THE Council of Bishops in Zambia has condemned Patriotic Front (PF) President Michael Sata for shunning Dr Chiluba’s burial, saying Zambians should not condone such behaviour from an aspiring president.
Bishop Peter Chinyemba said it is very disappointing for a politician eyeing the highest job in the land to harbour hatred.
He said in Lusaka yesterday that in a Christian nation, such behaviour from leaders should not be condoned because it is likely to create unnecessary animosity in the country.
“We should not tolerate such attitudes from aspiring leaders because it is unChristian and leaders should be promoting unity and not division,” Bishop Chinyemba said.
Bishop Chinyemba said it is important for leaders like Mr Sata to leave a good legacy by uniting the nation and not to harbour grudges against others.
“Mr Sata is not a young man and one day, people will look back and see what he has done. He should set an example for young people to follow,” Bishop Chinyemba said.
He said Mr Sata claims to have been good friends with Dr Chiluba but his behaviour does not attest to that. If he means well, he should apologise to the people of Zambia and Dr Chiluba’s family.
Bishop Chinyemba said Mr Sata has worked with Dr Chiluba and out of respect, he should have gone to comfort the former President’s family.
“No true friend can behave like that. How can anyone fail to attend a friend’s funeral?” Bishop Chinyemba said.
He said citizens should be wary of leaders who behave like Mr Sata.
“We should not accept such leaders. We cannot have people with such attitudes to lead the country,” Bishop Chinyemba said.
Bishop Chinyemba commended President Banda for the unifying manner in which he brought the nation together to mourn Dr Chiluba.
“This is how leaders should behave, not to perpetrate hatred just because of political differences and the desire to assume power,” he said.
“Mr Sata should emulate President Banda, who has committed to work with anyone in nation building,” Bishop Chinyemba said.
He said leaders should be able to put aside their political differences and embrace each other in difficult moments.

Condemning Sata for not attending the burial of Chiluba will not solve the numerous problems this country is facing. FTJ is gone and thats it. People like Bishop Chinyemba have a short memory. MMD thugs threatenned to sort out Sata if he dared them by visiting the funeral house/lodge and this was further confirmed by security officials that Sata should not attend for security reasons. Not only that there were speculations that he was unwell so despite that he made an effort and viewed the body at MICC. Even if Sata attended the burial it would not have made a difference as the whole function was a state affair and he had no role to play. Another question was Sata invited by the State coz Secretary to the cabinet Dr. Joshua Kanganja stated attendance strictly by card invitation.

The worst thing in life is to miss burial of someone you used to eat with on the same table. According to African Tradition, one is supposed to attend the burial. Failure to that he is supposed to go to funeral house and exculpate him/her self for not having attended the burial. We should not imitate other culture. Fellow youths, I greet all of you in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. My concern is the lever of intolerance towards each other across political parties. My humble appeal to you all is that we stop being tribal and insulting each other for our own future, we are one and should tow the same line, which is our future. We have to do it for ourselves, not for an individual. Here is what we can do:–
Make a personal decision to vote for a candidate we feel is capable of transforming our economy ( Lets not look at their education or how popular they are).

SATA said he was NOT going to attend the funeral. He later said He could NOT attend the burial because it was HIGHLY commercialised. He never mentioned that he was denied a card. Each Political Party was given invitation card allocation. SATA said He would NOT attend. Further, when a funeral is declared state funeral all important leaders and foreign deginatories attend. Failure to do so sends a very wrong picture. If SATA had won the elections in 2006, was he going to shun FTJ’s burial? since as former head of state he was entitled to that.
