President Rupiah Banda has officially commissioned the construction works of the 250 million US dollars Itezhi tezhi Hydro Power station in Southern province.
The Project which will create over 450 direct jobs for the people of Itezhi tezhi will be implemented under the Public Private Partnership between ZESCO and Tata Africa.
President Banda says government has prioritised the construction of new power plants in order to ensure reliable and secure supply of electricity to the Zambian economy.
President Banda says his government will continue to develop mini and hydro power electric plants in all parts of the country.
Mr Banda says the Itezhi Tezhi hydro Power station will have spill over effects which include the construction of new roads, houses, hospitals and schools.
He has also thanked Tata Africa for investing over 250 million US dollars in one of Zambia’s key sectors.
Mr Banda says the decision by Tata Africa to invest in Zambia’s energy sector is a demonstration of the favourable investment policies in the country.
And Energy permanent Secretary Teddy Kasonso says the construction of the hydro power station is a sign of a hard working government.
Mr Kasonso says the hydro power station once completed will not only benefit the country but the whole region.
Indian High Commissioner to Zambia Ashok Kumar says the power project will enhance the capacity for the country to generate electricity.
ZECSO Board Chairman Kwaleyela Lamaswala says the project will be completed on time.

Keep up with the good work Mr. President, my president!
How is he commissioning it? It has been operating for over 30 years
Airtime Sakala, do some reasearch before you comment. You may hate RB or anyone else for that matter, but at least have your own facts correct.
Boss I have seen it in operation since I was a child, was the dam there for fishing purposes? or just to drown some wildlife?
Bakulu are they building a completely new dam or are they expanding the current one??
President Banda today commissioned the sunrise and the sunset and the rain
No 2 the dam never had a power station…
Ba engineer, this is quite insightful to be honest I have always been under the mistaken impression that Itezhi Itezhi had a hydro plant, its only now that i have come to find out that the dam was constructed to regulate the flow of kafue river into the kafue gorge.
The Engineer(Australia), its good that you keep educating these guys on real issues as they they wrongly pass comments. I hope there is an improvement in their comments with time following the guidance you have been giving them.
Thats why you are winning mr president :)>-
Mr President thats the spirit we love and definitely u r winning coz we are voting for u enmasse.VIVA RB VIVA MMD.CHWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!
Its amazing at the rate HE RB is commissioning projects. No time frame is given as to when the Project will be completed.
The reporter has inadventently ommitted the time frame and therefore that does not mean the project has no time. Do you need to be told even simple things?
So what is in it for TATA Africa, if it puts in $250m how much is it getting back and don’t just rejoice then you’ll start crying when your next bill comes through!!
# 9 Jay Jay, i salute for the wonderful analysis. This could mean that no company tax for Tata in Zambia, other benefits that we are not aware of. Zambians let us learn from these that they are dirty and filthy, and no benefit. We need wind turbines to produce electricity, also where is the government money?
imwe electricity will go up so they can recoupe their money and you will enjoy the benefits of not having load shedding right in the middle of an FA match, well atleast those with money will be milked to the bones and if you dont have ka ngwee then back to koloboi.. Thats the capitalist world we leave in.
Whether MMD or PF you should go through these PPP deals with afine-toothed comb as these deals are very costly in the long term and your kids ad grand kids will pay for them when these dinosaur politicans like buffoon RB are long gone…some bloggers here are on MMD payroll don’t follow blindly like a Zebra, the Lions will catch you first as you don’t know where you are going!!!
RB come and commission my house.
This report is Summarised otherwise this is a PPP project of a counterpart financing nature. When you talk about FDI you ensure that all the critical components are clear and since these are long term investments whose beneficiaries are our children, lets be grateful to the people that take the initiative for the sake of our future Zambia. These are the project that will improve the welbeing of all Zambians. More Jobs for Zambians, More taxes for GRZ for roads, schools, hospitals etc- these are the connerstones of development not consuption before you produce. You can’t get the country anywhere
I just like RB’s pace and versatility! He has my vote and my household of six with 4 adults plus a a good number of workers are tagging along! You can’t have it better!!!!!
So 90 days is possible and RB is proving that!!??
Great work RB, Iam actually taking R&R tomorrow , just to go and vote for you. You have done great work , just in thrre years of office. Good job MMD
Interesting RB following foot prints of HH will not be surprised if he will be going to Namwala where HH is. HH is winning this year no doubt.
KEEP ON COMMISSIONING MR PRESIDENT THATS THE SPIRIT IT’S DONCHI KUBEBA TIME
SATA WILL FINISH THEM ALSO
Imwe please tell us what RB has actually done there apart from showing his ugly smug face with a scissor in-hand to cut the ribbon.
