Government has disclosed that about 25 billion kwacha is needed to cater for the national shortfall of 400, 000 school desks.

Education minister Dora Siliya said the ministry has plans to purchase desks in bulk to avoid shortfalls.

Ms. Siliya was speaking in Lusaka today when she met 38 local desks manufacturers from across the country.

She said it is important for Zambians to appreciate giving business to the local manufacturers as they have the capacity to produce quality products.

Ms. Siliya added that promoting local manufacturers would help fight joblessness as more jobs will be created for the locals.

The Minister disclosed that government has a target of constructing about 100 high schools across the country by 2012-2013.

Ms. Siliya said the construction of the high schools cannot be done at once but in stages.

  1. If we have a short fall of 400000, were have the kids been sitting while Banda is globe-trotting every corner of the world? 400000 soundings like every school in the country has no desks at all.

  2. Sounds like Dora wants to make some money again. If it wasn’t for the Zamtel scam, I would have thought this is a good idea. But it sounds like a scary amount of money will go missing knowing the procurement procedures Dora follows!

  3. Fellow zambians, how many trades training Institutes are zambia and how many students for carpentry who writing exams? Just tell the them to make 10 desks each as final exam and relocate that money to some other things in the country. That is the system common in some of this countries we are living in.That 25bn is too much vocational schools can make desks if you use my advice.:-?:-?:-?

  4. #3 Kaka, your idea is good. The same K25bn can be paid to the Trades Institutes who needs that money for various projects. They can expand their workshops produce more stuff.

  5. This is a nullity, this cow is always up to no good and you bet all the 38 local desks manufacturers from across the country she met will have to oil her voluptuous “wowowo” with “nchekelako naneo”, just like she did with Zamtel. The question that begs an answer too is, just how could the shortfall escalate to 400, 000 school desks? What was the government doing all this time while the situation was getting worse and one would also like to know what measures are going to be put in place to ensure that there is a sustained supply to prevent such colossal shortfall in the future? You bet Dora does not know, the girl is so fat, and dull. She rose into cabinet via other “means”, not by ability.

  6. Ala, guys check out the picture of Bwezani and the red-lipped snake on the front page of the Post. You bet there is “ichipongoshi” between these two and its Thandiwe I fear is in danger of being uprooted from Plot 1 by an even younger spinster sambamulopa, the ones akulu mphuno likes most.

  7. mwandi dora dont listen to people like 7 and 8. you can always count on me for i will foreever be behind your back. especially iwe no 7, what do you mean ” what was the government doing when this shortfall was escalating? Do you know Chris Matthews at MSNBC ( some American TV station)? This guy is running a series depicting malawian school children sitting on floors for want of school desks. And , yes you guess correctly, there is an international fund to buys desks for schools in malawi and these are rolling into malawi like you can never imagine. but with Dora, she is not going to resort to DEAD AID! Thats how tough she is. Viva Dora! And shame on the HATERS!!!
