United Nations (UN) Resident representative, Kanni Wignaraja, has described North-Western province as a haven for high developmental potential in various economic sectors.
Ms Wignaraja said the vast natural resources in the province such as forestry, wildlife and the waters, among others, give the province high potential for economic development.
The UN Resident Coordinator, who was in the province to check on some of the National Protected Areas supported by the UN and refugee cessation progress at Meheba Refugee Settlement, said this when she paid a courtesy call on North-Western Province Permanent Secretary, Augustine Seyuba, at his office last evening.
She said proper packaging of the abundant natural resources such as the Zambezi source, rivers, waterfalls, national parks and many others in the province can be a very good and profitable tourism attraction.
Ms Wignaraja added that amazing rivers in the province can also be utilised to generate hydro-power that can not only supply electricity to people in the province but also be treated as an export commodity that could earn the country good revenue.
She further observed that the province could do well in scaling up hybrid livestock domestication that could improve people’s incomes and subsequently reduce poaching in Game Management Areas.
She urged the Provincial Administration to look at and plan for all these potentials and sell the ideas to significant potential private sector investors with resources to kick start the development engine.
In response, Mr Seyuba said it was the wish of Provincial Administration to see that development is up scaled in the province to improve the living standards of residents and the nation at large.
Mr Seyuba told the UN resident coordinator that just last week-end Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC) was commissioning the commencement of the construction of a hydro-power plant on the Kabompo River in the province.
He said his office would sit down with various government departments and strategise on how best to go about actualising the exploitation of the various economic potentials the province could provide.
Meanwhile, Mr Seyuba has commended the Nations for its interventions in various sectors in the province that have greatly contributed to uplifting standards in the province, such as provision of transport, equipment, training of nurses, training of game scouts, refugees programmes and education activities that are being supported by UN Agencies.

How do u say dirtiest town in the world? Visit some towns in India first.
Don’t take pollution there and destroy our natural heritage. Lumwana is already a nuissance.
The potential of NWP has long been known and documented and it precedes the era of independence. Despite being aware of the province’s natural wealth, KK and Kafupi purposely ignored the province for political expediency until the ascendance to power of LPM who opened up the province to massive foreign investment. Today, Zambia`s economy is largely dependent on this region. Due to it`s proximity, there`s a possibility that the natural treasures found in Angola could have extended to NWP.
POSENIKO AMANO UKUFUMA ICHUMA MWEBO? DONT SKIM AROUND IMPORTANT ISSUES AND POLITICISE THISÂ
What a delicious fish! roasting it on chacoal hmmmmn na chipolopolo amakula yanshi ukutamba.
this persons microscope n brain is dwindling…what good things can come from that province..”baloshi land”(land of witches)…dont play with peoples minds to make them believe they can sustain themselves…what you tabulated can never sustain an economy without other major resources….
NOTE TO SELF: Add North Western Province to the bucket list of places to visit in Zambia.
I think as Zambians we need to learn to travel to other regions and appreciate the cultures that make us a country. Knowing people from other tribes in Lusaka/Ndola/Kitwe and all urban areas does not do us justice.
For those of us who have travelled extensively, we see beautiful places all over our nation. Each province is unique in its own ways. Yes, NWP is beautiful but needs development.
thats why Zambia needs a serious govt not these jokers ..
@ 7 cycle mata, Ubuloshi is practiced by all the Zambian tribes. In fact it`s attributed to and transcends Africa as a continent. It`s been part of human history as a whole. Can you point to a province which is devoid of this practice? There are stories about witchcraft everywhere, in NP,LP,CBP, SP, WP,EP CP etc. Stop practicing jealousy, hate and tribalism, you are being counterproductive. No wonder we are going in circles. People like you only see things through the lens of tribe. By appreciating and recognizing everyone, irrespective, only then can we prosper as a nation. We need unity of purpose in diversity, Abash BIGOTS !
