THE Government has appealed for financial and material support from well-wishers to cover expenses for the State funeral of second president of the Republic of Zambia, Frederick Chiluba.

Information and Broadcasting Services Minister Ronnie Shikapwasha said in a statement yesterday that members of the public wishing to make contributions should channel such through the district and provincial administrations countrywide, while those in Lusaka could take their contributions to Cabinet Office.

“Government is also opening a special account with Bank of Zambia through which well-wishers can channel their contributions,” Lieutenant General Shikapwasha said.

Dr Chiluba died on Saturday, June 18, 2011 at his Kabulonga home in Lusaka after an illness.

Meanwhile, mourners have gathered at Musangu Village, the home of the second president of the Republic of Zambia Frederick Chiluba, who passed away in the early hours of last Saturday, to pay their last respects.

Speaking to the Times, Mwense District Commissioner, Benjamin Chama said the mourners had gathered at the house of the former president’s brother, Jim Chiluba.

Mr Chama said some of the relatives had been transported to Lusaka so that they could attend the burial.

He said the Government had only managed to transport a number of them as there were a lot of people.

“It is for this reason that we have decided to host a funeral here to allow mourners who are unable to travel to Lusaka to mourn the former president as well,” he said.

Some elderly relatives expressed sadness at the death of Dr Chiluba, saying it was a big blow to the family and the country as a whole.

The funeral at Musangu Village would end when Dr Chiluba is buried in Lusaka on Monday.

Some traditional leaders such as Mwata Kazembe, Senior Chief Chisunka and Chief Lukwesa when contacted for comments said tradition did not allow them to comment and would only do so after the burial.

Meanwhile, MMD women in Kitwe yesterday held a funeral procession in remembrance of Dr Chiluba in Kitwe and wished President Rupiah Banda God’s strength and wisdom as the country mourns the ex-leader.

Led by provincial women’s chairperson Elizabeth Mataka, the women prayed for President Banda during this difficult time, especially that he had also experienced the death of president Levy Mwanawasa.

Ms Mataka was speaking yesterday during a funeral procession held at her home in Kitwe’s Riverside residential area attended by MMD women leaders from various districts on the Copperbelt.

Among those who attended the procession was former Chingola district commissioner Jean Phiri.

Ms Mataka said President Banda had always exhibited mature and objective leadership by promoting reconciliation and unity.

Speaking during the same procession, MMD Copperbelt University branch chairperson Lazarous Banda said the students at CBU had been mourning Dr Chiluba from Saturday when they received the message that he had died.

  1. Either the late Chilu’s estate is insolvent, or he never actually stole or this is some bad joke, the their option seems likely.

  2. What??? Me and my people donate to the funeral we are not allowed to attend? You guys are crazy and out of your mind. Didn’t him and his cabinet plunder enough from us to cover his funeral expenses? Does this guy have $8 million dollars in Zamtrop account? You even have the audacity to open a bank account for people to donate money into!! You people really take us for granted

Me, my family and my people are not donating a single ngwee. Just use the $8 million for his funeral and bring back the change to build infrastructure in my village and set up a new school and clinic there. Finito!!!

  3. MaRubish!!! Even if i had so much to spare i doubt if i wud contribute it to this midget, there are a lot more pipo out there that genuinely require alms in hard times. Just auction those little boots and suits and yu will surely raise enough!!!

  4. Not to mention the $20 million he gave Moses Katumbi AKA Katebe Katoto for fictitious weapons, please we do not have such short memories. Like i said this is probably some bad joke or like #1 said political fund raising.

  5. This is some bull. No one should contribute anything. We already pay enough taxes its up to government to know how to spend whats in the coffers. All you that feel tempted Iam urging you not to, your intentions might be good but I can assure you that this money will just go into civil servants.

  6. Am not donating either. Nothing personal against FTJ. We pay taxes for such events as these. I think you seek donation for genuine cause and genuine need. I don’t think if no one donates there will be no funeral. These guys know they have what it take to cover these expenses and I don’t think it is fair to start taking more money from the people, they have paid enough to government in terms of taxes like PAYE and VAT. That is a lot of money.

And I don’t think this is even like church tithing which you give to God. It is not like we ate tithing to Chiluba’s funeral. This is really some bad joke from the Government and they should withdraw this call and close that bank account.

