I didn’t flee from court—British diplomat

Share

BRITISH High Commission consular officer Karen Michelle Van Boxtel

BRITISH High Commission consular officer Karen Michelle Van Boxtel, who is accused of assaulting her husband Carl Frieslaar, has refuted reports suggesting that she had fled the country for fear of appearing before the court.

Ms Van Boxtel said yesterday in an interview that she had never left the country, contrary to claims by her husband that she had run away with her children.

She said in the presence of her lawyer Chifumu Banda that it was malicious for her husband to claim that she had left the country when she had been within.

“It is very malicious for my husband to claim that I had left the country. He is saying that to influence the police because I cannot leave Zambia because this is my country,” she said.

She said Mr Frieslaar had been emotionally and physically abusive from the time she filed for divorce in August and had paid a private investigator to trail her.

“He knows that he cannot have me anymore, so he is bitter and wants to frame me because even my surety has not left the country,” he said.

She claimed that even the private investigator James Kasamanda had allegedly been lying on her movements because he wanted to please Mr Frieslaar who had paid him money.

On the three children, Ms Van Boxtel said she was living with them because the eldest was seven years old, while the youngest was three and that the court had granted her custody of the children.

But Mr Frieslaar said he was not bitter with his wife and that he welcomed her intentions to file for divorce because he could no longer live with her.

He said he was ready for the divorce and that he wanted to be with his children adding that his wife had defied a court order that asked her not to have custody of the children.

Ms Van Boxtel in the company of two other persons was alleged to have assaulted her husband a month ago and the matter had since been reported to the police.

But Lusaka police commanding officer Greenwell Ng’uni has said that Ms Van Boxtel and Mr Frieslaar had both reported assault cases to the police and that dockets had been taken to the Director of Public Prosecutions for further instructions.

  1. These are the word:“He knows that he cannot have me anymore, so he is bitter and wants to frame me because even my surety has not left the country,”

From these sentiments, its clear Chikondi palibe between these once Love birds and looks like the woman is now in love with Zimbabwean farmer.Bazungu vikondi vimasila fast eish!! They are too liberal with love unlike ours who are ready to be battered.

  2. Ba LT, Not everyone working for an embassy is a diplomat. Please clarify. She says Zambia is her country which puts doubt to your assertion. Even from her name, sounds like an immigrant from down our southern border.

  3. Yesterday I was shocked with the levels of ignorance and excitement with some of the bloggers. My question is:Does it mean that every JO and JAY should put a comment to any TOPIC reported? Why cant we just comment on issues which we have informaton only. You see the Van Boxtels have are Zambians and who were born, bred and educated here all there lives. This girl and her brother Kelvin are third generation Zambians. So really its difficult to know who concorted this tale of fleeing for someone who has everything to lose by running. I play golf a Chilanga Golf Club and everyone will tell you about Air Varnia and the Von Boxtel. And not this fake Private investigator. What a bad job! This guy should be arrested for passing wrong info to the ZP if indeed no one fleed.

  4. let her divorce him.what is she suffering for.she can look after herself because she has the moneys to do so besides shes well equipped.go go mama and leave loser alone.i cant even spend a second with a holigan like him.how pathetic.

  5. Even the Editor at Times of Zambia is bringing down the name of Times of Zambia in to desrepute (or he is on the pay role of this husband) Not all people who work at the Embassy are diplomats. It is clear that this lady is a local staff and is not an Envoy. No wonder the British High Commission isnt saying anything because they dont want to sink so low to the level of the Times and husbad. This is clearly a domestic issue between this lady and the husband and it has nothing to do with the British High Commission. This husband is very childish and must be paying the poor journalist to publish a story which does not meet the minimum standards of a news story worth publishing in a National newspaper. I wouldnt be surprised if this Editor is fired if the High Commission complains to MFA.

  6. to MFA because this is clearly a case of diplamitic insolence of the highest order. Mr editor when you are fired this guy wont look after you. This is just a friendly advise from a concerned Zambian blogger. If he doesnt want her any more and she doesnt want him why engage people to trail hera and take her pictures and story to the news papers? Times Editor people are watching, wake up before its too late asakusilizila inchito uyu coloured gonga

  7. hahaha i can also confirm chilanga boys statement as i also played golf with Kevin at chilanga once or twice in my younger days, on a more serious note though, whose office is that in the pic? its a mess vima files piled up everywhere

  8. Looks like the private detective is one big liar, if he was quoted right in the earlier story where he was reported to have said that he saw this lady board a Zambezi Airlines plane bound for South Africa. Or perhaps she did board it and later disembarked before the plane took off?

