Patriotic Front leader Michael Sata says that the office of the Auditor General should be allowed to audit the electoral commission of Zambia (ECZ).
Mr. Sata has charged that the office of the Auditor General has for the past years not been able to audit the ECZ because it was barred by the then Director Danny Kalale.
Mr. Sata also noted that his party has learnt of judge Florence Mumba’s resignation with a lot of regret adding that the government has forced her to resign because she is a woman of integrity who strived to conduct the operations of the commission in a clean manner.
Mr. Sata adds that the resignation of the ECZ chairperson will have an implication on this year’s general election as it is clear that the government is only interested in engaging corrupt people in the elec toral process.
The opposition leader also observed that dismissed ECZ Director should not be reinstated by whoever will be appointed as chairperson until all the allegations leveled against him that led to his dismissal are cleared by the enforcement agencies.

Political will from leaders like SATA himself is not giving any indication of establishing an independent Electoral Commission.
In my view SATA is merely a threat to Democracy becoz If he is voted into power through a pact there will be 1) more confusion on who succeeds him, tell me who in the PF will allow someone from UPND to take over as President not even Sata Himself. 2) a second term for President Banda automatically mean a change in Presidential candidate for the MMD and therefore the change we all need . Independent view, treat it as one.

Sadly, Sata has missed the boat. This government DOES NOT do anything about Auditor-General’s reports. Whether there is an audit or not at ECZ, corruption as blessed by the MMD will go on. Sata and other leaders must start looking at Tunisia and Egypt for guidance.

Sata is like Carlos Menem of Argentina who campaigned on vague populist policy of “Productive Revolution” and “Salariazo(jargon for big salary increases)”.Alas,once he assumed power,he did the complete opposite of what he was preaching.He became the darling of the IMF and did massive privitisation ever seen in the country while sending thousands jobless(Of course the economy stabilised but at a cost in employment cos that was the right thing to do and NOT the populism he was preaching).So with Sata’s incosistencies,PF cadres should brace themselves for the worst cos what Sata says is not on his agenda.Thats why he does not want to give out his manifesto but rather play to the gallery for the needed support.

As a political opposition leader, Mr. Sata is legally entitled to call for the auditing of the ECZ in support of transparency, which will benefit all voters. What is suspicious about that?
I’m more interested in the circumstances which forced judge Florence Mumba to resign. There is smoke without fire in politics and usually more to it than meets the eye. There must be a clearly identifiable reason for a senior government official to subsequently throw in the towel. Or we will assume it’s quid pro quo.

the only reason people like Sata is becoz if decisive and action oriented. One of the characteristics of charismatic leaders. Sata’s point can’t be ignored by well thoughtful people. I guess they must have realized that the MMD government can’t work well with mumba florence as she refused to be used and what’s the best way to oust her out you use a decoy or shifting attention method. I can see there’s a lot of sycophancy here; especially for Sata’s worshipers. I don’t see that government is against auditing ECZ. In fact this is the best chance to clean up the commission, take appropriate action and appoint new office holders to the satisfaction of all. Is the ECZ’s chairperson nominated by the president to be ratified by parliament or is it a direct appointment and how are the rest of the commissioners selected?

I had the opportunity and privilege of talking to one of the commissioners who I happen to know and, in my view, not partisan. The commissioner told me categorically that George Kunda summoned Justice Mumba and accused her of being a PF supporter. Justice Mumba was evidently outraged and decided to resign. My informant also informed me that Chilekwa who was a spokesperson for the striking workers was a driver who recruited by a relative who was one of the senior officers at ECZ. I was further informed that most of ECZ workers were dubiously recruited which is why most of them were protesting when Justice Mumba insisted on an audit including their qualifications. There is more to this saga than meets the eye.
#46,Justice Mumba should come on the open and say exactly what happened in the meeting with Kunda. That would go a long way in helping to piece this whole thing.

Clear words from those to whom elections are not in their best interests, prepare the people for rigging theory when State House eludes you for the umpteenth time.
I said it at the beginning of this saga and pointed to Sata’s letter to RB which contained the above sentiments. Liars easily forget their words but expect their audience not to notice. Do you see that the message is para-phrased but exactly the same in meaning? There is a hidden hand in this, do you need any more confirmation?
If you need any more proof, just be patient, during the next few days make sure that you don’t miss the Post. Sata and his vuvuzela will leave you in no doubt at all……..
Some people are scheming to put pressure on HERB: if he goes ahead with 2011 elections, the elections will be “rigged”; if he postpones them, they have more time to reorganise their floundering campaign. But they have miscalculated yet again, RB is so resolute that he will not take the second alternative, he will do what he believes in no matter they say about rigging, after all he has invited international observators to witness the elections. But someone last time said the observers just came to drink whisky in Zambia, remember?
There is one thing that people are failing to understand about this saga. Neither Kalale nor Justice Mumba are liked by the Post or Sata. That makes the strategy easy, i.e. you have nothing to lose but everything to gain by playing one against the other. The casualty is immaterial too, one or both but in this case there are two casualties which is a bonus.

Sata, like Fatherless Bwalya is just a flip-flop. He says one thing about a person when all odds are against him(Sata) and say a complete opposite about that same person when it suits him. Sata is on record as having said that Mumba helped MMD rig elections in 2008 and called for her resignation then and so did Fatherless Bwalya. Even the 2006 elections, Sata and Bwalya said Justice Mumba with Kalale rigged elections in favour of LPM.
