President Sata to host luncheon for Chinese investors

Chinese Ambassador to Zambia Yuxiano Zhou

President Michael Sata is tomorrow expected to host a luncheon at State House in honour of the Chinese business people operating in Zambia.

Chinese Ambassador to Zambia Zhou Yuxio is expected to lead a team of 150 Chinese business executives based in Zambia to State House.

This is contained in a press statement made available to ZANIS in Lusaka today by Special Assistant to the President for Press and Public Relations George Chellah

Zambia’s relations with China dates as far back as Zambia’s post political independence days. Zambia was the first country in Africa to sign diplomatic relations with China in 1964, and since then Chinese investors have become increasingly prominent players in Zambia’s key economic sectors. However, this hasn’t come without controversy.

In October 2010 two Chinese managers shot and wounded 11 Zambian coal miners. The MMD government later dropped charges against the two Chinese managers.

After his inauguration President Michael Sata called on Chinese investors to adhere to the country’s labour laws.He said Patriotic Front -PF- government was concerned that there was unlimited number of Chinese expatriates who were coming into the country to take up jobs which Zambians are capable of doing.
The President however said the PF government welcomes Chinese investment that will benefit the local people and the investors themselves.

  1. :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

He has run out of ideas and now he wants them for the 90 days.  The wheel does turn indeed.

  2. Bwana Sata

No country can develop without the chinese. How you are now working up. The were just laughing when you said you will tell them to go.

    USA
    AUSTRALIA
    GERMANY
    FRANCE
    JAPAN

All have negative trade deficits with the chinese. You simply can not do without them.

    • #1 Bush Engineer,
Chinese iinvestors in countries you’ve listed  are made to follow laws  of those countries, we need their money they need our copper therefore, we not asking for too much from them asking them to provide safe working conditions, reasonable wages and above all mutual respect.

  3. If you are clever go to them and ask for assistance to develop Zambia. The have the money, skills and knowledge. With the good will Zambia has with the Chinese you will achieve much. Fight them and that will be your down fall

  4. lets see him defend this before his many supporters that he promised to kick chinese out!
chinese are our friends and we must understand that friendship if we’re to go further

  5. Even the Europeans are looking up to them to sort out their Euro crisis. we are we to say w can throw them out just like that. remember it is the next Super power in a decade time as the USA is collapsing soon therefore we are better placed to be closer to reap the benefits

  6. This man is funny! The days of common sence and tamanga are gone! did he realy think Zambia is an island! Go and suck up the the chings but in future think before you open that mouth of yours…………………………

  7. #4 Engineer – there is no such thing as a free lunch, not even at State House. Those same Chinese that Sata railed against for many years are now his best friends, Sata has finally woken up to the realiity iof being in power – he cannot decide who his friends are. Remember how he attacked RB for the Ndola stadium, how he mocked RB for the mobile hospitals…well they were all bought with Chinese money, and in return Zambia has to offer cheap natural resources, at cheap labour rates. Sata is in the same boat as RB was…welcome to the club.

  8. Well done Mr President. While you are at it, ask them to respect our people. Tell them we need them, but they need us too. It`s a two way thing.

MMD and UPND must be gritting their teeth at this.

Again excellent move by the action man.

  9. Well done Mr President I know you want tell them that you don’t hate them but there deeds. They should know that Zambians have to benefit from there investment and not a one way traffic.
GOD BE WITH YOU AND PROTECT YOU DAY AND NIGHT!

  10. The article reads:This is contained in a press statement made available to ZANIS in Lusaka today…. you people can you see the sense here.Jst a few hour after new broke out that Europe goes hat in hand to china,Zambia now wants to host the chinese.Imagine Klaus Regling, chief executive of the European Financial Stability Facility,is in china to try and lobby China to invest in the eurobond,China you may wish to know is the largest Creditor in the world.

  11. Keep businessmen away from the President. That is how corruption starts. Such meetings undermine the authority of officers tasked with dealing with investors, especially wealthy foreigners. How do you deal with somebody who has already had discussions with the president? Rubbish

  12. Numb-skulls are lining up to talk abotu Sata backtracking on PF relations with China. Who said he has? Things like this happen all the time – what’s to stop him from layign down the law and inviting more investment but with proper working conditions?

