The United Party for National Development (UPND) has intensified campaigns for party leader Hakainde Hichilema as presidential candidate in this year’s elections in a campaign strategy dubbed ‘HH 2011 Formula’.

Meanwhile, sources in UPND and pact partners, the Patriotic Front (PF) have hinted to the Times of Zambia that the two parties have spent millions of Kwacha to print campaign T-shirts and chitenge materials bearing portraits and symbols of the individual party leaders.

[pullquote]“Even if we are in the pact we still remain as individual parties until such a time that the pact candidate is chosen. There is nothing wrong with any of us campaigning,” he said.

UPND deputy spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa said in Lusaka yesterday that the opposition party had intensified its campaigns.

“In fact we are calling on all our supporters to go flat out and spread the good news of HH 2011. This is the year we have been waiting for, so we are intensifying our campaigns for Mr Hichilema,” he said.

Mr Mweetwa said there was nothing wrong with the UPND campaigning for Mr Hichilema because there was no pact candidate in place.

“Even if we are in the pact we still remain as individual parties until such a time that the pact candidate is chosen. There is nothing wrong with any of us campaigning,” he said.

Yesterday, the HH campaign team for 2011 was seen on Lusaka’s Cairo Road in a convoy of motor vehicles led by a Mitsubishi Pajero which had speakers mounted on it playing campaign jingles for the UPND leader.

Sources in UPND and PF confirmed that the two leaders had printed campaign materials.

The UPND source revealed that Mr Hichilema had since paid for the chitenge and T-shirts that were being printed in South Africa while the PF had some of their materials already printed and were being stocked at a house in Kabulonga in Lusaka.

The two parties that entered into a pact in June 2009 have failed to agree on, among other issues, a common economic and governance agenda for the country.

Last month, the UPND gave the PF a one-month ultimatum for the two parties to harmonise their manifestos with a view to come up with a common economic agenda but the PF has to date not responded.

The UPND has gone on to accuse the pact partners of being elusive and insincere.
Meanwhile, UPND youths on the Copperbelt have warned Zambians against voting for PF president Michael Sata and his members of Parliament (MPs) because they are allegedly violent.

UPND national youth spokesperson Ronald Manenga advised the electorate against voting for leaders such as Mr Sata and Roan Constituency MP Chishimba Kambwili because they had no respect for anyone.

Mr Manenga said in an interview in Kitwe that the PF leadership exhibited unacceptable behaviour and wondered how they could govern the country with such kind of behaviour.

He said he did not expect Mr Kambwili as an MP to use vulgar language against UPND members.

“We wonder what kind of government PF would be because all of them, starting from their leader to the MPs have vulgar language and beat up women.

“We will make sure Mr Sata does not go to State House because the PF behaviour is unacceptable,” he said.

Mr Manenga said the UPND on the Copperbelt would never support Mr Sata and his members, and accused them of resorting to insulting UPND members.

Efforts to get a comment from PF proved futile.

Last week, PF spokesperson Given Lubinda said he would not respond to queries from Times reporters.

  1. balekeni banajaila to come out third in every election. this guy is just a spoiler always dividing the opposition votes we don´t even know where he came from anaoneka che pamalilo ya Mazoka.

  2. That is the way to go. ZAMBIA 4WARD we are behind you. Sata has lost an opportunity to lead if only he could recognise and respect UPND. He will no never be president of Zambia. HH go we are behind you. Am told Prof Chirwa is bringing more campaing money…let have a real change!

  3. Zambia is still young we can not allow to be ruled by an under five, we need someone who knows the GRZ very well….we don´t want to make the same mistake we made in 1991 of electing the inexperience, we don´t people who never tasted cabinet positions, power will be too sweet for them.

  4. The so called pact is just on paper and not on the grassroot. HH has lost a great deal of time in trying to make the pact work. while HH is writing letters to PF, the PF is busy compagning no wonder they are calling HH an under five politician. However we wish HH good luck as he is the best presidential candidate as compared to Chibontaila Sata.

  5. SATA and Kambwili are illiterate. what do you expect from such leaders.John Phiri will be shocked and die of depression when his kaponya party looses. SAta will never be president for zambia .VIVA UPND

  6. HH has a democratic right to stand as anyone else.PF/Kaponyas have no right whatsoever to stifle anyone interested in leading the motherland. This is what we fought for in 1991, and we in the MMD the custodians of democracy, will make sure we alow everyone who meets the standards of leading this great nation do so without fear.

  7. the pact is being destroyed by upnd cadres who are busy attacking mr SATA, even on HH´s facebook page you will find massive attacks on SATA. And bafikalaaa you expect us to vote for your HH when he is chosen as a pact candidate which can not even happen!!!