No 9, 10 and 11
With all due respect you need to go and understand how PPP projects are funded before making comments otherwise you are misleading people. PPP projects are funded off balance sheet. That means the payment of the loan has recourse only from the project cashflow. GRZ/Zesco only need to provide a power purchase agreement. You fears would be unfounded if you understood PPP funding structures.
I dont know what jay jay does for a living! There is no country that ever developed without loans external and/or internal.Maybe Pf have a different formula for raising moola and developing Zambia! India is looking for around 200 billion dollars for new infrastructure to take the country to the next level. Dont over politicize issues! Of cause money has value!when you borrow 100 dollars you cant pay back 100 dollars.teach that to your children.when you find mmd eating join them and vise versa. We have to develop Zed.GOD BLESS ZAMBIA.
My my, how the PF people are silenced by such projects…next they will tell us that Sata will complete this $250m project in 90 days! Time to Kubeba – time to tell all of Zambia what an old fool Sata is and how when he loses on 20 September the PF will fade away….without him it is nothing, and when he loses for the fourth time it is time for “KUBEBA BYE BYE!!”
chweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee…RB 2011..let us continue to develop zambia…GO RB
Jay Jay, if you care to check the project is being financed by the World Bank and AfDB in part. From what I see it has gone through due process. Competitive bidding, environmental assessment and warts. It is difficult to disagree with you when you say these PPP projects need careful scrutiny. Perhaps you state the blinding obvious, but can’t see your point. Anyway after 25 years at least Zambia will have an asset it can call its own. So I think this is the way to go.
If only MMD had been on this course from 1991, imagine were we would be now!!??? I hope this continues after the elections. With a country of $19 billion GDP with a population of only 13 million we definitely can do WAY much better. we are looking at an income per capita of over $1,000 per individual. SOMETHING IS WRONG HERE!!!!
#4 engineer get your head out of your a s s. Why was the dam there with no power station? Do you even know what a dam is for? Fishing you think?
the Dam didn’t have a power station, the water was channeled to Kafue Gorge where the power was generated. What this means is that now electricity will be produced at Itezi Tezhi itself and at Kafue Gorge also.
Simply put more electricity, fewer power cuts!
Airtime Sakala is one of the dumbest people on this forum! Always try to get your facts right first before you expose your illiteracy!
all the pf members there don’t think….fikala
iwe airtime sakala, the dam already had a power station. Engineers have no time to debate with ignorant people like u. S.t.u.p.i.t……
Rubish. How do you commission something that has not been constructed yet. *****s, fools. maga dogs, just concentrate on preparing hand over notes.
Even a fool can commission works. Still doesn’t make him a good leader. The Zambian economy is growing regardless of who’s in power. This year DONCHI KUBEBA are taking control………Move over RBish why don’t you take another holiday or something this time don’t bother coming back……
When will the bottom road alongside Lake Kariba be commissioned? I fear time is running out!Â
Credit must be given where due.Well done RB & MMD.
The initial purpose of the Itezhi tezhi dam was to store water for the hydroelectric power station at Kafue Gorge Dam, some 260 km downstream. The Kafue River has a very high seasonal variation, flooding in the rainy season and slowing to about a twentieth of the peak flow rate at the end of the dry season. Power generation requires a steady flow, which can only be achieved by having a reservoir large enough to store the rainy season flood for use in the dry season. At Kafue Gorge the topography does not allow a large reservoir. The designers of the dam therefore had the idea of siting the main reservoir at Itezhi-Tezhi, and releasing the water in a steady flow down the river to Kafue Gorge Dam.
No 31 thank you…. maybe 24 now releases what an ass he his making of himself. The Itezhi tezhi dam was constructed as a water storage dam not a power generating dams.
So Ba 24 some of us are no plate washers…. Â
Itezhi-tezhi dam was built as a reservoir for Kafue gorge power station. It provides steady flow to kafue gorge even in the dry season. Lets hope a proper feasibility study was done to avoid constricted water flow to kafue gorge which is more critical to the country. Flooding downstream during wet season is also another potetial problem.
make it easy for HH man to get through..thanx alot ..vote 20HH
Let me make the following clear. There is a dam at Kafue Gorge which stores some water. Because of the Kafue Flats building a large reservoir although possible would have resulted in a large shallow reservoir resulting in high evaporation losses. The construction of a power station at Itezhitezhi is not a new or RB’s idea. If credit must be given then it must be given to KK. The construction of the power station was conceived at the design stage but because the Kafue Gorge was adequate to cater for the electricity demand at the time, the construction of the power station was not considered. The same water will be used twice for power generation. Therefore, the water spilled from the existing spillway for power generation at Kafue Gorge may have to be reduced.