  7. Shipakwasha looks ill – probably will skim some of the money for himself. You think we are fools??? just sell some of the shoes and suits to a circus as you will not find anyone short enough

  8. What for??? let the chief mourner “William Banda” and his caders contribute besides MPs do not pay taxes, they might as well contribute from their fat salaries, so ba Rev be the first to contribute Zambians have got nothing to spare, taxes are waiting for them…….

  9. This is an insult from Ronnie?? How can government fail to fund our beloved Kafupi’s funeral they want to steal again as if what chiluba stole was not enough? ,hey sell his presidential house and fund the funeral. Is he going to be burried at embassy park? God forbid , he will disturb LPM who is sleeping peacefully also Kaunda will not have space at that site. Can we bury the ka man in congo river like osama in the ocean?////

  10. OH MY GOD! when will the government stopp going round with a begging bowl – you can’t even bury your own former president! and yet you claim to have so much money from the mines..? this culture of begging by Zambians must be stopped forthwith. let William Banda sponsor the funeral since he has his own list of people who are suppoesed to attend the funeral.. Ronnie – don’t embarrass yourself further please ..we have had a lot of comedy from you

  11. Dont full us!!!!! You mean he had no enough money? How do people donate for such a rich man?You have really taken us for granted zoooooona…..

  12. Ba shikapwasha your President said he has the money,We have seen some political development,Why cant you channel some for a funeral. We wont donate for your party.

  13. This a Govt. funeral on behalf of Zambians who pay tax so use our money not asking people to contribute twice.Nibukabolala…….!!1

  14. We have already contributed by taking the funeral from the family to state funeral! Why do you want us to contribute again? This guy does not deserve 7 days mourning he could have been buried the same day he died just like my brothers and sisters in the villages who are buried same day of passing on.Comeon Shikapwasha, rethink your decision to call upon ourselves to contribute.

    • I agree totally, what kind of broad day light theft!! Wha 7days mourning?? Do unto others what you would like them do unto you! If kafupi wanted 7days mournig, he shld have come up with policies that allowed everyone a decent funeral and burial in the country. Not when others are being taken by bicycles to the cemetery, and are buried same day. Take a visit to Chingwere cemetery see how people are being buried and the numbers dying everyday. Shikapwasha grow up and may be follow too coz u r jst being a menace 2 the Zambian society than …..

  15. Anyway chlilo chililo.. all those with spare cash can donate.. uwafwilisho…no further comment… I want to visit Belvedere Lodge, where is it

  16. Then you will cry poor when Regina demands her house to be built like Maureen. Time to change the laws forever on the s.tupid house for dead presidents wives

  17. this is a very stupid cause honestly pliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiz!! not so long ago,in the papers we saw pictures of the barotse man who had to go armputation due to poor prison conditions and guess what?the govt of the republic of zambia did not donate even a ngwee to that funeral if anything they sent ba shushushu to scare the family members into keeping mum because the private media publicised then case.and now they want us to donate to a man who stole millions from us,which millions we will never see and through a case we were never allowed to seek justice!! i feel very mocked by ronnie and whoever vetoed that statement he released to the public. besides its just the states responsibility to foot such bills.

  18. Amafi yeka yeka, fuulish iddiots this guy is has gone away with our money & u want us to start making him mo rich wen hes dead? Shikapwania u will just put that money in your pockets & the rest for campagn has already said. Mulekwatako insoni ba kolwe . . .

  19. #16 Cutey

Well spoken my dear. ichlilo chililo

IMWE BANA BAKWA SHETANI, just donate , take the great advise from Cutey. Why being so stingy in the name of taxes?

    • twalako iwewine. u must have a bottomless pit to even consider donating the biggest bottomles pit this side of africa.

  20. Ronnie stop begging from so called well wishers. Dont promote the culture of begging at any given opportunity. That funeral is being handled by the state using tax payers money. What else do you expect Zambians to do. By the way is monday 27th going to be declared a public holiday or not coz Chiluba was a champion of workers rights. Workers need time off to mourn Chiluba on burial day. Over to you RB and your Committee headed by Dr. Kalombo Mwansa and Secretary to the Cabinet Dr. Joshua Kanganja.

  21. iye mayo yeeeee!!!!!!!!!! in life he stole from the zambia people and in death you want to continue his legacy. ba pompe tanaaka naimwe. the money will never achieve the intended purpose. mulefwaya ukwiba as per usualll

  22. Not my money! He stole from us and even before we bury him he still wants to dribble us through Nakapwasha! Awe twakana!

