Inspector General of Police Martin Malama
Inspector General of Police Martin Malama: To issue Statement on Tuesday

INSPECTOR-General of Police Martin Malama says he has nothing but respect would for former President Rupiah Banda who described him as ‘silly’ for issuing an international arrest warrant for his (Mr Banda’s) son, Henry.

Dr Malama, a devout Christian said his cultural, traditional and Christian values do not allow him to answer back to elders, even if they insult him.

“I have great faith in our traditional and cultural values. Above all, Zambia is a Christian nation. So, I chose to remain silent,” Dr Malama said adding, “I note that Mr Banda is the same age with my own father.”

Dr Malama was reacting to Mr Banda’s angry outburst regarding the arrest warrant issued against Henry.
The former President on Wednesday described police action to issue an arrest warrant for Henry as “silly.” The fugitive was recently spotted in Kenya.
The former President said he would address all matters relating to his sons during a press briefing planned for next week.

But the question about the whereabouts of Henry, who the police are pursuing and have issued an international arrest warrant over alleged criminal activities, prompted Mr Banda to respond, saying it was “silly” for the investigative wings to embark on such a move.

“He is silly whoever issued it. He (Dr Malama) the head of police, is supposed to be protecting Zambians instead of inciting people,” Mr Banda said.

Mr Banda earlier said he was saddened by people who were trying to create an impression that Henry was a criminal.

On Tuesday, Dr Malama appealed for cooperation from 190 Interpol member states to help in tracking Henry down.

Dr Malama said the police had notified Interpol about allegations against Henry.

  1. You are right sir. Keep up the good works. With you in the lead digging up the hidden treasures, Zambia is yet to enjoy more. If God be for you, tell me, who shall be against you?

  2. Sorry IG, you are a victim of ridicule by association. Your actions are predetermined by other parties, more like a muppet show. Otherwise as an individual, your cultural respect for elders is much appreciated.

  3. Just sue the old baastard for charecter assassination. His immunity does not extend to insult innocent citizens, the foool

  4. Of course Banda is going to defend his son. I would do the same. But he should respect the professional and let them do their job. No one has convicted Henry, he is just wanted for questioning. He is either guilty or has no regard for the Zambian law. He seem to think he is above the law.

    • kulk4471 on April 24, 2009 yes bcuseae they use dollars all over europe dont they? If your going to talk about europe use the right currency at least

  5. Absolute maturity and hood manners, as always! And it is asid that it’s better not to argue with such a type  else people may not notice the difference!

  6. good step, now RB is looking like a fo.ol. let him expose his stupi/dity. soon society will check who is a wise and who is not. if RB thinks his son is not a criminal let him bring him out.

  7. I am inclined to agree with “ndate minyoi” @#4 that IG Malama is a victim of ridicule by association. Malama’s actions are predetermined by whims of Sata, Kabimba, Kambwili, Sebastian Zulu and their external appendages in the form of Mmembe, Fr. Bwalya, Mutembo Nchitu. For instance Police harrasment of Daka and Mwale in Msanzala and Malambo constituencies stems from Sata’s instructions. Apparently, Malama’s cultural respect for elders is in serious doubt because his moral status has been dented by a promiscuous life style as graphically confirmed by a photo with Police Spokesperson Kanjela – a pattern of behaviour only condoned by the Catholic Church. The political cadre IG Malama has been prophetically warned that his profession lasts with Sata’s short-lived life-span.

    • imwe muli na dirty mind chabe. what life style is being comfirmed by a picture? Boss, i do not know what you are thinking about elizabeth s eye brows and the ka smile in this picture.

    • Its sad that you included an innocent Church in your comment. Be real and know that you are not perfect. Malama is human and so is you. We are all sinners mind you!!!!!

  8. The publicity given to this case raises alot of suspicion. Dr Malama has put the entire world police on alert for one person perceived to have made deals while his dad was a Zambian president. The explanation is that Dr Malama is just instructed to deal with certain persons. This country has criminals who are appearing in the Auditor Generals reports awaiting to be taken to court. Henry is getting the prominence because they have no way of getting at his dad. Alot of dollars will be spent persuing the youngman, when infact this can be done quietly and professionally.

    • if he’s not guilty, then y not jes come out of hiding?? y is he on the run? u should be thinking instead of making senseless statements!

  9. RB afunika kumu unjika kwachimbokaila kuti azibe that he is no longer president.at his age he should choose words to us when addressing people in authority.malama next time ukachiyenke chimambala.

  10. Mulena JJ you are spot on. Please people in the know, how do people mentioned of wrong doings in th Auditor’s Report dealt with? This mobilisation of the world police force on Henry is too much and definetly smacks of a blantant attack on the ex first family. I will confirm this witch hunt if those mentioned in Auditors Report are not in court next week. Ba Malama be professional. Ba Sata naimwe your subordinates cannot do their jobs because you are too much of a bully and highly unpredictable. You are too much of a micro manager. Kano fyonse mube involved. The country is at cross roads and is at stand still

    • Obviously, you don’t expect Malama to mobilise resources against a thief who has just stolen a chicken. Henry’s name has been linked to multi-million DOLLAR deals. You can’t ignore that!

