Ndola is on the up, charges Mtayachalo

NDOLA on the Copperbelt has seen a resurgence of various industries which have led to increased job creation, former National Energy Sector and Allied Workers Union secretary general Yotam Mtayachalo has said.

Mr Mtayachalo said it was clear that Ndola was on the upswing in terms of industrial activity as some old industries had continued to expand, while new companies had opened in the city. He said in Ndola yesterday that the Government’s commitment to attracting investment had resulted in the setting up of new industries that were benefitting the local people.

Mr Mtayachalo said it was not correct that Ndola was inactive because a lot of private and State investments had gone into re-industrialising the city.

He was reacting to former Zambia Congress of Trade Unions president Fackson Shamenda who said in yesterday’s Post newspaper that the MMD Government had failed to revive industries, and singled out Ndola as being desolate.

He said the setting up of cement plants by Lafarge and Zambezi Portland had stirred further economic development in Ndola. “Now we are expecting the US$400 million Dangote Cement Plant which will provide 6, 000 jobs,” he said.

Mr Mtayachalo said Ndola Lime had continued to provide steady employment for many residents and that its re-capitalisation would guarantee creation of more jobs. He said it was clear that the foreign direct investment (FDI) coming into the country had led to positive effects on many Zambians.

“There has been more than $4 billion investment in the mining sector and more than 20, 000 jobs have been created so I cannot understand anyone claiming that FDI is not benefitting anyone,” he said. Mr Mtayachalo said many industries had been set up while others were being revised not only in Ndola but elsewhere in the country.

He said the revival of Roan Antelope Mine and the Konkola Deep Mining Project were additional evidence of how much FDIs were contributing to industrial development and job creation. “It is not right for people like Mr Fackson Shamenda to assume that there is nothing happening in Ndola or that there are no jobs being created,” he said.

Mr Mtayachalo said President Banda was not responsible for the closure of most industries in Ndola but had done well in creating policies that would ensure continued revival and investment by new companies.

He said it was Mr Shamenda, the Ndola Central Constituency Patriotic Front parliamentary candidate, who had allegedly failed as a labour leader to prevent many companies from closing down.

He advised Mr Shamenda to focus on discussing matters from an informed and accurate position and not to mislead the public.

  1. I was in Shopright last evening and found long queues there. I was just talking to myself, People have money, hee

  2. No.1
I can’t agree with you more. For how can you force someone to see what they don’t want to see? As for our coleagues, reasoning has abundantly eluded them to the point that they cant use their personal judgement to distinguish good from bad. The evil and divisive orientation of membe has caught up with them. Sorry!

  3. You are all deluded, you go into shoprite at the start of a new month, taking into consideration civil servants get paid late and you find long queues and you say people have money? Now that’s the most non logical thinker I have ever seen. Secondly why does LT carry a story that is reacting to Mr. Shamenda’s comment but have not posted Mr. Shamenda’s interviews. Again pathetic and disgusting blog journalism at it’s best.

  4. Shamenda precided over ZCTU when come companies started closing down in Ndola when we just liberalised our economy. The demise of ZCCM contributed greatly to the reduced business activity in Ndola. The reasons for this are simple, we had an exagerated economy and there was just one single player in the economy, ZCCM. All manufacturing companies, be it in detergents, pharmaceutical and even baking had ZCCM as their single most significant customer. Naturally, when ZCCM was sold the new mine owners had very little to do with for instance tooth paste and so on. Then again, investors were allowed to set up industry anywhere and not just in Ndola. Enough said, Shamenda should tell us what he and his coleague are going to do to revive Ndola and people will decide whether to give them votes or not

  5. # 8 Jonas, You must be in Canada or wherever and is out of touch with what is happening in the country. LT has mentioned that Mtayachalo was reacting to a story attributed to Shamenda that appeared in The Post. And for your information, most civil servants get their pay around the 18th of every month and they are promptly paid and less disgruntled than before though the perks are still low.

  6. It is funny that the people who complain about ‘increasing’ unemployment are the people who have lost political jobs. Shamenda was ZCTU President when Chiluba his friend was dismantling industries and sending people to redundancy. He never stood up for the workers. Then he became an interational Trade unionist, he had dollars but now he is broke! He wants a job with PF and blatantly and irresponsibly claims that things are worse now???? Give me a break!

