Senior Chief Shakumbila of the Sala people of Mumbwa has advised his subjects not to sell their cotton for any amount below K1,600.
Speaking to ZANIS in Mumbwa today, Senior Chief Shakumbila said farmers will regret if they sell their cotton at the price ginners were offering because the crop was too expensive to produce.
He warned that he would not tolerate any buyer in his Chiefdom who will exploit his subjects by offering low prices.
The Senior Chief was reacting to some farmers who have started selling the cotton to brief case buyers, saying they are desperate for money.
He said farmers should not panic but wait until the parties involved in the cotton prices conclude the matter.
Some named ginners are alleged to be buying cotton at K1, 600 per Kg in Shibuyunji, Kabulwebulwe and Shakumbila areas and promise them to pay the difference if the price happens to be above K1, 600.
Last month, farmers in Mumbwa vowed not to sell their cotton if the price remains at K1,600.

This is good leadership and these farmers should not be desperate.

To much labour involved in growing cotton, farmers r usually eploited y sell yhe comodity at day low price
Unfortunately the global price of cotton has not been good for all ginneries. This is a problem for the farmers, govt and ginneries. Someone must take the risk. Farmers will definitely suffer. If the ginneries want to buy to stock for the downward fall in prices, then that is not fair. Govt must intervene the markets are not working. How about me buying at 3k/kg and stocking? Good business maybe.
This problem is everywhere .farmers in tanzania are in a similar situation
Maybe government could help in advising farmers in advance before the planting season which crops would be expected to attract good prices so that farmers decide what crops to grow as it was for paprika!Â
This is a global problem, on the international market the prices have hit bottom low. In Malawi the ginneries are equally buying at the same prices as ours same for Tanzania. To urge our local ginners to review the prices may be futile as they do not control the international market The only way would be for the Government to come in with subsidy like what has happened in Zimbabwe otherwise the farmers may just lose out.  Â
