  1. For the information of fellow bloggers on this site abortion is legal in Zambia if you follow the provisions of the 1972 Termination of Pregnancy Act. It is quite liberal, except people don?t know the law even exists. This is bcoz politicians what to keep the law quiet, with all these Christian nation issues. Sad to lose a young girl like this.

  4. Had a mate in LSK that was involved in the practice. His makeshift hospital was ever packed with women folk ready to go under the knife. The guy used to earn bucks mwe and we used to drink everyday. We used to call it mafumo money.Lucky dude, he never made a mistake.

  5. Ja abortion is legal in Zambia so the clinical officer did nothing wrong according to Zambian law. However, I know that most of us dont even know that such kind of a law exist. Same with Capital Punishment. These two laws should be abolished….we are losing inoccent lives. Hope they wont punish the poor clinical officer!!

  6. #8Just because abortion is legal does not mean that the clinical instructor in question can not be charged if he is found to have been negligent whilst undertaking his duties. I for one feel that a woman has a right to choose whether or not she should have an abortion. Making abortion illegal would actually increase such cases as people would be forced to visit back street abortions carried out by people with dubious qualifications. Wealthier women would be in a better position as they would be able to travel to to countries where they can obtain a legal and hopefully safe abortion.

  7. MHSRIP- Even in Kabwata, so many of them guys doing the same , hope one day everyone will be arrested before many more die.

  8. abortion is legal but is this clinical officer qualified enough to perform such procedures? in the name of cost saving (on the girls part) or making a quick buck (on the officers part) a doctor should have done this MUCH earlier than 4months.

osanama boza iwe. The Abortion and termination of pregnancy act has conditions for this to happen legally. Two doctors must be satisfied and sign that those conditions are fulfilled. Zambian medical staff do a lot of illegal and unethical things that is why some are in the West! Sleeping with patients, abortions etc. This chap is just a clinical officer not even a dokota, atase

  10. #17 Its not a lie to say abortion is legal IF you follow the provisions of the 1972 TOP Act. I didn’t say you can just go and have it. There are conditions in the act which are open to interpretation and that’s why its so liberal. A Clinical Officer is not qualified to do this procedure. You want to paint everyone with the same brush when only one person has messed up. Looks like you don’t just like medical staff? Wait until you sister is raped by your father and she becomes pregnant, then let’s see you condemn abortions.

  11. Abortion is illigal in zambia except under certain condition these are1. if pregnancy is a danger to mum, 2. if the unborn child will have negative pyschococial on the existing children (paraphrased) and 3. if the unborn child has a condition that makes his/her survival impossible. 2 doc have to certify. so NO 17 is correct.
but i think what this say case does is to bring female reproductive health into question. issues of health information, contraceptives access to qualified health personnel and legal issues. these issues in their complexity need frank confrontation.