  11. for every comment a person need to have known clearly what was the question he responded. image how can you say he should say something which something to say if not asked this motional think will not make our country develop. i salute the IG for wise response

  12. Doc! Magnifying small issues ,he has even made these jeraboos in kitwe become big-headed ,ever talking about them on TV

  13. I think the IG did not even need to respond to RB’s outburst. Calling someone silly is not an insult. Zambians are just too sensitive. Henry is obviously on the run. The state must bring him back to answer questions, but the IG does not need to be discussing individual cases in the press.

    • You, my friend, are smarter than most people here. The word silly is often misunderstood. Silly is not an insult. The only point in favor of those who fall victim to this language kerfuffle, as many have done in this respect, is that it does not have a vernacular equivalent. But more importantly, I like your advice to the IG and all in his elk to stop processing cases in the press. Be professional!

  14. there is nothing big that henry has done to deserve an international manhunt, sata just wants to prove a point and malama is the tool.

  15. WELL DONE DR MALAMA RESPECT THE OLD FOOL WHO HAS NO RESPECT HIMSELF.DO YOUR JOB AND BRING HIS SON TO BOOK. CALLING YOU SILLY WONT CHANGE ANYTHING MOST OF US ARE BEHIND YOUR GOOD WORK. SHOWS HOW WELL YOU WERE BROUGHT UP BY YOUR PRAENTS. RESPECT ELDERS AS YOU WOULD RESPECT YOUR OWN. RB SHOULD ADVICE HIS SON TO COME FORWARD NOT PROTECTING HIM. NO ONE HAS CALLED HENERY A CRIMINAL AS RB SAYS ,IS IT BECAUSE HE KNOWS HIS SON IS GUILTY ? THE TRUTH IS THE GUILTY ARE AFRIAD AS THE SAYING GOES, THAT IS WHY HENERY IS ON THE RUN. RB YOU ARE THE NEXT ONE TO ANSWER CHARGES JUST PREPARE YOURSLF. INSULTING DR MALAMA WONT HELP YOU IN ANY WAY. FOR THE SAKE OF ZAMBIA PLEASE RESPECT YOURSELF IF YOU WANT THE YOUNG TO RESPECT YOU. YOU ARE OLD ENOUGH TO KNOW THIS, YOU WONDER WHY YOU WERE VOTED OUT ?

  16. No one is above the law,and if someone is innocent there is no way to be running ups and downs.Dr M.Malama you are just doing your duty,so there is no way for someone to insult you and you are doing it for benefits of the ZAMBI8AN PEOPLE.BRAVO

  17. RB should keep his mouth shut, if his son stole nothing why is he on the run??
Dr Malama, you are in charge deal with Henry accordingly and just ignore RB
He is just like any father trying to protect his son
The Banda criminal clan managed to do a lot of damage to Zambia in just 3 years
If anything they stole too much by short selling national insititutions ,, bet thats what Chiluba was advising him ,,,steal, plunder, scum, rob the nation my fat friend,, look at me l got away with it.
Make any example of RB, he will not be the first former head of state to do time

  18. Is being called silly an insult? Suppose Dr Malama was being silly, what other word can you use? I don’t get it?

  19. You people in Zambia, is it true one of GBM`s daughter has been sent into foreign mission. In Namibian. No relevant qualifications. That is nepotism. Let`s not pretend to correct mistakes of the past and yet we are only creating room for ourselves. Dr Malama, I remember meeting you at Parklands in Kitwe and I was impressed with your professional conduct when you were CB police chief. I am now affraid that you will be compromised by politicians that appointed you.

  20. @23 The kimbanguist!

What is silly about issuing a warrant for this fugitive Henry, if it was any thief you would keep quite, but since he is a privileged thief you see it fit for the thiefs father to call the IG silly
If anything that’s a very silly language for RB use, Seeing he is the former President
How dare he calls the IG silly, maybe that is tolerated in your household but it’s rude to call a big man like Dr Malama silly, how do you think that says to his family
How do you think your kids will be treated in the school play ground if you were called silly in the national press,, please stop to pretend to know it all or accept all just cos you are in the Uk

  21. I think the new government has gotten its prioties upside down. We are not seeing improvements in township roads, hospitals still filthy and no drugs, garbbage is allover the townships. We are not seeing the anticipated change except the numerous commission of enquiries which are just eating up all the little money that was left by MMD.PF government pls priotise development or you wont have a second term and we don’t want a line of projects before elections because Zambians can’t be cheated. We are too wise.Wake up.

