Charcoal business booms as power outages continue

Charcoal Business is thriving following the increased electricity load shedding by ZESCO.Charcoal businesswomen and men of Lusaka’s Kalingalinga compound say they have taken advantage of the ZESCO power outages.

The Zambia Environmental and Management Agency has since expressed worry over the increase in charcoal trade as it contributes to deforestation.

The Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (ZESCO) attributed the increased load shedding currently being experienced in the country to a power generation deficit of 250 Mega Watts.Zesco Managing Director Cyprian Chitundu earlier said that there is an increase in the demand for electricity due to the cold weather and increased wheat farming activities.

Zesco also blamed the deficit on increased mining, industrial and agricultural investments.Despite this increase, there has been delayed investment in the company’s transmission distribution systems.

Residents in Chipata yesterday said there was need for government to seriously find a lasting solution to the continued power blackouts as they negatively affect the economic growth.

  1. PF catholic Bemba policy. Depletion of all natural resources by year 2021. Trees make bushes and villages. The whole country must be developed into a town with no bush by cutting all trees. We envisage to have a country free from witchcraft by making sure there are no trees to use for herbs. No one should live in village pole and dagga houses. We are also making sure that farming is discouraged by reducing prices of farm products e.g. Cotton from 3500 kg to K1600/kg.

  2. i wonder why ZESCO are putting the blame on mining investment.these guy were sleeping not until recently they realised that the world will never be the same;development is cardinal and they needed to forecast and plan effectively for expansion….whats wrong with these guys kanshi? improve on you new hydro power construction and curb this shortfal……i.d.i.o.t.s

  3. This there way of empowering the nation by contributing to deforestation. What a short sides lot!!!

  4. We are messing with our Eco-system. The impacts of environmental degradation resulting from deforestation will have disastrous consequences to our economy. If we have a deficit of power, why are we exporting power to Botswana and Namibia? I can’t understand the logic behind that.

  5. I wish UPND Tongas would have been in power. HH would take all the development to cow dung province. Good policies indeed.

  6. very soon charcoal traders will turn into Mafia and there may be a situation where charcoal traders resort to sabotage in order to keep ZESCO inefficient and the charcoal business booming

  7. That’s what Ukwa CNP was talking about in Brazil when he said we don’t need donor funding but technology :) PF needs charcoal technology! From cooking on stove to cooking on ‘mbaula’. What a lost cause – but any way, you get what you vote for

  8. #1, I PARTIALLY SUPPORT YOU ON YOUR CONCERN ABOUT OUR NATURAL ENVIRONMENT. WHENEVER, I VISIT ZAMBIA I NOTICED A LAMENTABLY HIGH RATE OF DEFORESTATION. THERE ARE NO TREES ALONG ALL ROADS AND THIS IS IN FULL VIEW OF ALL GOVERNMENTS INCLUDING PF. THE FUC.KING QUESTION IS, WHAT IS OUR COAL DOING? COAL IS AN EXCELLENT DOMESTIC FUEL. WHY CAN’T IT BE USED IN DOMESTIC HOMES INSTEAD OF CHARCOAL. I HAVE BEEN IN BOTSWANA- THEY USE COAL IN HOMES. IF FINISHING OUR FORESTS CAN’T BE STOPPED EVEN AFTER THE VISIT TO RIO+20 BY OUR PRESIDENT CAN’T BE BANNED THEN TAX-PAYERS’ MONEY HAS BEEN WASTED ON THE TRIP. THE GOVT MUST STOP THIS DENATURING OF OUR NATURAL ENVIRONMENT IMMEDIATELY. COAL MUST BE DISTRIBUTED TO ALL CORNERS OF ZAMBIA FOR USE IN HOMES NOT ONLY INDUSTRIES.

