The Patriotic Front (PF) has welcomed the announcement by the United Party for National Development to pullout of the political alliance.
This follows the official announcement by UPND Vice President Richard Kapita in Lusaka today that his party will no longer be in a pact with the PF citing differences.
PF Secretary General Secretary Wynter Kabimba said today that the UPND has a democratic right to decide on what step to take with regards the pact.
Mr. Kabimba said the decision by the UPND will not deter his party from focusing on the forthcoming tripartite elections.
Meanwhile, the Anti Voter Apathy Project (AVAP) described as unfortunate that the UPND/PF pact has failed to work after creating so much hope and confidence in Zambians.
AVAP Executive Director Bonnie Tembo said people are disappointed at the development as they had so much hope in the pact.
Mr. Tembo added that the two parties should also realize that they have wasted so much time issuing negative statement on each other as elections draw near.
He said that the move showed that the culture of political alliances is not welcome in Zambia and further called on voters not to shun this year’s polls.
The UPND/PF pact that was launched in June 2009 as a creation of Zambians has in recent past been characterized by wrangles leading to the pullout of the UPND.

Politics is such a deceit game and a lot of people don’t understand the fact that what makes politics work is the constitution and the people, without these two politics would be a mafias game.
The PACT these guys where trying to hash has never worked anywhere and can never work anywhere in the world, even in the UK or US. it can’t work because of just the nature of politics where trust can only be anchored by the constitution and the people’s power to intervene through the ballot

From #5 ..In Zambia, the constitution does not make provision for a PACT government because there is no legislative piece that would act as a whip to keep the two parties in the alliance. After winning election , Sata or HH can simply throw away what they agreed and his government would continue to function properly without any consequences at all. So this PACT would have required God like trust, but as I said Politics and Trust can never happen in the same sentence without adding consequences for breaking the trust.
Coalitions in UK and the rest of Europe work because if the other party pulls out, the govt would collapse and fresh elections would have to be called. These are the consequences that make PACTS elsewhere work

The PACT had serious positives and negatives. Firstly all political parties must be defferent in idiology and based on this its imposible to put two parties whose foundation is totaly defferent from the onset. I believe I would join a political party after understanding what its idiologies are, therefore it would be folly for anyone to think that the defunct PACT was here to stay. Otherwise such an arangement would only work were one party concede to the other to contest election without it paticipating through fielding parliamentary candidates but to alow one chosen party to field all candidates. But fellow Zambians MMD has lost direction and they need a rest!
Zambians why are you crying? The pact is not an answer .It was going to create more problems. It’s up to the people of Zambia to decide who will form Govt.If I may ask, do think HH would have accepted to serve under ba Sata or verse versa? The answer is no. Personally I don’t support the pact. I strongly believe that Sata is the right man to deal with really issues like corruption, unemployment and poor infrastructure.

Well, going by the numerous comments predicting the end of the pact on this site, one can safely conclude that the writing had been on the wall long enough. Whether we did not read it or chose to ignore it, or both, I cannot tell.
However, what is appeasing is that the coalition ended just as peacifully as it begun. The Germans would say: “Lieber ein Ende mit Schmerzen als Schmerzen ohne Ende.” meaning “Better an end with pain than pain without end.”

The aspirations of Zambians to have a government that will change the status quo of corruption and making sure Chiluba goes back to court to face charges of corruption has been dashed due to the greediness of UPND and PF! We were told their priority when in government was to save the Zambian people. But it has become apparent that all they’re interested in is to become Presidents, have ministerial posts and loot the country’s finances. the paxt failure is a demonstration of many zambians way of looking at things . the hope was not in putting the pact in govt as an end in itself . Ati UPND is like buttocks they will never get in front!I appreciate the observation made chief bootliker that the current set of laws do not have provisions for PACT..this is true but Pacts are not created in order to change the provisions of the laws ,pacts are form of electoral package in which more than one political party agree to work together while parties remain independent,so now what comes next is that in run up to the elections Political parties have to make certain agreements how they intend to proceed before and after elections,before elections the parties involve will either resolve to dissolve parties involved then come up with a come NAME then go for elections to choose who will represent that New Political party or a candidate maybe chosen by looking at electrol previous…

The point is people want change because people can not see improvement in their basic needs i.e food,water, shelter, health care the list goes on. I would mind if we had the right people doing the right thing for the people. Whether Nada,FDD,MMD name them they must just have the heart to reduce poverty for the benefit of everyone. Politics will always be there but are the people going to eat politics? No. Surely selfish interests have killed the pact but there is still hope when the 50%+1 clause is included in the constitution and that is if MMD is serious about a majority President. As Zambians we must focus on development rather than which party is in power. Just remember that we are all Zambians breathing the same air and sharing the same colour of blood.

Mr Kapita said the PF has called the UPND a small tribal party and made other remarks which the latter described as ‘unsavoury’.
He said recently, PF president Michael Sata wrote a letter in which he said his party will have nothing to do with the UPND because national youth chairperson for the UPND Joe Kalusa has insulted him.
“Then there is a letter from PF secretary general Wynter Kabimba in which he stated among other things that the UPND, its president Hakainde Hichilema and people from Southern Province use their tribe to think and not their brains.
It is because of this and many other reasons that we have decided to withdraw from the alliance we had with the PF,” Mr Kapita said.

I keep wondering what the basis is for people predicting an easy RB victory on this blog. In 2008, the results were as follows: RB (718,359), MCS (683,150), and HH (353,018). The margin of victory for RB against MCS was therefore only 35,209. I was just examining the November 2010 ECZ figures of newly registered voters. These show that there are 205,906 newly registered voters on the Copperbelt, 161,565 in Lusaka, 81,878 in Luapula, and 158,500 in Northern Province. These new voters in these PF strongholds are more likely to be PF than MMD supporters. Are these numbers not enough to wipe out the 35,209 margin of victory RB had in 2008. So how does RB get an easy victory this year?
On “PF Secretary General Secretary Wynter Kabimba said today that the UPND has a democratic right to decide on what step to take with regards the pact… Kabimba said the decision by the UPND will not deter his party from focusing on the forthcoming tripartite elections” this is a better message from PF’s appointed-by-Sata Secretary General.
I hope PF/serpent Sata MC will also be civil in his approach to the mighty UPND’s pull out from the PF-UPND PACT.

The recent voters registration could still tilt things in favour of the PF looking at the demographics of the registration. I for one am 101% grateful to the UPND for not handing over the Nation to PF; I salute them.Even as I support RB, for I think he is on the right track, I guess our task also as cyber advocates is to still propagate for better implementation of policies and having a better constitution for the sake of our our children and theirs. I hope we will not go back to the time of Chiluba where tribalism in government appointments was the order of the day, imagine at one time there was Chiluba(President), Nevers Mumba (vice-President), Sata(number 3 in rank) as minister without port folio, Finance Katele Kalumba, Mines Kaunda Lembalemba etc. Only those ministries which were not important were given to other tribes. No non-Bemba was given any crucial ministry, no wonder Sata keeps mentioning the word tribalism because he practiced it a lot with his minions, as they say what you accuse others of is what you are.
