LAZ condemns police conduct in Mazabuka

Share

The Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) has condemned the conduct of the police officers in the Mazabuka incident that occurred on Tuesday this week.

The Human Rights Committee of the law association of Zambia says that reported use of teargas canister in a public place where patrons were watching a soccer match on television is reckless, unjustifiable, and clearly criminal.

Governor of the Committee Bob Mwelwa Musenga says that the continued use of live ammunition on unarmed members of the public is a sad development.

Mr. Musenga has since called on the political leadership to condemn the continued loss of lives at the hands of the police service whose constitutional mandate is to protect lives of the people.

He says the right to life is the cornerstone of the bill of rights and the violation of this right with impunity is at the variance with the Association’s position as a democratic state that respects the rule of law.

Mr. Musenga has since reminded the police that they are not above the law and are equally subject to the same laws as other citizens.

He regret that two more lives were lost at the hands of the police barely 24 hours after the issuance of a statement by the minister of home affairs in parliament.

He has further urged government to immediately take corrective measures and ensure that the police operate within the law so as to restore the confidence of the public and international community.

  1. What a lame statement from LAZ. I was expecting these fat lawyers to tell the police to compansate the innocent victims for the lives lost through the State having allowed substandard training of these cops in their training camp, and for allowing mental invalids to be their officers whose mental setup is for quick Western-type pulling of triggers the way Red Indians were being mowed down into submission to give up their land and move onto reservations where all types of ailments awaited them. Shame on LAZ.

  2. LAZ and the Human rights commission have all failed the people. They need to clearly show the victims as well as the public how to hold government to account, mere statements are not going far enough.

  3. In Egypt, when the protests started, people torched police stations. This shows how government is misusing the Police Service as a means to oppress its own people. If there is any corrutpt wing in government, its the Zambia Police Service. I can forsee a time when these officers will run and renounce there jobs when Zambians rise up against these indescriminate murders. Viva Egypt style protests.

  4. Kabonde and Lungu should as a start resign. Of course Kunda can’t go because he says he works well with RB so his turn will come after the elections. As I said earlier the police NEED thorough transformation. They think they are a special breed above every other citizen. One has just to visit a police station to witness how they brutalise and humiliate people. Those weapons should be taken from them and only specialist units like Anti Robbery should bear arms.

  5. Ppreciate all the comments so far. the worst bloggers are those who comment on political news. Its a pity that we have dull politicians coupled with dull voters.

As usual, too little too late from LAZ.

  6. LAZ is a weak link in the country’s judicial system. They sit by and let criminals have the upper hand. Good for nothing for their ridiculous robes and powdered wigs.

  7. I concur with the sentiments of the other bloggers and also with to condemn this useless LAZ for their silence and failure to comment on George Kunda’s dangerous statement that the police are being professional by murdering innocent people. LAZ are just a bunch of MMD bootlickers.

  8. The police are being mislead by Gorge Kunda who justfied the Mongu killing saga. That’s why they have now gone on rampage killing innocent people. Kunda and Rupiah should have condemned their rabid dogs(police) in the Mongu saga,on the contrary they praised them that killing is being professional.

  9. Rupiah and NAPSA boss(Phiri) corrupt land deal exposed. Kekeke. The Post News Paper.Kekeke.The Paper That Digs Deeper. Come 2011.