Only a fool would see something wrong in this luncheon. The thinking man would expect it to be a platform for cementing proper investor relations between Zambia and a country that’s weeks away from producing the 7th billion person on the planet.

Keep the mudslinging to a bare minimum, we have hard work to do as Zambians.

  13. I will never fall for any politician. They will say anything for a vote.Give then one you are done.PF wanted chinese out, they called them all sorts of names.Today after news of Europe bending down to china.Zambia now wants to host them. When i hear of Klaus Regling, chief executive of the European Financial Stability Facility visit china.I knew zambia would come up with something to apeal the china man.I was waiting for this kind of news all day

  14. Now it is proved that Zambia cannot do without the Chinese. Remember how the Chinese were demonised during the campaigns? People felt so happy when they heard one section of the political players condemn the Chinese and promised to rid Zambia of the same race. Now we shall dine with them at the same table. May we know what has changed? This is what happens when you keep talking without thinking. You end up swallowing your own words. Watch this space. More to come…

  15. Looks liike most poeople here dont understand what Sata was campaigning about. He said the chinese are welcome in Zambia as long as they follow the labour laws, so he does not have to recind anything he is simply fulfilling what he promised. As he will be hosting them he will be telling them what is expected of them. He wants to pass on the message clearly.

  16. Are people here pretending to be dull just to “mweneshamo” the President or are they really dull? Asking the choncholiz to respect our labour laws is NOT the same as chasing them, you dunder heads!

  17. MR PRESIDENT PLZ TELL THE CHINESE TOMORROW WHEN TO COME TO LUNCH AT STATE HOUSE THAT THE BOGUS CHINESE INVESTERS HAS TO GO AND THE GENUINE ONES ARE WELCOME TO STAY.MR PRESIDENT PLZ BRING IN MORE TAWANESE AND TIBETIANS INVESTERS TO ZAMBIA BECAUSE THEY MUCH MORE SINCERE THAN THE CHINESE.THANKYOU MR PRESIDENT.BOGUS CHINESE PLZ BE PREPARED TO GO BACK TO SHANGHAI ON THE 1ST PLANE YOU CAN CATCH OR BE SORRY.

  18. Problem is most people just talk for the sake of it. HE Sata never ever said that he will chase the Chinese. What he was saying was that when in Zambia they should not be doing jobs that Zambians are supposed to do, operating machinery, cooking nshima etc, and its on that basis that most people voted for him becuse a lot of people know we need the Chinese so if he was planning to chase then they were not going to give him the vote. May God deliver you bane. Even when he became president he categorically told the Chinese that they need to rerespect our laws that it should be a 50-50 situation. And one thing you should realise is that HE Sata is a very sharp man and has alot of intelligent people around him. Just wait and see God has answered our prayers kano nga tamwalepepa. GOD BLESS ZAMBI

  19. Does Sata even understand why he is hosting this event for the Chinese investors! Only two weeks ago the man was castigating Zambia for having abandoned the West for China? I guess Sata never even understood what he meant!

  20. Sata has NEVER said he will chase the Chinese away! F.ools. His beef with the Chinese, as it should be with any patriotic Zambian, is to respect the laws of the land and to desist form bringing Chinese labourers into the country. Surely anyone with common sense does support that. Why should we stand and watch while our brothers and sisters are paid $60 a month and getting shot at when they protest. I dare you to shoot a Chinese national in China and see if you will ever live to see another day. Even if you did this in Zambia you would be locked up. Come on be proud to be Black and Zambian. Our president is just looking out for our welfare. Most likely he will be reminding them of respecting Zambian laws. I know Sata is not shy to speak his mind.

  21. @25 KACHIGAMBA YOU ARE VERY RIGHT ABOUT HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT THESE DOG EATERS BECAUSE ZAMBIA SHOULD BE FREE OF CHINESE KAPONYA . MR SATA SHOULD BRING MORE HARD WORKING AND TRUSTWORTHY INVESTERS FROM JAPAN,POLAND, RUSSIA ,HUNGARY ,TIBET AND TAIWAN. THESE PEOPLE WILL ATLEAST TREAT ZAMBIANS HUMAINLY AS THEY HAVE HUMAN RIGHTS IN THEIR RESPECTIVE COUNTRIES UNLIKE THESE YELLOW MAN FROM BEIJING .MR SATA SHOULD TELL THEM TOMORROW THAT THEY SHOULD PACK THEIR BAGS SOON OR RISK BEING REMOVED FORCEFULLY WITH GUNS POINTED AT THEIR THICK SKULLS.