  8. yes massive attacks from upnd cadres and they say they can not vote for sata even if he is chosen as the pact presidential candidate. you have taught us now we will also not vote for your under five!

  9. On “Meanwhile, UPND youths on the Copperbelt have warned Zambians against voting for PF president Michael Sata and his members of Parliament (MPs) because they are allegedly violent… national youth spokesperson Ronald Manenga advised the electorate against voting for leaders such as Mr Sata and Roan Constituency MP Chishimba Kambwili because they had no respect for anyone” this is very good and I hope these PF illiterates above including their illiterate cadres across the world will realise that the mighty UPND has Councillors and MPs in 7 provinces of Zambia except for Luapula and Northern since they reason is very well known while PF is a regional Bemba Kaponyas party with MPs and Councillors only in Lusaka, Copperbelt, Luapula and Northern provinces.

    Be blest all…

  10. Bakwetu mumwache mutoto. HH for 2011 go……………………………………………………………………………………………….time for under fives now

  11. Hallucinations as usual. UPND you are far from leading Zambia you know very well that you are confined to southern province and part of North Western Province. You want to ride on PF the way you did with UDA? We better go it alone if this is the case. I know we are giving chance to MMD to rule again but I can assure you that should PF miss this chance 2016 someone from PF will be in state house. If we play our cards well we might just as well get into plot 1 after the coming elections. Viva Sata.

  12. 15 Fide, hallucinations indeed, who from PF will enter state house in 2016? GBM? kekekekekekekekekekeke…….haa! walanjipaya ne nseko kekekekeke. PF is writing its Eulogy this year whether you like it or not.

  13. News item:

Mentality untrainable PF illiterates have continued showing perpetual signs of failure to learn anything except their Bemba Language even when the truth has been presented to them that UPND is present in 7 provinces out of the 9 Zambian provinces. Experts believe that PF cadres think that Bemba is the superior Language to any other on this earth and this mentality is what causes the PF illiterates to fail to learn anything new in heir lives. As a matter of fact, this PF syndrome is as a result of their PF unelected leader Michael Chilufya SATA who is known to have only attended formal education of 6 years only upto Standard 4 which is equivalently Grade 6 of our Zambia current education system in his entire life. Sata MC however claims to have 2 Bachelors degrees.
    _
    Matt…

  14. After yesterday’s MUVITV news release, I am now looking forward to witness a 2011 presidential elections contest between man of the moment Under5 HH of the UPND and Overfive Sata Michael Chilufya (who lost something) not only at PF-UPND PACT level but at National Presidential elections level slated for the end of the year 2011.

I will be glad is Mr Over5 Sata MC does not pull out of the presidential race so thay UPND’s HH embarrasses PF by pushing Sata to a distant 3 position in the elections outcome of this 2011 tripartite elections while HH forms GRZ Administration as President of Zambia or comes out number when he helps UPND to regain its 2001 elections position when Mr serpentine Sata MC of PF came out number 9 or so out of the 10 then presidential contestants.

    Be blest…

  15. My mates UPNDs let us just face reality that we cant and will never apeal to Zambian people. Just think of our behaviour guys….very uncivilized though we call ourselves as educated. We are always insulting Sata and PF just coz they have refused to give us the presidency. No mates this behaviour we are potraying is acient, it is just making PF and Sata look so clean in that its only UPND always insulting Sata and PF in the media.

Mates remember UDA, we took the presidency coz UPND was the largest party of the three, why cant we let PF also take the presidency coz it is larger? Mates , thats why people like me cant support UPND any more coz the party has becom the underfive party full of folly. I liked the party when Mazoka was a leader, it was full of maturity but this one KAYA.

  16. UPND wake up, the truth is HH is a very good, brilliant and inspiring leader but will never win on his own no matter what UPND will always come third. Swallow your pride and get back to reality before its too late.It doesnt matter whether HH is vice president or not at least you would have saved the million Zambian masses suffering than going into extinction after this years’ elections.

  17. Just when I read the Headline I even know which paper published the article. And judging from the comments from bloggers I can say they (Authors of article) are succeding in their objective. Its clear the objective is to break the pact. Cause as much confusion and mistrust in the pact and it shall break.

  18. Really the behaviour of UPND has a smake of desperation. Where on earth would a larger party give the presidency to a smaller party? I dont know may be in the world to come. This is not debatable mates, its straight forward that PF will not give the presidency to UPND just as MMD will not give too.

The earlier UPND stopped dreaming the better.

