Kitwe City Mayor Chileshe Bweupe has pleaded with Mopani Copper Mines to increase its funding to the Wusakile outfit Nkana.
Bweupe, who is the secretary of Diggers Rugby Club, said this when Mopani Chief Executive Officer Danny Callow who paid a courtesy call on him at Kitwe Civic Centre.
He said there is need for Mopani to invest more in the legendary club and help the team improve its performance on the local soccer front.
He noted that with proper sponsorship Nkana has the potential perform well in the Super Division and reclaim its lost glory.
“If Mopani just invested a little bit more in Nkana, the team has the potential to do what their city rivals Power Dynamos have done (Winning the Super League),” Bweupe said.
“It’s a matter of fact that sporting activities in the city had been adversely affected by lack of proper sponsorship and even clubs like Nkana Red Devils and Diggers have been negatively affected,” he noted.
Yes Nkana need capitalisation, already the team has produced top scorers, Edward and Sate Sate. After watching this year wallop ZANACO at Nkoloma, for once it was like i watching Barca, as ZANACO were just cahsing their shadows, kudos also go to Linos, he is slowing getting into the footsteps of the great Moses Simwala
I agree with the mayor, but the club needs more than just the sponsorship. The Nkana stadium which is in the most deplorable and dilapidated state since its inception, needs to be closed right now and refurbishment to the entire stadium commence immediately. This used to be the pride of not only the Copperbelt, but Zambia as a whole. For whatever profits Mopani is making, they should follow in the footsteps of then ZCCM who repaired stadiums, roads, townships, schools, recreation centers etc in the spirit of social justice.
Poor zambians always asking for free things
Education is key to development.Mr.Mayor you have no business begging what you need is a city Government going somewhere,Mopani needs to be paying their local taxes to the Kitwe City Council
Your worship, thats the spirit. Keep it up man.
Tough one. The Mayor can also do some behind the scenes lobbying of the mines company. At his level, it is not enough for him to be stating the obvious. Everyone knows that more sponsorship is needed. The Mayor should be coming out with pronouncements of what he has done about it, like he has lobbied, or raised money here and there etc. That is what leadership is for.