  7. This Mtayachalo dude is just another joker.I had the opportunity of visting the Ndola industrial area during my last trip to Zed.The sight that met me was really horrifying….i almost shed tears. My visit to the town center didn`t help matters either.Only jokers like Mtayachalo can claim development in Ndola….unless the opening up pick n pay is the new meaning of development.Bantalamisoka nabonaula ichalo chesu.

  8. Dear bloggers, I can perceive that you are young in age who do not know what ndola used to be. It had industries like Dunlop, Vitafoam, Colgate etc. So Mtayachalo wants to please his pay master RB. I can’t believe that a man who represented workers at ZESCO can turn around today and calim Ndola is on upswing in employment. ZCTU during Shamenda’s reign was against the wholesale privatisation mmd embarked on. Shame on you Mtayachalo!

  9. Tell them Yotam these shameless ungrateful pipo.Just say thanx and give credit were it is due.Shamenda u r a failure leave young ones to work for Ndola we dont want u *****.VIVA RB.

  10. Can people inform us on the situation in Ndola now compared with the time when Shamenda was the ZCTU President after him and his friend FTJ destroyed the city? Did we have more industries functioning or not? That same time Sata was in Govt as a very senior member. Bashamenda, you will only win because people in Zambia do not vote for progressive people but they vote for parties so if you are lucky then you will win but lookimng at things now, people think before voting. They might like your president and your party but not you

  11. # No 2 & 5. Do you also realize that those queues in Shoprite are a result of having LIMITED shops which provide better products and price. Ndola is a city but people from almost all the locations have to do their shopping in town.

  12. Shamenda thats your own opinion, its beta many pipo benefit than a few like this rb gvmnt. Shamendala & the other if you support MMD that does not mean its no longer PF strong, just the few of u here.
    Viva Pabwatoo

  13. I WAS THERE IN JULY THIS YEAR. MMD HAS KILLED THIS CITY. WHERE IS DUNLOP, LEVER BROTHERS, COLGATE, VITAFOAM, FURNICOZ, NORTHLAND ENGINEERING, STIRLING PRODUCTS, LYONS BROOKE BOND, COPPER HARVEST, IBEX CORPORATION, BAIRD AND TATLOCK, ROVER ZAMBIA, RECKEITT AND COLMAN, ETC.ALL THESE WERE MANUFACTURES USING AT LEAST 70% LOCAL INPUTS EXCEPT FOR FEW. THE DAMAGE TO NDOLA IS IRREVERSABLE. SO WHY VOTE FOR MMD?

    • Yeah you’re right. It was destroyed by FTJ and those close to him like a certain Michael Sata. FTJ is dead so only Michael we can get his payback by not getting our vote.

  14. Yotam Mtayachalo is MMD Copperbelt provincial information and publicity secretary. What else do you expect from him except the rubbish in this article? SHAME MMD!!!

  15. Most of these people above commenting are kiddos who were born yesterday in 1991 and wouldn’t even know development if it was seated on their laps ask your Daddies and Mummies about the old days then come and comment you goats…ba kabuudo!!
    Signing off!!

  16. This chap is a young fellow, he doesnt know what ndola industrial area used to look like. maybe there’s an improvement in the number of toilets in twapia & mushili!

  17. Lets face the truth, MMD has destroyed Ndola city and Zambia in general. Ndola used to be a hive of industrial activity then, and not what you are seeing today.
Off topic, Zambia is in a mess today becoz of mmd. At the time, 1991, when mmd took over, if they were serious with governing the country, Zambia would not be where it is today. Corruption, tribalism, theft, bribery, character assasinations etc, are all synonymous with mmd. Zambians today are like strangers in their own country, no dignity, easily bought by the mmd, not-patriotic and can easily sell their country for a song.

