A countrywide fuel shortage is looming in Zambia following the closure of Indeni, which is the country’s only refinery. The refinery has been shut down for routine maintenance.
So far, motorists are queuing for fuel in Kabwe, Kitwe, Solwezi,Kapiri Mposhi and Ndola, where Indeni is located.
In towns such as Lusaka, Chipata, Livingstone and Mongu, motorists have resorted to panic buying and stock piling petrol and diesel in view of the looming shortage of gas.
Some motorists in Kabwe confirmed the shortage of fuel in the former minig town. Others have also confirmed in Ndola and Kitwe where the situation is not expected to stabilise because Indeni is still not operational.
And the Tanzania Zambia Railway line operations have ground to a halt because there is no fuel to run trains between Kapiri Mposhi and Dar-es-Sallam in Tanzania.
But Ministry of Energy Permanent Secretary George Zulu said there was no fuel shortage when in fact, motorists in some towns are spending long hours waiting for fuel at filling stations.
The government is yet to announce the new fuel suppliers to Zambia after contracts for suppliers who were engaged by the previous administration were stopped.
?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
There will be no power outages no fuel shortages in 90days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If there is no shortage why are motorists queuing for fuel? We need answers from government!!!
Fire the energy minister for lying!
When ZWD broke this news yesterday some die hard PF cardres including this site did not agree. You call ZWD pro HH BUT Now You see that they only report the truth.Ukwa needs a serious advisors! How can you donate m/meal in the house and let your own children go begging in the street. Just what is happening in our country??? imbalancing kwena…
something is wrong………..routine maintence at indeni for the past couple of years have taken place in October……….anyway as for me…i still walk so no drama
Can some one rush to Malawi and buy the fuel back!!! Hahaha!
Its a routine maintenance and people should not panic. We have enough buffer stock in those storage tanks at indeni. People always panic when Indeni shuts down and buy fuel in bulk hence shortages in some feeling stations. Propaganda pa Zed as usual.
May I suggest you read the article again..THERE IS NO FUEL! simple as that, where is the buffer stock you are talking about?
This has got to be a joke right? You send $5 million dollars worth of fuel to Malawi and you also pay for its transportation and then you leave your country with a fuel shortage? Is this the man of action? Benzo funa kuzilangisa ku Malawi, behaving as if Zambia is the richest country in the region. Why didn’t South Africa, Botswana or Angola which all have better performing economies than us, not help out Malawi? This is incompetence of the worst kind. On top of losing all that money we should also lose 14 billion because Membe and Nchito simply dont want to pay back what they owe?
Man of action in a negative way in this case
It was a show off … And hoping to get more cruide oil from Angola.. Judge Chikopa in fuel OUT
as Zambian its time we had serious minds and start thinking outside the box. If not will continue to be tossed to and from by these media statements. Lets learn to research and give a benefit of doubt to everything till we are sure with the facts cause will continue to be excited by any political statements some of which have no substance.
mmmm. No Comment but this is seriuos
Donchi Kubeba!!!!!!!!!!!
Each time I read Zed news it is like picking an old newspaper. Why is it that we always have the same problems recurring without even a hint of change of strategy to mitigate it? Incredibly dumb state of affairs year in and year out…
Exactly my point Kalok. Paradigms have not shifted at all, and therefore you can use a predictive analysis to foretell what kind of 50 years lies ahead of us. Nothing!
PIPO OF ZAMBIA SHOLD NOT PANIC ON FUEL AS VERY SOON WE SHOP BE GETTING OUR FUEL FROM NEIGHBOURING ANGOLA AND NOT FROM IRAQ OR KUWAIT.JUST WAIT A LITTLE BIT AND YOU WILL SOON REAP THE BENEFIT FROM THE PROMISES MADE BY THE PF GOVT.WE SHALL NOT BE WAITING FOR SHIPMENT OF CRUDE OIL TO DOCK IN DAR OR DURBAN AS OUR HAULAGE TANKERS CAN BRING THE FUEL FROM ANGOLA WITHIN A COUPLE OF DAYS ONLY.YOU MUST NOT FORGET THAT WHEN A NEW GOVT TAKES OVER IN ANY COUNTRY IN THE WORLD IT WOULD TAKE A YEAR OR SO BEFORE THEY CAN CORRECT THE MESS THAT THE PREVIOUS GOVT HAVE LEFT BEHIND AND FOR ZAMBIA IT CAN TAKE A BIT MORE TIME AFTER THE MMD SIPHONED ALL THE RESOURCES THAT ZAMBIA HAD.PLZ DONT BLAME PF GOVT AND THE PRESIDENT SATA .KEEP COOL AND RELAX YOUR GOVT IS WORKING VERY HARD TO BRING SANITY IN ZAMBIA
I do not agree with article . am just from the filling station and one is pannicking. Its Just business as usual . can you report facts lusaka times
no one is panicking
Out of the wind, sun, water, and geothermal eenrgy, all of those are renewable, and none are fossil-fuel based. If you’re referring to the four most COMMON eenrgy sources used today, those would be coal, oil, natural gas, and nuclear fission. None of those are renewable, but out of those, nuclear fission is the one that doesn’t consume a fossil fuel (it consumes uranium, not any form of organic molecule).
