251 Zambians get HIV/AIDS infected daily – UN

Share

The United Nations UN says 226 adults and 25 children get infected every day in Zambia.

UN Resident Coordinator Kanni Wignaraja, however, said that it is gratifying to note that most men are voluntarily choosing circumcision while mothers are accessing services to prevent passing HIV to their infants .

Ms. Wignaraja also stated that only 15 percent of adults in Zambia know their HIV/AIDS status.

She was speaking at the commemoration of World AIDS Day in Lusaka today.

Ms. Wignaraja said milestones reached in Zambia have been made possible because of the existing unity among families, communities, government, and cooperating partners.

She has since called on all cooperating partners not to discriminate anyone with the diseases as death is possible in everyone’s lifetime.

On the global level, Ms. Wignaraja said new HIV/ AIDS infections have reduced by 20 percent.

The UN Resident Coordinator said that there are less people who are being infected with HIV and dying from the pandemic.

Ms. Wignaraja has noted that with commitment and solidarity, the fight against HIV/AIDS is assisting the world community to pay more attention against the epidemic.

“As stated by the United Nations Secretary General, we have significantly reached the first part of the Millennium Development Goal 6—by halting and beginning to reverse the spread of HIV. We must continue to chart a new and bold path ahead,” She said.

  1. That is close to 100,000 people getting infected with HIV per year. This is way too high given our small and young population. This AIDS pandemic needs a more serious and vigorous approach to stem the tide.

  2. woo, guys- dont you think this is too much-226 per day? can any one in here please educate us on this infection-i feel like this is way high-226?

  3. Too much buhule nowadays even the married folk are throwing their juices around . You bettre be careful because some HIV infected people are out there getting their groove on without a care if they infect others, Evil B******tards.

  4. This is war between a strong army against a weak and divided nation. It spells defeat. Are we fighting agaist one another or aginst AIDS? Take that responsiblity each day that comes. In my shanty compound, I have seen how people on ARVs, have taken advantage of their improved health and spread the virus. Re-infection is not considered. Resposibility is being taken. Let’s unite against AIDS!

  5. Tut tut tut… Bullshit. How did they arive at those figures? HIV will be with us dor many more years to come. Live with it, Otherwise shut the f*&k up!!!

  6. The infection rate is too high because there are some undiagnosed cases since only 15% know their status. If only poverty can be tackled in Africa all this will be history. Empower a woman and she will be free from an abusive husband who cannot look after himself…

  7. This is bullshit, ninshi twashala banga? looking at the population of zed, we are less than 12 million. if 251 get infected on a daily basis, then we would all be wiped out by the pandemic in less than two months.

  8. Not too long ago they told us that our numbers were showing that the number of infections has dropped. What happened this time?

  9. Shocking stats but I feel our leaders (political, church, civil society) need to do more in the area of pragmatic solutions. Preaching abstinence (like big nose Shikapwasha) doesn’t help! If our leaders could push for VCT and condoms, we wouldn’t have such a large number of infections and we’d save $millions on ART. KK was in denial for a long time despite losing his son to Aids; kafupi even banned condom ads on tv but ironically lost his sons to the pandemic! It’s good to see KK now being a great HIV/Aids ambassador.

  10. all what the UN whoever saod is a lie. These guys just need to justify the funding and hence coming up with cooked figures. Shame indeed. If those stats are true, almost everyone could have been HIV positive.

  11. 12,000,000 (zed population) /251(infected people in a day) = 47809(days).

    47809(days) /365 (days in a year)=131(years).

    131(years) +2010=2141.
Therefore,by 2141 almost everyone will have gotten infected.Whether priests, nuns, pastors etc.But i stand to be corrected and advised…..going by my calculations, analyses and conclusions

  12. Comment 15, you got it wrong bro. AIDS is not something where you arrive at conclusions using useless calculations and false statistics. AIDS is a disease of the poor continents, poor countries, poor residental areas and poor individuals. AIDS wont wipe out America because they are rich. By the same understanding, AIDS wont wipe out residents of ,say, Olympia Main because they are rich. It is us in Garden, Misisi etc to be wiped. In short, regardless of the high rate at which AIDS spreads, certain continents, countries, residential areas and individuals wont catch it. I too stand to be corrected.