  22. THEY ARE PROBABLY BEING INVITED TO A LUNCHEON WHOSE BILL THEY FOOT! AND TO BE TOLD TO CUT TIES WITH RB IN ALL DEALS THEY CUT WITH HIM – MEANING THAT THEY AND TURKISH MAY STILL BUILD THE NEW STATE HOUSE AND AIRPORT, THAT’S HOW IT GOES. RB BAMU PAMPULA!!

  23. Tell them to put up a new stadium, a new state house and a new KK International airport free of charge or tell them to pack and GO.

  24. The European Union is going to use money from the Chinese to help them with the current crisis in the region. Some of the companies in England such as Rover are now in Chinese hands. British Universities are full of Chinese students who go back to their motherland after their studies. This is a giant that we cannot simply ignore. I remember in the 1980s Kaunda chased the IMF only to run back to them shortly after doing so. These guys need to be handled carefully.

  25. pf supporters had all the euphoria that the chinese would be chased once in grz..just wait for the reversal of most of your pre-election promises..

  26. Australian Engineer do not put your words in the president’s mouth. Where, when did MCS say he will chase away the Chinese. You sound like a frustrated cadre rather than an Engineer.

  27. they have the medicine for all allergies. China is the oldest civilisation Bwana. the Taiwanese should be mad with him after all that funding.

  28. Chinese investment is here to stay whether we like it or not. The President should act more and talk less. The Chinese are shrewd business people. Miners in Chambeshi went on strike to demand K2,000,000.00 salary increment across the board. A number of dismissal letters were issued and the miners trooped back to work. The President may tell them to respect Zambian labour laws but the Chinese will retort in fact they pay better salaries than the Zambian employers. The Chinese will say the minimum wage has not been changed despite the Presidential decree to have it changed “with immediate effect”. The President will talk but nothing will change if no action is taken. The dilemma the President has found himself is that Zambian is a democratic country and not a dictatorship.

  29. Chinese. You can’t live with them (they come in huge numbers and take our people’s jobs) and you can’t shoot them (they have big money. Ask EU and USA). And therein lies the need for tactical diplomacy from plot No. 1. So lets see what comes out of this meeting…

  30. Mr Sata has lost a lot of weight since he became an opposition leader. Now he wants to build up again with plenty of food. The same man who says that Zambians are starving will be having a party at State House. How much is the budget for all these Chinese?

  31. Good move attract those dragon investors here like the way Brazil has done with string attached of course adhering to Labour laws and internationally conditions of service…the once mighty USA is now so debt that its prnting dollars into the system like UPG was printing our ballot papers and if the Chinese sent bailiffs to collect their trillions they owe them that would be the end of them. So treat Chinaman with respect but lay down the law to them.

  32. This is the side of Sata that I like. He shouldn’t let himself down by falling prey to his own emotions. A president has to be a president. Good one!

  33. MALIKOPO , It not a question of asking the bogus investors to go but the government streamlining the way they engage the so called investors. The “bogus” investors were let into the country by someone whether through corrupt means or otherwise. Why not critically look at the criteria used for signing on these investors. It is easier and less costly to screen the investors even before they set foot in the country. No need to blame them as if they just “invaded” the country and no one knew about it…

  34. People , dont you see the connection here? The reason RB was all smiles at the Independence celebrations was because he had Sata were he wanted him to be. He simply told him how he could make fast money without stealing. Very soon, Mulenga Sata will be accompaning James as a business partner with the Chinese. Lets wait and see.

  35. #47 DUDU – That is to be expoected. What will be SURPRISINGLY STUPID is if Sata just goes along with that kind of silliness without first arresting James – just to demonstrate that he can be trusted even if he is a bad toothpaste. HOWEVER, knowing Sata, what will bring him down FIRST is people around him – and that is definitely coming and will happen very soon. then aftr seeing that his chaps have let him down, he will then let go of all this moral positioning and look after his own personal pot. The begining of the end for the proverbial cookie!!

  36. Please bloggers let us not cross the bridge before we get there. We all don’t know what they will be discussing. Let us make comments after the luncheon.