  23. De treasurely is de coffer were we donate everyday. Pls dont fool us de majority poor. Use his money he worked 4it:-w

  24. Sell part of the solar gerseys especialy those you installed in houses without running water then use the money for the funeral. What more do u want us to loose besides the money FTJ store and the loss of business at Belvedere Lodge(GRZ Lodge,Ministry of works&supply)where the funeral is being held. Get a life Ronnie

  25. Is this government broke?
    Time they got out!

What kind of greed is this, you beg from the international community, and now you are begging from the people you are supposed to be helping? Please stop insulting the late Second President of ZZambia and his bereaved family!
Shikapwasha, even in Church, the people that must be helped are those who have no means, and not the wealthy. Therefore, don’t bother the people of Zambia.

  26. Tell them why go around asking for donations from well wishers. Where is our taxpayers money. On 14/06/11 alot of cash was poured into ZRA coffers through provional tax and P.A.Y.E and today VAT is due. Dont use FTJ’s funeral as way to beg from the already over taxed Zambians.Dont force us to donate its voluntary.

  27. We need our USD12 Millon back thats when you say we should donate, donate to what when our tax is the one paying for the funeral . Our money was stolen you get your way buy thinking by having an arm on the Judiciary you thought youd win well God is more supreme. All your tackticks have gone in vain and this year you lose your governance . I praise God coz he heared the prayers of the suffering Zambians. You should be ashmed of yourselves….

  28. This is ridiculous, what a waste….please Shikafimofimo, we are really struggling and trying very hard to find it in our hearts to forgive and mourn FTJ with respect. Please, please don’t make it any harder….twakupapata. And tell your friend Wiliam, he’s not doing FTJ any favours too!!

  29. Ronnie,
Are trying me patience or what? Did you have to mention any money in this thing? There should be no donations or contributions at all.Its the same money that caused this fellow to drift. Please don’t mention money at all for Chiluba because he already collected it from the people.

  30. This is ridiculous, what a waste..please Shikafimofimo, we are really struggling and trying very hard to find it in our hearts to forgive and mourn FTJ with respect. Please, please don’t make it any harder, twakupapata. And tell your friend Wiliam, he’s not doing FTJ any favours too!!

  31. No way f/ool! chicken-head piss sh/it! The way you’ve run down the economy in 20 years of MMD, why not get funds from your own coffers. Any contributions will be embezzled, mismanaged, stolen and everything in between.
Horny Shikapwasha why should the people give money to someone who had millions of dollars hauled up somewhere! You thief, clown and bottle-nose dolphin circus jester! get money from your own pockets!

  32. The begging mentality! Remember the audit report after Levy’s funeral? Imprest was more than the cost of civil engineering works. Bafuna kudyelapo maboyi!

  33. Only in Zambia do such thinks occur! This govt has used up all the funds on their campigns now they are panicking. This man should be buried in one of his shoe boxes no need for an expensive casket or just cremate the his cucass. So many people died because of him.Up to now some ex parastatal pensioners still havent recieved their pensions including my dad and Shakasushi is appealing for funds.well kiss my black 4ss son.I ient donating a penny period!

  34. Honestly why should people donate when the state can help…..he was a former president so don’t take Zambians on a ride get  a life you fake MP’s.

  35. “Some elderly relatives expressed sadness at the death of Dr Chiluba, saying it was a big blow to the family and the country as a whole” A big blow to the country as a whole? Speak for yourself.

  36. Zambian government has contingency funds for such eventualities, why asking for well-wishers, very bad example and as a country, we should change our ways of handling such matters.

Use the funds and don’t ask people to donate? A Bank account for what? It will bring theft and corruption. Who will be a signatory of the account??

    Same old stories.

  37. I Am willing to donate an amount of K10 million kwacha. if the government recovers my money this guy sto.

  38. MONEY FOR WHAT? YOU ARE RUBISH! WHY CAN’T YOU USE THE MONEY KAIBILE,YOU STILL WANT SOME MORE!?? ATA BAKAMBWANGA IMWE YOU THINK TULIBAICHE!! AKULILENI IMFWE TULEUMFWA BWINO 7 DAYZ ATLEAST TWATASHA KULI BWEZANI MONEY…..

  39. Please these are state functions and it is very disappointing for a government to ask its citizen who are poverty stricken to contribute towards the funeral of a former head of state. MMD have taken Zambians for granted and think we are fools. You are stopping opposition from attending the funeral while you are asking them for contributions for the same. Shame

  40. Ka kafupi zoona waisa!!!! we just welcome kafupi to this place of blood suckers and already he has a sit where he is going to put his spirit and suffer up  to the end of times!!!

