Selection for Mporokoso candidate to commence next week – MMD

Share

The Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) will next week start the selection process of a candidate to field in the upcoming Mporokoso parliamentary by-election.

MMD acting National Secretary Chembe Nyangu said the ruling party will start interviewing the candidates on Tuesday, February 1 and would start with the Constituency Executive Committee.

Mr. Nyangu told ZANIS in an interview in Lusaka today that his office had so far received three applications from people who have shown interest in contesting the seat under the MMD ticket.

He named one of the three candidates as Dominic Musonda who is also Mporokoso District Commissioner and former Lunte constituency Member of Parliament who once served as Deputy Minister of Local Government.

He said there were several others who have shown interest but was quick to point out that he had not confirmed their names but were likely to be available for constituency interviews.

Mr. Nyangu disclosed that the party was expected to announce the names of the candidates two days before nominations on February 10, 2011.

He said procedure would be followed from constituency, district, provincial and the National Executive Committee (NEC) subcommittee which would now recommend the names to the main committee for final adoption.

Mr. Nyangu expressed confidence that the ruling party would retain the seat which was left vacant after the resignation of Mynard Misapa who joined the opposition Patriotic Front.

He said the MMD was confident of scooping the seat because it had received massive support from both its members and the people of Mporokoso.

Mr. Nyangu said MMD would conduct an issue based campaign and tell the people what it would do for them once re-elected.

He also urged the opposition political parties that would participate in the elections to conduct none-violent campaigns.

He said all participating political parties should be obliged to conduct issue based campaigns to sustain peace in the area.

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has set March 3 as the date for the Mporokoso Parliamentary by-election.

The Mporokoso seat fell vacant after the resignation of Mr Misapa from the MMD to join the opposition Patriotic Front.

  1. All elections in Zambia since mmd came to power have been disputed because they want to prolong their stay in power. We should fire everybody at ECZ and form an indedpendent electoral commission
    .1.The church mother bodies should call for an urgent meeting for all stake holders to spear head the formation of an independent commission no strings pulled by plot1 or rulling party
    .2.amend the electoral laws of the country.
    3. fire the chief justice and appoint judge mumba at least she is credible and has a backbone so as to restore the image of the judiciary.
    4.adopt the mungomba constitution. This crc has kunda written all over it.
    5. election date should be in constitution
    6.NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER -TO ROOT OUT EVIL
    with the above measures we will avoid another EGYPT,IVORY COAST &…

  2. Easy job for the PF, the candidate ‘created his own vacancy’, Misapa.

  3. #1 Ian Smith, what are you talking about; is there anything to compare between ECZ vs Egypt situation? If you don’t understand anything it is better to ASK than to give an opinion.

  4. Rural dwellers don’t understand issues.When given salt,chitenge and other things which some party always distribute,thats all. In urban areas where people are enlightened,corrupt parties dont win.

  5. All you guys that think dynamics are diffrent wait till people say we have had enough no state house will protect you.

  6. March 3rd – By elections;
    August 4th (4 months later) – parliasment disolved;
    September 3rd – General election campains comence;
    November 6th – General elections;

    Meanwhile there is no money to maintain the poor roads (or improve the poor road netwok in Lusaka), People are dying of hunger, civil servants get ‘peanuts’ for their services, no medicine in hospital etc etc
    I dont blame Alabeee nor his group for this nonsense, but the whole game of politics, which has beyond any reasonable doubt proved incapable of solving POOR people’s countless problems.

  7. @Ian: I like your thanking, if most of the youths in this country could think like u, we wouldn’t be in this mess. Young People have sold their birth right from mother Zambia for a pack if not a tin of Chibuku! Those method of keeping Youths drank was started by our slave masters and has been continued even after they have lift, the only way to get the youth to stand up and fight is to ban chibuku and tujilijili coz not most of them can afford to but mosi or castal beer. Their minds will be sober and they will realize that they have been taken for a ride. If we the few lucky one don’t stand up to help our brothers and sister to wisen up, then even us too will pay for not standing up through our future generation(s).