Indeni closed for routine maintenance or the tanker is yet to dock in Dar?? From what i read yesterday i understand the Ministry of Energy and Water Development Permanent Secretary, George Zulu, confirmed yesterday that the temporary closure of Indeni on Sunday was because one of the ships was delayed in docking.Report facts ba LT check your previous article on the same fuel shortage
lol.. but where are the cars? why ifibudiza fya yellow?
Just the other day, some cadres were throwing insults at the ZWD for bringing up the issue of fuel shortage. Is the country in the right hands?
Lets not panic people..We can all go and fill up our cars in Malawi
They have fuel, which we gave them by the way
Hahahahaha! You bet start off because they also heard you are running out!
RUMOUR MONGERING OF THIS NATURE CAN DAMAGE A COUNTRY! PEOPLE INTENDING TO DRIVE TO ZAMBIA FROM NEIGHBOURING COUNTRIES ARE NOW CANCELLING TRIPS OR CALLING SOME OF US TO ASSURE THEM THAT THERE IS NO FUEL SHORTAGE! LUSAKATIMES, FIRST OF ALL THERE IS NO SHORTAGE OF FUEL AT ALL. WHAT TRANSPIRED IS AS FOLLOWS:-
1. TAZAMA SOLD THE THE BOTTOM BUNCH OF FUEL (DIESEL) FROM ONE OF TANKS WHICH ENDED UP HAVING CONTAMINATES. 2. THIS RESULTED IN SOME RETURNS FROM THE OMCs AND CONSUMERS. 3. AS FATE MAY SOMETIMES HAVE IT, THIS HAPPENED JUST BEFORE THE FUEL IMPORTS PLANNED FOR BY GRZ REACHED ZAMBIA. THESE IMPORTS WERE THE STOP GAP FOR THE DELAYED SHIP. 4. SHIP DOCKED AND TAZAMA STARTED PUMPING THE CRUDE (MIX) FOR INDENI TO PROCESS. IN ADDITION IMPORTANTS ARE FLOWING IN! BLOGGERS IN NDOLA WE HAVE FUEL!
PARDON! THE SECOND LAST SENTENCE SHOULD READ, 4. SHIP DOCKED AND TAZAMA STARTED PUMPING THE CRUDE (MIX) FOR INDENI TO PROCESS. IN ADDITION IMPORTS ARE FLOWING IN!
No. (22) you the spokes person? Please advise so that I do not spend my weekend money on stock piling gas! Money can be used for other priority areas!

Why not just write your statement then put *screaming* at the end
Am sure Malawians are laughing at us now!!!!
No 14 MALIKOPO – I think you should have your head examined. I know you are one of those employed by the PF to be commenting in their favour even when the writing on the wall is so clear that this government is taking us nowhere. You think Zambian people are as foolish as you are! For how long are you going to continue blaming the MMD for all your inadequacies and incompetences, just for how long? This government is a big flop and I dont think it will last the first five years. The country has no direction under people like MALIKOPO whose thinking is so backward. Look at the issue of the judges, the government is yet to face the worst embarrassment ever due to taking things for granted and underestimating the oponents. Your president thought the judges had no rights, but now he is shocked.
Malabishi…….”.hw does u 4get whom does u knw?tel ukwa to interpret ths”.chakanga baka nkuku singa medze!

No 14 malikopo ,,,??????????????????
Let the Govt find fuel for us since they were in the lead to give some of our fuel to Malawi!
Nangu ulaichaila
If there was still gas in the tank, and the fuel pump is weak the car would stop running as if the car was out of gas. There is also the cahcne that when the tank has more gas in it that the pump can overcome a plugged fuel filter.Another thing that can happen if that the in tank filter has become blocked, causing the pump to fail. But if the sender in the tank fails most of the time the gage will read empty. But if the Gage in the dash fails, it may become stuck at any reading. The punch line is this, try replacing the filter first. If you do you may get another couple of years out of that pump.If you decide to replace the pump, make sure that all of the filters are also replaced. If you don’t it void any warranty on the pump and I hate to pay for labor twice.
