much about these inconvenient truths. Try telling that to somebody who’s finally able to put food on the table and send all their children to school as a result of jobs from the mine .They won’t wanna hear about toxic mining waste finding it’s way into the soil ,the rivers, the water table and eventually into the food chain leading to all sorts of health problems well into future generations. Is it…

  3. # 3 cont…..Is it worth it? What is the true cost of mining?
The mine operators don’t give a fu*k. They are out to make a killing.

  4. Wonder what PF supporters feel about Sata’s turn about regarding the minining taxes. At first he wanted higher taxes, then he opposed them when they were introduced, then he opposed the govt when the new mining taxes were brought in and now he changes his mind again. Can a PF supporter please explain what is your party’s stance on the mining taxes? Anyways this is good news for Chingola and Zambia. I have relatives in the town and I hope some of them will be able to get a job while those with businesses should see their incomes increase. Well done HERB!

  5. African Rainbow belongs to Patrice Motsepe, who the South African government has helped through there Black empowerment policy. Ala’s nothing can be written about RB or the MMD with regards Citizen economic empowerment. What a shame!!!

  6. I don’t know if its you bwana editor or these followers of kamwendo munjila who don’t know what they are talking about. This mine is in Chililabombwe and not Chingola get your facts correct.

  7. 7, We have read for ourselves, yes it is in Chililabombwe. But the point is that a new mine will be opening and creating 3,000 jobs. Yet another ntepe for MMD and H.E.R.B. for sound economic policy and wooing invetsors. Whatever you detractors will say, all this is happening during RB’s reign. Not music to Satanists, unfortunately.

  8. So, what sort of wages are we expecting from them once they get to employing Zambians? I hope they salary scheme will go with both the education and experiance … pantu twanaka notuntemba sort of salaries!

The real sinsister behind FQM’s Frontier’s closure is known to just the Congolese themselves – after the local Congolese highlighted and stressed the point where the so called investers filled 98% of the management positions with the White South African Mzunguz, who were doing the job on training.

Make sure you are confortble with bringing an expatriate Painter or Electrician from South Africa before you do so. Zambians are now experienced enough to be in management! Please check our Zambian labour laws and ensure we have reserved positions for a Zambian; ubunonshi…