  37. It is lucnh time not insults. He wants to explain his stance on the chinese investment which has been tarnished by certain sections of our society. Bravo PF

  38. Kaponyas, where’re you? Didn’t Sata say with his own mouth that he’d chase the Chinese! Now he’s dining with them! He has realised that Chinese investiment is worldwide and Zambia cannot do without them. Can someone lend this man some brains!!

  39. The Engineer( Australia):
You live in Australia and enjoying the development that the Country has achieved not because of the Chinese but good leadership. Yes there are many Chinese in Australia but do you think that Australia would tolerate the chinese if they behaved the way they behaved in Zambia? The Government in Australia is in control of the Chinese not the Chinese being in control of the Government. Look at the mines in Australia.-Maximum benefit to the Australia economy!
An ordinary miner getting a average annual salary of US$100,000 and the minerals that Australia mines are are almost those mined in Zambia. Please, SATA wants to correct things in Zambia so that Zambia again can be in the driving seat so that proffessionals like you can come back to run the mines properly

  40. The President wants chinese to continuie investing in Zambia but to the benefit of both the Chinese and Zambian economies. So Chinese will continue to work in Zambia but on different mode that is in win -win arrangement! I think this is clear. So let us support our President for decency and dignity to return to the Zambian people including the grand father to the engineer.

  41. Sata has realised that his comments during the visist to Zambia by the Archbishop of Canterbury did go well with the Chinese Investors this is the reason he is hosting a launch on for them. Every one going to China including USA so who is Sata to let Zambia be left out of the long que to China. Lets be serious the way we handle matters otherwise we shall lose out.

  42. its nice to blog whilst listening to old Rhumba on radio Presented by one MR BOYD MILIMO courtesy of UNITURTLE INDUSTRIES whilst HE MC WABWINO SATA is entertaining the Chinese investors. What a funny world. ALL ANIMALS ARE EQUAL BUT OTHERS ARE MORE EQUAL THAN OTHERS.WHAT IS THE ZAMBIAN GOVT POSITION ON LIBYA NOW THAT GHADAFFI IS NO MORE. LETS GET BACK OUR ZAMTEL FROM LAPGREEN.

  43. Whether we know or not what they will be discussing, the truth of the matter is that Europe is in a crisis and is looking to China for help! And Zambia doesn’t need the Chinese…PULIZI!!!!! What a campaign strategy!

  44. Corruption is starting now. From now onwards you wont hear Sata say anything against the Chinese. All these presidents start well but as from now prove me wrong about Sata

  45. What has happened to “better investors”…..The Taiwanese? To try and claim that Sata never said he would chase the Chinese is total advanced dementia, check your records you praise singers.

  46. A wise person is one who realises earlier that HIS route will not see him through to heaven while has time to repent. I can not laugh at U-TURN but commend it a swift realisation that gurantees salvation. Monks at UNZA would drink off throught out the semester but begin to fast 3 weeks before exams and we saw them survive and pass exams. Those who pessisted without ever visiting GULF ended up packing up as tourists. Bravo President, itsa good forum where can LAY cards on the table for discussion. I would do the same too.

  47. Sata is now saying ” China good”. Whe
re are his supporters who told us he will kick them out? We told you Zambia can’t do away with China but you chose not to accept this fact. Now that “The Great Leader” has embraced them you will now start chanting about how wise he is. Now go and buy some cheap Chinese pants to cover th
e nakedness you exposed in celebrating Sata’s victory

  48. Zambian president welcomes Chinese investors(AFP) –  LUSAKA — Zambia’s President Michael Sata on Saturday said he would welcome Chinese investors, promising to strengthen relations with Beijing, in U-turn on his pre-election anti-China stance.”When we were campaigning people were complaining about the Chinese and I promised that I will sort the Chinese out,” said Sata who hosted a luncheon for Beijing investors at the State House.”They are also going to sort me out and so we are going to use them to develop,” he said.Sata, who was elected last month is known for his tough stand against the influx of Chinese investment into the country, particularly in the mining sector, which he says does not benefit locals.

Just after browsing throughout the online world and meeting proposals which were not pleasant, I was thinking my entire life was done. Existing minus the solutions to the difficulties you have resolved all through your site is a crucial case, and those that might have in a negative way affected my entire career if I hadn’t noticed your blog.