  19. Quit with the PHD people. besides, Abraham Lincoln is a good story we can all relate to when it comes to HH come 2012…all these words shall be swallowed.

Zambians are looking for meaningful change that is reflected in the policies. And may i remind you that all the parties except UPND have little to write home about in terms of the forward looking policies and strategies for a better Zambia..

  20. #24 we should move away from the mentality of looking at parties and start looking at candidates. As for me I would vote for HH over Sata even at gunpoint. We need young focused leaders to run for office. We have tried recycling leaders and have seen that its not working. Do we surely have such long lives to continue on the same path? This is no time for rhetoric but action…not time for playing to the gallery. For me Sata has been changing goal posts on important issues so many times to trust him anymore. I can bet you a million bucks if Sata was to assume power, the democracy we enjoy today will be reduced. Don’t forget he only left MMD because he was dribbled by Chiluba and not that he differed with them on Manifestoes or lack of service delivery to the people.

  21. 26 Hantoboolo. Bang your head against the wall before you read this (maybe it will sink)….. UDA had a common National Agenda. The only agenda for PF is ‘donchi kubeba’. And in your prime state of mind you want us to risk our future on such hooliganism? What good will another old man do? its like you giving me a new fifty pin when i ask for change for an old fifty pin. we want REAL CHANGE with 5 pins and ten pins if you like.

  22. #26 you are right,Sata also used the corruption fight by Late Mwanawasa against Chiluba regime as a fight against Bembas to win the votes.IS THAT NOT GRAND TRIBALISM AND DECEIT ZAMBIANS? Again when it suited SATA he cheated SAKWIBA SIKOTA that they will fight corruption but SATA later changed to sympathise for Chiluba for TRIBAL VOTES not SOCIAL AND ECONOMICAL Programme for us Zambians.

  23. VIVA HAKAINDE HICHILEMA….YOU ARE THE RIGHT YOUNG LEADER TO RUN THE NATIONAL AFFAIRS SOCIALLY AND ECONOMICALLY,,YOU KNOW IN 2006 AND 2008 ALL OF WELL MEANING ZAMBIANS DID SAY THAT YOU BE SERIOUSLLY CONSIDERED FOR PLOT ONE,,,CORRECT TIME HAS COME ,,,AND WE ARE GEARED THIS TIME AROUND TO VOTE FO YOU AS REPUBLICAN PRESIDENT

  24. My advice is for the PF to leave these chaps…they cant be attacking a PACT partner like this instead of attacking rupi…..PF is stonger than mmd and upnd combined VIVA pabwatooooooooooooooooooo

  25. All i can say is that Zambia is ready for real change. Good lucky HH/UPND. those who think they are big based on Vuvuzela front page censored photos will cry. ask yourselves questions. why don’t this vuvuzela paper show UPND/ MMD campaigning photos? i was in Solwezi the other day. HH had one of the biggest rallies ever seen but no paper published it. we are watching

  26. Would really love to have the learned and brilliant HH in government even az prezident one day. But am afraid thoze calling Sata namez are making it almost impossible for HH to ever get anywhere near the corridorz of power. If UPND think HH can win an election even if he were to stand alone against RB, then they are fishing on very dry land.

  27. Ask alaabee when he was campaigning for the presidential bye election of 2008 he said he wanted to finish Mwanawasa’s term and then those who wanted HH were told that his time was to be 2011.I personally has not forgotten so this being 2011 HH leads

  28. With this current level of fear and lack of confidence in our young people, We could still have been sold as slaves to this day. The problem is that youths in zambia take too long to take responsibility in life and make firm choices. this is why the avarage youth in Zambia still lives with his mom at 30. No wonder the youths look to their grandfathers for government leadership up to now. Young people get up be counted this is your moment to prove your existence. stop cyring for popcorn and start running and building this nation. You can do it, the old folks have run their race take the Horses now!!

  29. ZEDIANS what else do you want other than what HH is offering? The man has offered minimum wage K3Million for public servants and more employment for our jigantic number of loffers. what else do you want. The problem with zedians is that the only language most guys understand better are insults. Lack of education for most voters will kill this country.

  30. Mr. John Phiri you are a Rbish fellow and you are not the only zambian. Leave the people to choose who they want. Why are you so judgement and everyday you are among the first ten to attack any article on UPND. wanya chinyau we are watching and we know u and a refugee WB.

  31. H.H and UPND are the only people who can take Zambia forward.

Sata has wasted the people’s time with his ignorance and MMD are just plain corrupt.
H.H with Clive Chirwa as Vice will be the team after the 2011 elections.

2008 – Sata was the real winner.
    2011 – H.H will be the winner.

