President Rupiah Banda has condemned and apologized for the violence between the opposition Patriotic Front (PF) and MMD cadres yesterday in Lusaka.
The two parties fought violent battles on the sidelines of a PF Lusaka Provincial conference at Garden House hotel.
President Banda has said it is sad that both the MMD and PF failed to co-exist in the area surrounding the Garden House Hotel.
“I am very sorry about that. I asked one of my colleagues who knew something about it. It is not justified, but I just want to say I am sorry. We don’t want this kind of thing,” he said.
Mr Banda said political party cadres should learn to co-exit and avoid all forms of confrontation.
The President said he understands that PF youths went to pull out a flag from a grocery shop run by one of the MMD members, a situation that infuriated the shop owner and other MMD cadres who later fought back at PF supporters.
“Why can’t we live side by side? They can put a PF flag here, MMD there, UPND there. I am sorry about that, and I condemn it,” he said.
Mr Banda has since called on the church to pray for the forthcoming general elections, just like it has always done in the past.

The President said this at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Lusaka during the installation of Reverend Albert Chama, as Anglican Archbishop of central Africa. With his installation, Archbishop Chama will now oversee Zambia, Botswana, Malawi and Zimbabwe.
Hundreds of Anglican Church members, their leaders and government officials attended the installation ceremony.
Meanwhile, at least 5 people have been arrested in connection with yesterday’s violence between Patriotic Front (PF) and MMD cadres.
Yesterday, PF and MMD cadres engaged in a violent fight on the sidelines of the opposition party’s Lusaka Provincial conference at garden house hotel.
Police service spokesperson, Ndandula Siamana has confirmed the arrest of the five people.
Ms Siamana has further said the police have instituted a probe in he matter, which will include other subsidiary issues.

This William was in charge of the vigilantees in UNIP govt which RB belonged to. He was the most brutal and bloody thirsty political thug whom they nicknamed as “Tekere”. He unleashed his brutality on the MMD cadres and peaceful civilians who were championing the cause for democracy in 1990s. Many of them were maimed and brutally injured. Todate he has not apologised and has remained unrepentant. When Chiluba took over power, he deported this thug to his home country Malawi where he was reduced to a beggar because no political party hired him. The president has addressed this issue and whatever happened over the weekend regardless of what caused it is wrong and the law will follow its course. MMD does not preach violence as evidence by the the president’s swift reaction to condemn and apologise on behalf of the party. Anybody found guilty for causing this and assaulting anybody will not be protected by the president because it is not MMD’s agenda to be a violent party

Responding to questions from journalists after he attended the installation of Anglican Bishop Albert Chama as Archbishop of the Church of the province of Central Africa at Lusaka’s Cathedral of the Holy Cross yesterday, President Banda said the PF delegates tried to pull down an MMD flag.
President Banda, who earlier on had pleaded with journalists to just ask him about religious issues, accommodated the political question and said he regretted the incident.

They also hung a big banner reading ‘2011 RB FOR PRESIDENT’; with the aim of provoking the opposition supporters.

I think ba MMD are bringing all these confusions in the country.Why did they GO to where PF was having a meeting in the first instance?I doesnt take one to be a member of a political party to make a decision on this.MMD cadres were very very wrong and this has to be condemed at all costs.No! The presidents behaviour is extremle good recipt for anarchy. All that is happening is not boerdering on a leader who can call himself a president forall Zambians.Refusal for a PVT is a clear indication that this man has some thing to hide. Can RB show some leadership by taking some action instead of saying that the churches must pray for peace. I have not seen anywhere where the President has actually apologised. If you do something wrong, you apologise unreservedly; HE RB has not done so, and he should have actually gone further – instead of trying to explain what happened, he should have been asking what MMD hooligans were actually doing there, if not looking for a fight.

Guys in Zambian politics the president is the answer to all sorts of violence. RB should not just apologise he should stop sponsoring thugs, why does he pretend, he knew what william banda was doing.