  41. WHY DON’T YOU ASK WILLIAM BAND FOR MORE CONTRIBUTIONS? YOU GUYS ARE A VERY BIG DISGRACE ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH. WILLIAM THE BLOOD OF THE ZAMBIAN PEOPLE YOU KILLING IS ON YOUR HANDS, AND THIS SHALL NEVER GO UNPUNISHED. I WILL KILL YOU MYSELF IN MY INDIVIDUAL CAPACITY, UNLESS THOSE *****S AT THE BOARDER GATES MANAGE TO CONFISCATE MY GUN. OTHERWISE IT’S A SOLEMN PROMISE I’VE MADE TO YOU WILLIAM, GOOD BYE WILLY

  42. At least am able finance family funeral sminus financial support from neighbours. My neigbours only consoles me.

  43. Oh please Boma, this is embarassing. The Govt cant handle a state funeral? Why 7 days then if you cant handle the cost.I just told my workers there in Zambia where to have free meals.

  44. At least am able finance family funeral minus financial support from neighbours. My neigbours only consoles me.

  45. Pls what message are you try to send to the international community? That we do not ve funds for the former presdo ‘s funeral? Next time we ask for a real cause, they will not react. Are we hit by tsunami or is it katrina? Belvedere govt lodge is hosting the funeral with public funds already why again asking the public to pay? This animal farm syndrome must stop we are also supposed to have  a life Zambia is not for politicians only. Zwaa ooooooh

  46. “those that have, more will be given, those that don’t have, even the little that they have will be taken away from them” may be the retired general-cum-reverend is referring to this scripture to further squeeze poor zedians of their hard-earned money. grz don’t run away from ur responsibility

  47. Oh , I though the Rev is still normal. What happened to him?  Still thinking properly? Please Call Katumbi. He still has the US$20m  for the people of Zambia Chiluba gave him to buy arms.  We do not want to suffer in his life and even in his death? Get a life reverend please

  48. Pls what message are you try to send to the international community? That we do not ve funds for the former presdo ‘s funeral? Next time we ask for a real cause, they will not react. Are we hit by tsunami or is it katrina? Belvedere lodge is under Hostels Board which is in the ministry of works & supply they are hosting the funeral with public funds already why again asking the public to pay? This animal farm syndrome must stop we are also supposed to have  a life Zambia is not for politicians only. Zwaa ooooooh chinekeeeee

  49. This is very very very bad. Who is William Band sure that he should trouble respected pipo like this. Shikapwasha also, as already said the taxes we sweat for when paying should be able to pay for funeral expenses. More over when levy mwanawasa died there was a lot of plundering that took place from cabinet office, you want to do the same this time around. Tamwashimone ba makaka. Twalimishiba kalemwayamba.

  50. two things are missing i didnt hear of his relative and also do u tel me this man had no farm for him to b mourned at a lodge??????

  51. Anyway, lets put things straight, am sure this rev did not mean zedians to contribute towards FTJ’s funeral, if so, it’s a big joke!!! I am positive he indirectly meant the International communities, otherwise, he can not be serious!!!

  52. Out of 57 comments no one is willing to donate i think u are all pf kaponyas with stone decorated hearts.

  53. THAT MAN WAS ONE OF THE RICHEST IN AFRICA,SO HOW WISE IS THAT TO ASK FOR CONTRIBUTIONS FROM THE POOR PEOPLE HE STOLE FROM.THAT SOUNDS SENSELESS AND ABSURD.IN STEAD IT SHOULD BE THE OTHER WAY ROUND.GIVE OUT HIS MONEY TO THE POOR.DONT PLAY WITH PEOPLE’S FEELINGS SHIKAPWASHA.
ANY WAY IF YOU WANT TO CONTRIBUTE GO AHEAD,BUT YOUR MONEY WILL JUST GO TO WAIST,ITS MUCH BETTER TO DONATE TO HOSPITALS HE DEPRIVED OF THE MEDICAL RESOURCE BUY STEALING.