  9. #1, WHAT I DON’T AGREE WITH YOU IS YOUR THINKING THAT IT’S ONE OF PF’s DEVELOPMENTAL POLICY. I WOULD HAVE AGREED WITH YOU IF YOU HAD SUGGESTED THAT PF SHOULD HAVE BANNED TREE-CUTTING IMMEDIATELY IT CAME TO POWER IN ORDER TO SAVE OUR NATURAL ENVIRONMENT. THEREFORE, THEY HAVE ALSO INHERITED THE CARELESS ATTITUDE ON THE ECO-SYSTEM. EDUCATED PEOPLE IN ZAMBIA ARE THE MOST USELESS. THEY CAN’T COMPEL THE GOVERNMENT TO PUT UP VIABLE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTIVE STRUCTURES.

  10. #8 IS ALSO A DOWN-RIGHT IDI.OT. I AM PRETTY SURE THIS GUY IS HIGHLY EDUCATED. BUT IF YOU OBSERVE HIS REASONING ITS VERY SHALLOW. ILL-EDUCATED IN ZAMBIA THINK BETTER. I AM NOT GONNA WASTE TIME GOING THROUGH AN ENDLESS EXAMPLES OF POOR THINKING BY HIGHLY EDUCATED MEN AND WOMEN AND BRIGHT EXAMPLES OF WHAT FORM 3s AND FORM 5s HAVE HAVE INTELLIGENTLY DISCUSSED AND EVEN IMPLEMENTED.

  11. ..BUT ONE STUPID THING OUR HIGHLY EDUCATED PEOPLE DO IN ZAMBIA IS TO REFOREST DEFORESTED LAND WITH EXOTIC TREES AND NOT INDIGENOUS TREES. WHILE UN EDUCATED PEOPLE FARM ORGANICALLY.

  12. But this is just so embarrassing that a country like Zambia with so much land, water, sun and air can be struggling with Energy solutions. Mines use a lot of electricity why cant some of the revenue generated from the mines construct something

  13. The one way to deal with deforestation due to the unreliable other energy sources is to monitor and strictly control the charcoal processors.Laws such as cut one tree, plant five and nature them to maturity should apply. How about the use of biogas?Basically, every septic tank is a potential biogas or DEWATS.Zambia has almost 365 and 1/4 days of sunshine. Is that not a blessing enough to a healthier energy source? Why cant we plan for the future and not only for the present?

  14. Why should there be load shedding when ZESCO charges so much for electricity. Please ministry in charge of the forests or enviroment, let ZESCO, pay for this deforestation coz people are forced to use charcoal. Poor managment at ZESCO, replace them!!!!! Amambala

  15. There must be an alternative to cutting down trees. We are going in for a bad future if these trees are cut at this abnormal level.GRZ must introduce something new.

  16. All the rubbish we see in the streets can be turned into biogas. Sugar cane waste from Nakambala can be turned into briquettes for use in cooking and of course solar power can power every home in Zambia. Instead of insulting Tongas, we should be encouraging them to produce more cow dung as an alternative source of organic fertiliser as well as a domestic fuel. But of course you need somebody with a vision to bring all this to fruition, not just one who is good at empty populist polemics to fool the gullible and tribally inclined.

  17. We need a comprehensive sustainable development plan. Our energy policy needs a paradigm shift. I have been researching Zambia, South Africa, Kenya, France, South Korea, Brazil, United States and United Kingdom’s global green growth policies for seven years plus. Zambia is blessed with a big country with all we need for the size of population. Our youth career deficit and general unemployment would be swallowed up and our GDP boosted if we design a global green growth development strategic plan. (our own). The Sun, the wind, the land and the rain will pay our bills, We just need to negotiate with the above. My masters is in sustainable development. I am seeking Zambians who are serious about this topic. My email is [email protected]

  18. I cling on to listening to the news broadcast lecture about getting free online grant applications so I have been looking around for the best site to get one. Could you tell me please, where could i find some?

  23. Well, if the Charcoal is so essential to the economy and the government is worried about the deforestation effect on the environment, they should be thinking of importing this charcoal at a subsidized rate abroad while tackling the problem…that way, it is a win-win situation for all.
