Olympic Youth Development centre consultant Clement Chileshe (l) and sports ambassador Samuel Matete at the sports centre in Lusaka.

Former 400 metre hurdles world champion Samuel Matete has said that the current Zambia Amateur Athletics Association (ZAAA) administration has not done much to tap talent country wide.

Addressing a meeting in Livingstone today, Matete says it was saddening to note that the ZAAA Leadership under the renowned sports administrator Elias Mpondela seemingly concentrates its activities in Lusaka.

He said that in his time the ZAAA leadership was very effective and that’s how he managed to reach at the top of his career.

Matete said that ventures like the intercompany relay are a good development by the current administration but money raised should be channeled to the Talent Identification Programs (TIP) which are meant to tap talent around the country.

He said that it is sad that most mining investors in the Copper belt do not invest in sports infrastructure and that in his days the mines had good sports infrastructure which helped most of the people of the Copperbelt to be good Athletes .

Matete also mentioned that it is very important to develop different sport in Zambia before talking about sports infrastructure develop because this will prompt stake holders like government and private sector to see for themselves that sports has developed for them to invest.

He said that sports has changed peoples lives and that it has proved to be a unification factor in the world. Becomes it bring people from different back grounds.

Matete also said that sports plays a part in tourism development when a particular nation is known for its excellence in a particular sport people will visit that nation and also visit` tourist attractions to bring in foreign exchange.

And speaking at the same function Southern Province Sports Coordinator Gibson Muyaule said that the province has been number one in athletics in its nine year reign .

He added that ZAAA should be very effective in all Provinces for Zambia to produce a lot of sports men who wil in turn participate in international completions.

  1. Matete you are partially correct however true talent identification comes out from schools because schools are better organised than ZAAA .Mr Mpondela it’s high time he left the reigns of power to someone else i think he been there for far too long and he has not produced the desired results like he’s currently turning around NHA where he has made significant progress.

  2. Mr Mpondela time’s at the helm of ZAAA should be checked. Since I started following ZAAA activities in the early 90s, it has been Mpondela. What is the problem here in Zambia, we want to leave leadership to few peopple even if they cannot bring new ideas. Or it that us Zambian fear responsibilities. Please give chance to people like Matete who seem to have vast experience in this sport period. This goes to politics we still want old madalas to be running this country.Let us change for the better.

  3. Matete,Mpondela was busy chasing the late MinFin senior Economist’s wife and from time to time,I used to see him at Chilenje Local Court where he was dragged for adultery.Later on,he become a GBM and battered his wife like hell but this woman was not like Chama, she gave him a boot and in no time he wa a divorce. With all these events,I dont expect Mpondela to do a good job at ZAAA.Take over please!!!!

  4. #3 Sharp Shooter, I cant comprehend you point here, who fronted Chilenje Court, was it Mpondela or Matete?? I also agree that ZAAA has not made recommendable progress. Mpondela can still be at ZAAA for as long as he is making progress but if he is not then it will be appropriate to canvass ideas about what is workable in ZAAA and govt should also commit itself to support the sport and only focusing on soccer.

  5. Sport development and youth are the last things on our governments agenda. Did you any of you hear/ read the presidents parliamentary address? No mention of Sport!!!

  6. Elias Mpondela has been a failure history speaks for itself eg Duly’s Motors limited once the biggest motor company in Zambia was grounded by his management style. Very soon it will be National Housing Authority. What Alias knows best is talking and making noise. Its time we had a positive change at all levels of ZAAA that will identify young talents. Lets boot Elias and his committee.

  7. Matete you stop going to zibsip and instead focus on going round the country to look for talent.

You ought to be ashamed that you have not been able to pass on your experiences to a fellow zambian.

    Stop being selfish like kalusha!

  8. Jade # 9, you are a best and most educated fool i have ever hear. how can Matete or Kalusha pass their talents to the young zambians when there are no modalities that allow them to do that. no more inter school competitions, all sports facilities are dead, so what can they do? both kalusha and matete are not pastors that they can lay their hands on you ***** son if you have any and by the power of the holy ghost they become experts. even here in states good training is due to good facilities that supplement continuous training for someone to be a good sports man. for some of you shutting up is better.
