United Party for National Development UPND has officially announced that it has broken away from the electoral PACT with the Patriotic Front PF.
And UPND vice president Richard Kapita has expressed confidence that the UPND will emerge victorious in the forthcoming elections.
Announcing the party’s decision to breakaway from the Pact during a press briefing in Lusaka today, UPND vice president Richard Kapita accused PF president Michael Sata of being disrespectful towards the UPND.
He said the PF leader has made numerous unwarranted statements towards the UPND, resulting in the party resolving to breakaway from the Pact.
Mr. Kapita said despite some members of the PF being for the idea of the PACT, Mr. Sata has always shown that he is not interested to work with the UPND.
He added that the decision by the PF to field candidates in all the 150 constituencies in the forthcoming general election marked the end of the PF/UPND pact.
He has since invited some members of the Patriot Front to join the UNPD because it is the most progressive party.
Mr. Kapita has further said that now that the PF/UPND pact is no more, the UPND will now concentrate on organizing and mobilizing itself in preparation for this year’s election.
He said the party has already made headways in selling its presidential candidate Hakainde Hichilema.
Mr.Kapita said the UNPD has been received well by most Zambians from the campaign trips the party has been making.

This is a wrong move on the part of UPND. If the voting pattern in this year’s elections remains the same as that of 2008, the Sata is winning, Why? 1. PF has made in-roads to some rural areas where it was weakest; 2. Western Province is a no-go area for MMD and UPND has factored in this fact in arriving at the decision to pull out of the PACT. Votes will be shares by Milupi and HH which may end up benefitting Sata. Remember the 30000+ votes that defeated Sata in 2008 came from this province. If PF can maintain the momentum in Copperbelt, Lusaka, Luapula and Northern provinces while can manage to get substantail votes in other provinces, I do not see HH or RB winning. So, unless things have significantly change between 2008 and now, which I doubt (I was in Zambia for 2 months Nov-Dec)

The pact was good for UPND because it would have removed the tribal tag UPND carries. But after PF supported them in chilanga, and they won (remember PF helped you in Solwezi, Chilanga and Mfubwe). 4. Revealing confidential document to the press without exhausting its contents

There is one fundamental problem that UPND cohorts created during the time HH ascended to presidency. The late Mazoka (MHSRIP) had two vice presidents: a Lozi and a Bemba. By and large when the president steps aside (by resignation, death, etc), you would expect one of the vice president to step in. This expectation was more so for UPND considering that there were 2 VEEPs. However, this was not the case in UPND. More so both VEEPs were kicked out. Those pipo who campaigned for HH (especially Madyenkuku) made it very clear that only Tonga can be president of UPND. This was the worst form of campaign I have ever heard in the last 40yrs. Worse still the current leadership in UPND has failed to attract big names from large tribes like Bemba (43%) due to lack of proper leadership.

I vividly recall HH’s advice to women at the last rally PF and UPND held in Lsk near the Mosque situated along Burma Rd. ii. I gave you the correct figure of $4billion as average annual tax that the Chilean government collects from its mining industry instead of the $40billion that you claimed. And I quoted my source on the internet for everybody to verify. In your response instead of accepting your error magnanimously, you simply brushed it aside claiming that “maybe it was revenue not tax” and yet you wanted Zambians to believe your wrong figures by pretending to be an authority on a matter that you have no verifiable facts. Now revenue and tax are two very different things.
iii. You even stated that Chile’s copper mining industry is owned by the state through Codelco. At worst that is a lie and at best confirms that you are ignorant and out to deceive the innocent people of Zambia. Let me correct you again with additional information for your benefit and that of innocent bloggers. My source is World Copper Factbook 2010, what is yours?

1. It is NOT true that the copper industry in Chile is state owned. The TRUTH is that the private sector accounts for at least 66% of Chilean copper production and the state through Codelco account for the rest.
2. The single largest copper mine produces 1.3million tons of copper and is owned by a private consortium of BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto & Japan Escondida. Other large private players (200,000tons and above) include Anglo American etc.
3. Chile produces 5.4million tons of copper annually against Zambia’s 700,000 so the tax revenues are necessarily much higher.
4. Chile boasts of one of the most progressive and competitive mining tax regimes in the industry. This has attracted massive private investments which has led it to build its copper industry to the status of…

This is what a good futuristic tax regime brings to an economy, remember copper prices go through cycles but on average there are more good times than bad times so we should not be short sighted in our planning. As your example Chile has shown us, it is very important to nurture industry if you want to reap long term, sustainable benefits.

HH Sata , i can see you are knowlegeable about copper industry, but you might be lacking when it comes to the real issue. The issue at hand is how revenue from the mines is handled and how the human resource is also handled. Zambian mining sector can contribute more to the treasury both directly and indirectly by support systems such as local suppliers, indigenous employees etc. in Chile i can bet you the CSI policies of these mining companies is by far better than ours here. In Chile they have COLDELCO in Zambia we dont have anything that Zambians can say holds their wealth. Zambia is a unique case and any comparisons with any other country is a mistake. we are different

It is my honest opinion that President Banda does not have a vision for the country, Mwanawasa was also just woken up to come and be President but he proved his capability on standing firm on what he believed was good for the nation and exposed the plunderers. As for President Banda he feels inadequate and has chosen to band with people Mwanawasa had distanced himself from, he has brought former President Chiluba and company.
So I think that the mere fact that President Banda lacks self confidence and feels he needs ‘king makers’ does not inspire me at all. He is totally not fit to be President that’s why up to now he has failed to make a distinct mark on the people. A person in the opposition by the name of Mr Michael Chilufya Sata easily pulls a willing crowd without government machinery to attend his rallies. It means therefore that people are more inspired by Mr Sata and willing to spend their money to hear him. And it is for very good reasons since he has proved himself as a man that delivers results. It’s on this basis and for the sake of addressing the poverty that has made us destitute, that I would encourage as many as are willing to give Mr Sata the vote in 2011.

Sata’s popularity has tremendously reduced take it or leave it, he is losing this time around. Frankly speaking, the PACT was our hope to dislodge MMD from power. I am UPND supporter and was happy to see it working with PF and Sata for the love of our country but to say the truth, if these two parties go it alone as they have declared, neither Sata nor HH can win these elections. Only A FOOL would think Sata or HH can make it on their own. We have had lessons but amashilu tabasambimlila you just complain of rigging. Please look at the margins that MMD loses with to the opposition and also look at the margins that MMD wins with. For example, PF was celebrating Mporokoso win with only less then 500 votes difference but had it been MMD beating them it would have been a thousand plus.