  22. @ 26 Mary

PF has only been in govt 5 months, you don,t really expect them to achieve everything you want in this short period.
Give the time and you will see what improvements or disservice they do to our county.
ONLY THEN CAN YOU JUDGE THEM

  23. Good move ba IG, you have actuaLLY WON THE ARGUMENT, OLD MAN SHOULD BE EMBARRASSED THAT HE DECIDED TO PERSONALISE SOMETHING YOU ARE DOING IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL CAPACITY!!!

  24. IG Umwipwa, the best way to respect elders in your position is to stop being used by politicians, wake up and be professional bwana.

Of course being used bt Sata to pursue people with a political motive is sillly, infact you did not need RB to remind you that this behaviuor is very silly you need to apologise to RB.

  25. Dr Malama has compromised his noble profession for a dish of soup. This learned man has exchanged his values for political expedience.  This policeman is being used by the PF government to expropriate private and foreign capital. Does this cop understand the trouble Zambia went through to attract foreign investment? A bank overdraft or a loan to refurbish one’s properties cannot be classed or exaggerated as theft or corruption. Citizens are being investigated for being rich. For the first in Zambia’s history we have a DPP with criminal cases before the high court and this DPP together with the IG are colluding to destroy Zambia’s judicial system. The Judicial system in Zambia has become an absolute joke – a laughing stock.

    • so u’d rather he leaves this Banda son, who happens to be thief alone right? let him go scott free right?? dont u thing this is when his noble profession will be compromised!! damn ur thinking!!!

  26. Rupia Banda has forgotten that he told us oneday that he was more worried about his sons than himself. He said that his sons had more deep hands in the goverment deals, so it will be very deficult for them to come out with clean hands out of it when the investigations start. He even emphasised that he was just more worried for his sons than himself.” The post in October 2011″

  27. The gilty ones are always afraid, Even if he trys to protect him it will not work bacuse just as I said ,Rupia exposed his sons how dirty they were in the october Post Newspaper.

  28. Henry Banda is on the run.if he is innocent why disappear? Bwezani you know where you son is and that you should convince him to come back and be investigated.

Dr Malama you are a professional carry on with you noble job.You are the best IG Zambia has ever had so far just prove your self that you are there to serve the nation honorably. Dollar

  29. Ther is a VERY BIG difference between being wanted by the Police to help them in their enquiries as a witness and being wanted for a felony as a suspect. The Police MUST state clearly whether Mr Henry Banda is a suspect in the crimes they are investigating or whether they want him as a witness.
To me, that is not very clear.

  30. Henry is in Sudan. His next destination is Gabon and eq. Guinea to watch the Chipolopolo boys win AFCON 2012.

Zambia has seen fugitives before, Aaron Chungu was one of them and he is back and was nearly a persec. Zambia is a circus.

  31. THIS INSPECTOR GENERAL OF POLICE IS VERY DULL INDEED. YOU CAN NOT BRING AGE IN A PROFESSIONAL MATTER. WHAT IT MEANS IS THAT HE JUST LEAVES ALL THOSE CRIMINALS WHO ARE AGE MATES TO HIS FATHER. AGE IS NOT AN EXCUSE AT ALL. IF YOU HAVE SOMETHING SENSIBLE TO SAY JUST GO AHEAD AND SAY IT OR ELSE SHUT UP. WE KNOW THAT YOU STRUGGLED TO COMPLETE YOU MEDICAL DEGREEE AND THAT IS WHY YOU DO NOT WANT TO PRACTICE AS A DOCTOR. SECONDLY, YOU STARTED SUPPORTING PF PARTY WHEN MMD WAS STILL IN POWER. YOU ARE A PF PUPPET.

  32. MEANING OF THE WORD SILLY:

    foolish: lacking common sense

    trivial:
    unworthy of serious concern

dazed or helpless: in or into a stunned, dazed, or helpless (Synonyms: ridiculous, childish, ansane, impractical, juvenile, stupid, daft condition)

  33. I have never ever seen such lithargy on the part of anyone who has the bollocks to call himself Inspector General. If anyone, and here I mean anyone including Christ, calls me silly for doing a job I am legally appointed to do, you can bet on it hell will break loose on them. And besides, I respect my own dad more than any silly piece of dirt out there even if they are as old or older than him. Maybe this Malama is trying to tell us something here, that his not sure his father sired him to he has to cast his net wider to cover all aged men around his dad’s age. You bet his mother was a whore!

  34. Well Done IG, Show our Former President that he behaved very much immature for a father of a nation. He should have encouraged Henry to cooperate with the Police. BANDAs think they are above the LAW.

  35. No Zambian will ever be prosecuted for theft or any other allegation in Zambia. The Zambian judiciary, have set this precedence through allowing late Kafupi Chiluba and 2nd wife Regina to go scotfree, Xavier Chungu and all the rest. Henry will never be prosecuted, watch this space, why did he go on the run? Was he tipped, if he was by who? The police, anti-corruption? We are not children to be blinded by these outbursts. It is pathetic to read, and my sorrow belies with the zambian poor who will continue to be robbed of any means in rights.