  9. Karen, just sue your hubby, the Times of Zambia and LT for poor journalistic standards by not establishing the facts before publishing the story. They owe you

  10. She boarded the Zambezi airliner to go to Livingstone to be chewed by a new boyfriend. ha ha the private investigator thought it’s to bolt. Well this story will have a very bad ending, guns will boom. mark my words. Guns will go off cause this lady is playing with fire and boasting. I know the former or is it current husband. He is peaceful but with a serious temper when provoked. This lady can do right by lying low for now.

  11. I can see the Editor (Joseph) at the Times of Zambia packing his bags, I have information the British Ambassador has written a note verbal complaining about the name of the Diplomatic Mission being trashed and pulled in to a domestic issue. Hehehe! I said it Joseph, now tell Mr Frieslaar to employ you once Shikapwasha fires you. These guys still dance to the donors tune even though they sound defiant in public. Times of Zambia11 (Publish at your own peril because after this the lady will sue you and the bogus investigator. Eat your last kwacha my friends. Iwe Mpangula Mputyu this mental suspect wife abuser cant do anythinthing. Bamukan che, obviously the lady went through hell. you have said he has hot temper, he is a mental block that guy ask ku Chainama hospital and Care for Business Hos

  12. The credibility of any story is determined by the source of the story. On LT, i was once insulted when I suggested that any reasonable person would be careful with information from Times of MMD and Daily MMD mail. I know the reporters working for these organisations can do a good job, but out of poverty, they cannot reject manipulation from politicians, especially of the rulling class. Such is the shame that the two organisaitons will live with for a long time. Unfortunately, even when PACT comes into power, Times will simply change the G-string, and continue with the same level of media prostitution. The day we overcome this problem Zambia will be developed. The day we will be ready to say “No” and mean it, we will be ok. Lets promote professional ethics in Zambia. Eee ni Fwaka, 4give…

  13. Its not difficul to refuse to be used; better suffer than shame yourself in this manner ba Times. And this applies to so many of our young men and women of this great land; we do not know the difference between fear and respect. To refuse to participate in something awlful like stealing is often confused with the “fear” of the boss to fire you and the like. Which accountant would like to go through what Stella Chibanda has gone through? Career destroyed!! Keep it simple stupid (KISS) and rely on your professional ethics. Refuse with a smile!

  14. Isnt this so called private investigator James Kasamanda an ex-Army Captain who was discommissioned and discharged from the Army in the late 1980’s for spying. He was been used by the CIA.

The Zambian Daily Mail and the Times of Zambia should never be taken seriously. These are newspapers which constantly in their articles refer to the Government as the State. So it is asking too much to expect them to understand that if indeed Karen Van Boxel were a diplomat the Zambian govt would’ve had to request the British govt to waive her diplomatic immunity so as to have her day in court. Unfortunately there is too much illiterace and ignorance in Zambia for people to understand issues like this one.

  15. We now have confirmed reports that Mr Frieslaar has a mental problem and the wife (soon to be ex) has been on his side enduring the abuse. The problem with this guy is that he smokes chamba and takes other concoctions and the lady is against all this. She had given him an ultimatum to quit chamba or she leaves him. He did not listen so she filed for divorce in August. And thats the main reason she cant let him look after the kids bcz he is not stable mentally. MEDICAL RECORDS ARE THERE AT CARE FOR BUSINESS and Chainama. He says he is happy to divorce the lady but at the same time he is employing people to trail her! Why? Bakakukana mwana ninshi bakukana. Lets see if you can find another woman and prove your ex wife wrong. The more you falsly accuse her the more facts will come out abt U.

  16. James Kasanda was aquitted of those charges…but he is as dangerous as they come..he visits ‘popular’ night spots taking pictures of people he ‘targets’…if blackmail does not work he then alerts an unsuspecting spouse then all hell breaks loose….

  17. This Captain sure knows how to make a living; there is a lot of vigororo in Lusaka so he is just using his initiative. Well done, lay them bare, if possible they get stoned on the outskirts of Lusaka…

  18. What a sellout this James character is.I dont see why domestic issues are clouding the media these days.People marry & divorce everyday. That lady does not work for any Zambian organisation i wonder why the insistence from Times of MMD probably trying to embarras the Office

  19. ‘Captain’ James Chanda Kasamanda sure loves being involved in scandals! Ubwa ka lema ta leka… First it was the Army, then ACC and now he runs a PI company! Umu lomo, ubufi, no ku temwa indalama… just about sums him up!