  32. You see the problem with UPND. While we are talking about unifying the two parties so that voters from the two parties can vote for one leader, you bloggers are busy insulting Sata who has alot of voters behind him.How are you going to attract those voters like me to change my mind? by insulting Sata? No? This is why we say the only reason most of you support HH is becoz you hail from South together. If you want PF members to support your HH, then atleasst have some respect for Mr Sata.Otherwise you are fighting a loosing battle.

  33. No pact no vote.A sheer waste of time being on a voting line when the results are already predetermined.Pact is the only method of removing our nation from the deprivity of poverty and ignorance. If HH and Sata have failed to agree on this, the best is to pave way for a neutral leader to take over while them should just be spectactors. It is very obnoxious and mind boggling to see leaders failing to agree on a simple thing like pact.If they do not know RB has become a perfidious leader who will not listen to anyone.May be as Zambians,we should use Egyptian or Tunisian way of removing sturbon leaders. We are sick and tired of cosmetic development that does not benefit poor people.HH and Sata should know that it will take a crane or a bulldozer to remove RB from state house.

  34. Proud to be a Zambian. Ours is a dynamic country favored and protected by God who has cursed the tower of babel to fall and so it has.Nothing good can come out of hatred, regionalism, insults and lies for these are not only abominations but reproach to society. We said it at conception of this unholy PF-UPND marriage of convenience consumated in hell was doomed. That landed us insults from the ignoramuses.

  35. Taking views of bloggers on this blog as an opinion poll on whether HH or Sata should rule, the outcome favours HH. Out of 40 blogs counted, 24 are in favour of HH, 10 are for Sata and 6 neutral representing 60%, 25% and 15 percent respecively. If this represents the true picture on the ground, then HH should face RB in the elections while Sata would do well to bach one of the two.

  36. If this represents the true picture on the ground, then HH should face RB in the elections while Sata would do well to back one of the two prefered candates.

  37. In posting the two comments above, am aware that factors such as illiteracy on the part of most PF backers and therefore their poor reading culture may have contibuted to HH getting the majority. The majority of them are simply not on this blog. If the opinion poll were to be taken from among marketeers, there is no doubt that Sata would win the poll outrightly.

  38. Am realiably informed that elections will be held in September, 2011 or earlier. The new constitution indicates the first Thursday of September. However, in the final analysis, its up to RB to decide.

  39. hahah..sure UPND conrinue living in the f00l’s paradize. HH will ever win southern province . He will never go beyond that, just see the uncivilized minds of the UPNDs, to them insulting Sata is equivalent to wining elections. No dears, have respect for sata bane. You are now looking so f00lish in the eyes of Zambians.

Thats why your party is called an underfive party coz you lack maturity.

hata sata or deny him, the truth remains that Sata commands a very bigger proprtion of support than HH. always HH has been N0 3 and so it shall be in this year’s elections, HH underfive will be N0 3.

Its ok for UPND to soothe themselves but it has no effect on the facts obtaining on the ground. The fight to plot 1 is between Sata and RB period.

  40. Tribalist i think that you are right to a certain degree, but am also sure that this refflects the thinking of most zambians i meet in the streets. if this is anything to go by then its really great but people like Maetro need to man up and stop uising that tribe crap and focus on issues. this is a national party with everyone in there. so peopel should not bring their tribal frutrations here…. malabishi.

  41. Himonde,
You do not represent Zambia to start with. secondly the Zambians you are talking about are here blogging and campaingin in their neibourhoods. So face reality my man

  42. Jon phiri,
cant believe the season is changing. He spends so much time doing PHD on UPND…. Zebige, just accept the people know in thier hearts who the real deal is.

  43. Ha ha!! We need the REAL PACT. Can UPND and ADD FORM THE REAL PACT. And let it be assured Southern. Western, North-western, Central and Lusaka rural will go the REAL PACT with HH at the top and Milupi as vice. Sata will only carry Copperbelt urban, Lusaka urban and southern part of Northern province only meanwhile RB gets only Eastern, Luapula and parts of Northern province. A re run will make UPND/ADD and MMD form the final pact. This will nail SATA to the ground never to rise again.

  44. RB and Sata’s campaign appears to be in full gear in the meantime some people are trying to mislead UPND that they can perform wonders! RB and Sata is covered by almost all the media channels some in the negative while some are in the positive but publicity is the key! Presidency will not come on a silver plate….

  45. we shall see this is 2011, the same things you ( upnd) are saying is what you were saying in 2006 and 2008. if you are educated as you claim stop misleading your HH coz its very clear this years election battle is between SATA and RB. i hope you won´t use the same language in 2016 you jokers!