  54. Kwena nangu nidonation!!! Nangu nshilentuka teti ncite donate. Ba MMD we know u wnat money for campaigning, tamwashimone and we need an audit report of the funeral expenses. Not a report from Anna Chifungula but an independent body like Deloitte and whatever the name is!!! Goodbye Chiluba, Lesa ekapingula tefwabantu nakalya iyoooooooooo. Kafikepo watulalika insala we tata weee

  55. Ronnie is a weak solidier how did he reach that rank his thinking capacity is shollow and has nosense of shame to say i now understand why become a begger after left the service asking sata for money to buy a bag of mealie meal

  56. Yes asking people to donate for FTJ funeral expenses is stretching it a bit too far. We all know that the ka man stole a lot of money and we spent a lot of money trying to recover it. Please auction his suits in Botswana or Ituri forest as those are the only people that can fit in his suits. The rest of Zambians are more 1.5m tall so are irrelevant and would not want to be seen in his designer suits anyway. Those suits will be of no use in Zambia. Have you seen what vanity does?

  57. The chap must be ashamed of himself. No one should donate. Dont their pockets get full. Chiluba stole enough so let them use his personal money and zamtrop account for the funeral

  58. If you dont want to donate fine!!!!! keep your tumoney even the little you have will be taken away by God utani bati.and dont ask me for help

  59. Begging begging begging, even puting to rest a former republican president you need donations! what a shame, what then are his entilements as former president? This is an insult to the Chiluba’s family. We dont even know how the money from LPM’s was used. Dont fool us Rev,

  60. Red lips!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! we dont have money….o the money Saviour Chungu, Fostine Kabwe and the late have taken so………..

  61. we paid for his hospital bills and his delegation to SA please learn to appreciate Rev. people are failing to raise 2 Miter for MRI at UTH now u are asking for more from them?

  62. Down on the Seashore four little words curved on a rock …………………………………………..”Please stop mocking people”.

  63. Eeshi! Aya malilo sianawane. Ba pepa pamalilo aba president. Awe malilo enze a Mazoka na Mwanawasa. Ba lesa kuyendako, ba funa ndalama na vithu. Aye Malilo a ba Chiluba sianawame?

  64. try getting money from the British they still have the $56million in Natwest waiting for the zeed govt. to register his case in the Zambian courts

  65. Joke of the year.Even FTJ himself would feel insulted by MMD asking for donations for his funeral.Shame, what a government.

  66. IYO KWENA MWALIBELELA UKWIBILA ABANTU BASHIT IMWE…..you and the late are just the same dribbling style u want to find an opportunity/chance to steal from us again iyo tamwashimone uve already stolen enuf infact who is evn mourning kafupi wankantu wev already mwanawasa

  67. Iwe chi Ronnie shikabolala ala bulene impiya aiibile Chiluba mumuloseshepo twapapata bakabolala wakantu enough is enough, if you have no money please you can even sell his shoes from warehouse so tha the fianances you are seeking from poor people you can buy atleast akasaka kabunga, Another thing i can advise you to burry tommorow. we know you just want to steal from poor tashafula nangu buleni kuma account yenu……….twakana!

  68. The goodness is that he died at home and not abroad or else the govt would have overspent more money. Nichililo chabe they should not exaggerate everything like they did for LPM. Whatever the case MHSRIP!

  69. What  Lt. Gen is actually saying is that  “Government is also opening a special account with Bank of Zambia through which voters can channel their “sympathy votes”.

  70. Let Rupiah Banda cancel one foreign trip so the money saved can be used to pay for Chiluba’s funera

  71. Let the family raise the money from his tuma little shoes and suits. No money from me for some dead Lazo !

  72. In all fairness, Chiluba was a former head of state and as such he had numerous entitlements one of them being his funeral to be taken care of by the state. Tax payers did a lot by footing all the costs regarding to his medical treatment in and out of the country, so Ba Ronnie I think it is folly for that kind of thinking to be coercing well wishers to fund funeral expenses. Be serious!!!!!!! and reduce the costs by making the funeral house cadre-free!!!!!!

  73. That chap stole a lot of US millions from us, why cant you use the same for the funeral and allocate the change as follows:-

Regina = 15% (for been there on his death bed)
Children = 20% (for they are his blood)
Vera = 5% (for she started it with Mactribuoy – adultery)
Zambians = 60% (simply becoz its our money)

    Thank you and yours sincerely,
    Chunsu
    Kitwe – Copperbelt

  74. Ba Brown Mpuno (Ronnie),

How can people donate money to a self made millionaire? Sell some suits and under ware to raise funds for feeding cadres.

  75. Shame, there is no french gvt to foot that bill this time around. Way i see it – this funeral will cost us Zmk100bln.