  20. When the story first broke I doubted its veracity regarding the lady being a diplomat, as the police would not just jump in and arrest her without considering issues of diplomatic immunity. A few passed sniggering, albeit ignorant comments saying the police could do anything.

  21. Sister Karen Michelle Van Boxtel, Zambia is your country you are free to dwell here no need to run away. The GRZ will protect every woman be her white, black, yellow or what ever. One Zambia One Nation.

  22. 14,15,I need not say more, well articulated.Bloggers please recall that TZ and DZM pounced on this story(more accurately were instructed to carry the story) in the wake of donor bashing. They are deliberately using terms like diplomat and envoy to mislead us all and sway us into agreeing with the notion that the brits mean ill and are interfering……so we can forget about an appeal for one Lazo’s London judgement. We can overlook crap from POST and LT but not from a paper or broadcaster funded by our own tax!!! It so shameful on us as a nation to realise we are being fed on half truths once the truth comes out like today

  23. Poor Karen. I know what it is like been in such a relationship and how these abusive men will act when they realise the person they control is free of them. He will try to ruin her reputation and make her look crazy and unstable.
That so called investigator should be ashamed of himself, following and harassing a poor woman and her kids for a few dollars. This must be a very stressful time for her. I was in similar situation where tempers would flare for the most insignificant thing and my 5’4 stature was no match for the hell i called a hubby, if it wasn’t fighting them I was flirting with people I did not even know or ever met, some malicious people (women)would take delight in my sufferings and create stories and rumours that had no truth to them knowing very well how that would up.

  24. When I escaped that torture house with my kids I was made to look a fool all because he had money. I was dragged to court, made to look unstable and crazy and even with my severe black and blue eyes, scars and bruises for the whole world to see I was the bad guy trying to take the kids away from this wonderful man. Thank God we got away from him but it was hell. I had lost so much weight-these abusive men will never leave you alone, they will fight you to your grave cus he just can’t accept this person is not under his control.
Karen, you are better off taking you kids out of that country and live where this sort of c r a p is not tolerated, he will not leave you alone. Do the right. He has money you will end up losing you mind just leave mama. Run!!

  25. #27- GRZ will not protect anyone. Reporting a domestic dispute to the police is a waste of time, in fact the abuser will even laugh at you if you threaten them with police action. The police make women feel humiliated by even trying to blame the battering on her. I was once told by a cop it may well be my fault and wife battering was common-even he does it to his wife! I was told to go home and talk it over! That came from the person who meant to protect society.

  26. Karen looks like my other half. So no point coming to Zedee as the “Zim Dollar” farmers might scope her off me?!

Do not condon domestic fimofimo! Men who like to hit their wives should join some sort of a fight club so that other men can clobber them!

  27. Going by the comments above; It seems wives/partners have every right to pound their husbands to near death. The photo of the guy in Hospital clearly shows that he was badly beaten even being smashed by bottles and stamped to the ground. We have not seen this lady in bruised state, but we have seen the husband in worse state than even GBM wife, but remember how the women associations and MMD were calling for GBM’s blood. What if this guy had died? She is nothing but a dangerous and evil lady, she had every right to file for divorce before the assault.

  28. Nakumiza

The husband got hammered by fellow men after witnessing him hitting his wife in a public place, its not she set out these people to beat up her husband. You see if it got to a stage where he felt confident enough to start beating her in public and in front of her relatives and friends you can only imagine behind doors. He got what he had coming for a long time. And in typical abusive husband behaviour he blames the woman and tries to make her look bad saying her boyfriends beat him. I saw his picture and only when you have been in an abusive relationship will you understand the glee one feels to see someone who has a punchbag for a wife beaten to a pulp and looking just like his victim usually looks. Do you know Karen to say you have never seen her bruised?

  29. #15 FWAKA, If you want to find a raw and sensational journalist visit THE POST,where as journalists at times and daily mail tow the goverment line at the post it’s the whims of one individual who is involved in vicious political wars.membe cows those poor souls to write it that he wants to be written

  30. The “diplomat” has been convicted for drunk driving in the U.K. on a Zambian licence 20 years ago.
She has a lot of skeletons in her closet!
How she got a position at the British High commission with her past is unbelievable!
The messy desk is very symbolic:-?

  31. I believe this is one of the so much significant info for me. And i am glad studying your article. However should statement on few normal things, The site style is wonderful, the articles is in point of fact great : D. Just right activity, cheers