  46. This makes it certain that MMD is winning again. Of course the opposition will as usual cry foul that their votes have been stolen. PF & Sata are saying bye to the ‘southern’ votes which they disparately wanted. HH should obviously have seen this coming, he was warned several times, it’s too late now. VIVA MMD.

  47. john phiri its you who is a joker. sata is no match for HH and RB. the real contest is between MMD and UPND. chi sata will remain with useless bemba’s like you with no education and no voters cards. all you do is spend time at KMB and Lusaka intercity forgetting that to win an election people must actually vote. most voters are women, students and rural dwellers and all these people do not like sata at all because they can see he is danger to society. HH will lay a foundation in 2011 by beating sata into third position so that come 2016 he will be the last man standing as RB cannot go for second term and chi sata will be 20feet under. hahha pact is dead finished and thats ba sata looks lost. even chiefs are refusing to meet him in luapula and the post are trying to get away from him

  48. N# 1 n 2..
    who is going somewhere? SATA???))))))
We will see if SATA can win with 2 provinces. the man will die as an Opposition. We are making sure that he doesn’t reach anywhere near the corridors of power. Alikwata nk’ongole sana mambala

  49. @59 John Phiri. the battle between Sata and RB well, this is what the PF Vuvuzela has managed to mislead people like you through those artificial crowds they put on the front page. Zambia is huge my friend. where as HH is busy campaigning on the ground, Sata is busy making news for mmembe. dynamics on the ground have drastically changed. come 2011, Sata will be licking wounds. people need real change based on economic and social development not mere political pronouncement of more money in the pocket without explaining how.

  50. #61 thats the problem with you chaps you think you are the only ones are educated, ok fine leave alone with our KMB.
#62 which 2 provinces? get your facts right.

  51. THE EDUCATED THAT CAN NOT EVEN CONVINCE THE UNEDUCATED MASSES TO VOTE FOR THEM. BY THE WAY LEAVE BEMBAS OUT OF THIS ITS JUST SHOWS HOW SHALLOW MINDED YOU ARE COZ I AM NOT BEMBA THOUGH I LIKE THEM BEMBA COZ THEY ARE VERY SHARP AND I WILL MARRY ONE.

  52. #61 YOUR HH WILL NOT BE A FACTOR IN 2016 WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT. WE WILL HAVE NEW PEOPLE LIKE MILUPI, CHIPIMO AND MUTATI E.T.C (HE SHOULD ALSO GIVE CHANCE TO OTHERS IN UPND TO LEAD THAT PARTY.OK?)

  53. no 66 thats true but at least sata will be finished completely this year. and why refuse that you are not bemba when you are bemba. yes we have had two educated presidents since FTJ and they have been able to convince the real zambians to vote for them. RB and Levy both had degrees while your kaponya president the perpetual loser is too shallow in his thinking to win an election for president. so at least you have admitted that there are better candidates for the future like chipimo, mutati and milupi. what about Pf after sata, do they have anybody?? because all i see are thugs in PF both male and female, always fighting. so ba john so lye uwali phiri aka chanda beu, your man sata is finished without pact and now he is begging others to join him, ekupwa ba sata. he is alone now

  54. at least in 2016 HH will still be alive and well and can still play a role to support whoever takes over UPND in 2016. the most important thing is to make sure that buffoon called sata does not reach even near state house gate. the cobras head must be cut off this year for good and never to rear its head again. its time for the youth of zambia to lead. even RB will not stay the whole five years. he just wants to make sure sata is finished this year so that come 2016 it will be free for all and by then most of these old men would have retired and a new generation can compete on issues and not insults. what a shame the way sata behaves, nothing good comes from his mouth, nothing at all.

  55. Imwe ba opposition mwayambako. you are digracing from the real issue here why so simunvela. MMD is aged party they have outlived their usefuless and you UPNDs stat acting smart stop all this nonsese and work towards removing MMD not ivo vamene mwayamba! I watched this space last election when one blogger kept on advising the opposition to work together and no one listened and end result opposition lost and now iwe maestro he he he wayambako futi. my sympathies Learn from past mistakes the pact youths should stop fighting each other and get on board and campaign positively; atase1 you make me cringe with anger;Sata & HH are very much into this Pact coz they know what the doin;imwe vimafuzi are not helping you are letting your enemy dance because of your ignorance. You never seize to amaze

  56. viva HH ..UPND has the best candidate ..deep down your hearts even you die hard tribalists know it..you want to vote for a snake coz of tirbe and yet he’s from Taznzania ..do you know anyone who was his classmate?

  57. HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
