HH attributes drop in life expectancy to poverty

Share

United Party for National Development (UPND) president Hakainde Hichilema says the quality of life has worsened as it can be evidenced by the drop in the life expectancy.

Mr. Hichilema says political change that will improve the living standards is inevitable because the current government has failed to deliver development to the Zambians.

He added that high unemployment levels as well as poor sanitation services are some of the many indicators that the current government needs to be relived of its duties.

Mr. Hichilema has also advised the electorates to vote for leaders that will deliver development to improve the quality of life for the Zambians.

The opposition leader was speaking in an exclusive interview with QFM news.

  1. The human development indicators are worsening and yet the economy is growing. And the party in government wonders why people are not seeing this developments. BTW, what is the current life expectancy for a Zambian born today?

  2. @ #1 splaka

Please stop spreading lies. The Human Development Index is easily accessible and there you can see for yourself that it is actually improving and not worsening. Stop lying to try and gain political points. That is the worst form of politics.

  3. Life expectancy in Zambia is now 38.4 yrs and we are the third lowest in the world.Poverty levels are worsening on the ground but on MMD papers it is improving because they are counting on the money which is shipped to the countries of origin of the so called investers. Just take a walk to compounds or villages you will have the facts right. So HH is 100% right.

  4. The cost of living for a family of six is over 2million kwacha, but you have a govt which sets k419,000 as minimum wage. This is crazy because income percapita is lower than k419,000 and how can you become middle income country with such a govt which is not concerned about poverty reduction among the workers? Govt change is inavitable for meaningful economic development to take place.

  5. Too much disease, healthcare is deplorable to say te least, maybee even nonexistent. Widespread poverty. Govt officials are disconnected from society. This is how civil unrest starts. One day someone will get tired of voting and start shooting. Then you will have another congo or angola. I personally dont give a f.u.c.k cause im out of africa .

  6. On “Mr. Hichilema says political change that will improve the living standards is inevitable because the current government has failed to deliver development to the Zambians… added that high unemployment levels as well as poor sanitation services are some of the many indicators that the current government needs to be relived of its duties… also advised the electorates to vote for leaders that will deliver development to improve the quality of life for the Zambians” Mr UPND 2011 presidential candidate has said the right things. I wish MMD will look at the sanitation problem within our compounds and townships.

According to 3 Academic Worrior above, life expectancy in Zambia is at 38. 4 yr old from its previous value 42 yr which entails voting 4 younger leader, HH…

  7. … (the elected president of UPND since 2006) is better than voting for RB of the MMD who is 74 yr old — and about twice the Zambian current life expectancy age of 38.4 yr.

I therefore ask Zambian voters to make sure that this 2011 year’s presidential election is between younger HH who is about 52 yr old and MMD’s RB Banda who is 74 years old while jokers like Mr PF serpentine Sata MC, who is corrupt more the word corruption itself according to Chiluba FJT (the former boss of Sata MC), must not be allowed to be Zambian President at all costs in light of Chiluba FJT’s advice this year and action of frustrating Sata MC in 2001 when Chiluba FJT hand-picked and appointed late President LP Mwanawasa as Zambian President following Chliuba’s revelation yesterday.

    Be blest.

  8. HH is a bit behind o the data. Here are the correct latest figures from the CIA World Factbook
Zambia – Life expectancy at birth
    total population: 52.03 years
country comparison to the world: 209
    male: 50.81 years
    female: 53.28 years (2010 est.)
Academic Warrior @ 3 – Looks like you haven’t touched your books for a while

  9. Contrast the above information with our neighbors whose figures read as follows:
Zimbabwe – Life expectancy at birth
    total population: 47.55 years
country comparison to the world: 219
    male: 47.98 years
    female: 47.11 years (2010 est.)

  10. ba HH, its common knowledge that life expectancy and poverty are kinded, dah!

  11. excuse my typo in comment 10, linked, not kinded.

Maestro , your reasoning is folly. Cozmo Mumba and Elias Chipimo jnr are both younger than HH. So based on your reasoning of age. Dont vote for Sata/RB because they are older than HH. Therefore dont vote for HH because he is older than Cozmo. very funny Cozmo should be our next president.

  12. Economical growth from where? People dont eat figures or human development index no, people want food on their tables not just on paper. HH is very right its time we woke up and faced reality or else we may be cheating ourselves that Zambia is doing well when infact people are dying.