  18. The mmd have introduced a very dangerous and pathetic style of politics especially under RuBBish. MMD lives on lies and mis-information using ZNBC or rather “Dead”NBC. ZNBC (in conjuction with MMD), has become the country’s number one enemy for democracy by doing dirty job of misleading the country by sending wrong information across the provinces. Its news is the worst ever! It is by all means the mm mouth piece and not the national broadcaster.
This year people, vote for change. Vote for patriotism, vote for Michael Sata for strong leadership. Vote for Sata, the man of the people.

  19. If Ndola is in such a deplorable state such as #25 claims, then what part has the pf council played in it’s demise seeing as though Satan publicly stated that the pf run councils would show the country what a pf led govt would be like? Also lets not forget that a certain Mr Satan was in the MMD administration for the first ten years that oversaw the privatisation of many companies in Ndola and elsewhere in the country. Surely, if Ndola no longer has the industries it once had, Mr Satan is partly responsible as he seemed to support the policies of the MMD govt at the time to the extent that he was prepared to use violence to usher in an unconstitutional third-term for Chiluba.

  20. MMD IS A SEPARATE LEGAL ENTITY FROM SATA. HE LEFT MMD MANY YEARS AGO. MOREEVER HE WAS NOT ITS LEADER. MIND YOU SATA DESPITE BEING CLOSE TO CHILUBA IS AMONG IF NOT THE ONLY MMD MEMBER WHO HAS NO CORRUPTION CASE. IN IN UNIP, HE CAME OUT CLEAN. FOR PRIVATIZATION, CHIEF ADVISERS WERE ECONIMISTS AND FINANCE MINISTERS. DUNLOP ASKED FOR REBATES LIKE THE MINES BUT NEVER GIVEN. THE PLANT WAS UPROOTED AND IS IN ASIA WORKING AND WE BUYING TYRES FROM RSA. FOR LYONS,COPPER HARVEST WHO CONSUMED MOST PINEAPLLES FROM NORTH WEST THEY ALSO FACED UNFAIR COMPETION FROM DUTY FREE RSA RETAILS CHAINS. WE NEED A PATROTIC LEADER WHO PUTS ZAMBIA BEFORE ANYTHING OR HIMSELF.

  21. I cant forget that mtayachalo stole from Zesco together with Liato. Do we believe that he can tell us anything without money being the catalyst?
    No again……….ba SAKALANYONGO ba MMD.

  22. Ndola is definitely rising , we can’t rely on old industries
you have to be able to attract new investment , companies
close overall the world not just Zambia, Ndola now has
    1st class stadium

  23. i went thru the industrial area to carry a research i was suprised to find that most of the premises were just guarded without any activity. i realy got tired that day because it took me an average of 500meters to find an industry in operation the rest were elephant buildings.Mukuba textile which used to employ 400 had only 12 employees.i really felt bad for my country.most owners complained of high cost of production and inability to compete with cheap goods from china.Mutaya chalo is just politicking.

  24. who can eat a1st first class stadium? iwe chi shumba ulekwata amano elo abo bene bapangile stadium makula that even beat ghana , ivory coast or nigeria.

  25. You CHIMPANZEE Mtayachalo didn’t you know that the US$400 million Dangote Cement Plant is from a NIGERIAN investor? You should never trust NIGERIANS as the money can be from their ONLINE scams. And Zambians do not even know how these NIGERIANS will obtain Zambian passports and misuse them on their drug elands.

Mtayachalo, you seem to be BLIND to the reality, you can not count NIGERIANS investments as real.

You are very very BLIND politically!!!

  26. #2 PALA DENDE LAMALA, MUSOZE SIMA,

You MORON CAT.Did you see the following day that it is the SAME Zambians on the long queues in SHOPRIGHT? It is the same RICH Zambians who are on the queues in Shopright as they THROW the bread they bought the previous day and buy bread from Shopright the following day.

People like you from the USA can afford not those in Chipulukusu. NO NO NO!!!

The GAP between the RICH (like RUPIAH Banda) and POOR Zambians like those in KANYAMA, CHAWAMA, CHIPULUKUSU e.t.c is growing.

  27. Its like you learn my thoughts! You seem to understand so much approximately this, like you wrote the e book in it or something. I think that you could do with a few p.c. to drive the message house a little bit, however other than that, this is magnificent blog. An excellent read. I’ll certainly be back.
