Police tear gas youths at the army recruitment centre

Share

Police on this afternoon fired tear gas canisters to disperse scores of youths who protested for being left out of the Zambia army recruitment at the first infantry brigade in Lusaka’s Emmasdale area.

This was after the youths blocked Katimamulilo road with different objects forcing motorists to use alternative routes.

The youths who also lit fire on the road scampered in surrounding townships after police arrived at the scene to restore law and order.

Calm has returned at the military recruitment centre as police in riot gear keep vigil of the situation.

And some youths told ZNBC news that they have been angered by the turn of events and accused the army personnel of recruiting only their relatives.

This week Hundreds of school leavers turned up seeking to be recruited as regular soldiers in Lusaka.

Long queues formed at the Zambia army First Infantry brigade Headquaters in Emmasdale where the recruitment exercise for Lusaka was taking place.

The Zambia Army wants to recruit 800 soldiers from all districts in the country.

  1. This is so crazy, in other countries serving in the army is mandatory for every male who has attained the age of 21. but its funny looking at a situation in Zambia assets being wasted, infact serving in the army should be mandatory for every male Zambian 20yrs, and above this will reduce indiscipline and street vending in the country, and more to send to UN to carry out international duties, why Can’t the government think in those lines?

    • Kubantu takwaba kuwamya.. When doing National Service was obligatory, people started crying that there plans in pursuing other careers were being delayed by the same programme, forgetting that many benefited from it looking at the skills they acquired even if later on they left the army. See now?
“Tabasha baloona, ukabwelela umushi ukalala”,… Mandatory ricruitment not long time ago was condemned,,, that’s what you RE- propose??

    • You are comparing apples with impundu or masau,Those countries have high GDPs..is your Zambia which is being led by Grade 7 ukwa going to manage the wage bill? How much does it produce per annum? do you know the projected growth this year?and do you know that there will be a massive budget deficit by october cos of budgeted expenditure?ZNS carried by Kaunda depleted our reserves and had to be stopped and Ukwa has already depleted the $2.8 billion reserves left by RB cos of his Chimbwi No Plan and you want his to leave Zambia

    • ….Ukwa has already depleted the $2.8 billion reserves left by RB cos of his Chimbwi No Plan and you want him to leave Zambia broke and uncreditworthy like it was under Chiluba?

  2. Levels of un employment will continue to soar as long as we have hundreds of school leavers every year.Govt need to impliment seriuos policies which will help out in reducing unemployment in zambia..

  3. The number being recruited is not enough. 800 recruites in a country of 10 provinces entails that in each province only 80 are to be recruited. Now if we consider the number of districts in the country, it is 73 old ones plus the new ones, how many are they recruiting per district? It is mappet show, they are recruiting less than 10 per district. In my opinion they should not have advertised because people have travelled long distances thereby wasting a lot of money.

  4. Luckly my son did not even bother to join those long meadering human lines. He said even the best statician could fail to gurrantee him a genuine selection, and now the poor chaps who were ordered to submit ‘papers’ are being teargassed. Let the GRZ look at issues like raised by #1.

    • # 1 is comparing apples with impundu or masau,Those countries have high GDPs..is your Zambia which is being led by Grade 7 ukwa going to manage the wage bill? 5. No1. bongoz u are rite,,,its time that PF govt lured for grants to impliment such kind of schemes en those who dont want to go thru them they will be free ,,,to do other things,,,walasa!!!!

    • They are expensive even big countries like Russia are struggling with mandatory military training..Europe’s biggest economy abandon it in 2004 and you want impoverished to create a large public wage bill at the expense of other areas like education, healthy etc which are already underfunded cos funds are not enough and you are talking of a country under Chimbwi No Plan to do that? They should just sit down and creat real employment that will expand our GDP.National defense is funded by taxpayers, are you going to fund all the youths that will be in mandatory military training? are we at war?

  6. angered because army personeel are recruiting there relatives…well you cannot blame arm officials this was started by the president himself by recruiting his relatives….the water follows the stream

  7. The most marginalized human beings in Zambia are the youths and women. The GRZ fails to provide the youths with employment and choose to treat them this way. I wholeheartedly support the views of #1 bongoz. Women are treated no differently. Will the Zambia police ever stop brutalizing citizens?

  8. The good number to recruit at the moment is 15,000 the whole country. This 800 even per province is a small number, it should have been 1,500 meaning that each district would be recruiting 150. Compare 150 per district and the current 80 per provice, it is muppet show.

  9. what is sata saying about this, let him not keep quiet things are changing.C.N.P make a plan mambala before its too let.

  10. To correct the current situation it calls for visionary leadership capable of planing and implementing tagable national programs, with good understanding of macroeconomy and how to manupulate it to ensure funds are available for job creation ventures. I am not sure if PF is ready to be counted as such a govt with plans to attain that vision of more jobs for the youths. Pls PF handle the employment issue for the younths with care and seriousness it deserves. This call is much serious than supporting M’membe his K14billion case which has evry minister working tireless to ensure M’membe goes free of paying back money for empowering youths.

  11. Lusaka is the most densely populated city in Zambia. To recruit only 80 is something that can not be understood. Even armcor security recruits a bigger number than this every week..

  12. These are some of the realities of running a Govenment which some of the people in PF had no clue about. I noticed when some of these guys came to London that they were just chatting shit, they have no clue what was going on. Some of the seemed as if they were running an association of some sort.

  13. These guys in government are just waiting to consolidate their positions in govt before they can start stealing. Others who are seasoned thieves like Bob Sichinga have already started stealing. Come back home so they told everyone in London so that they could go to the political podium and tell people that during our rule all the Zambians living abroad have come back and the country is moving FORWARD. What Shit!!!

  14. The Anti Corruption Commission must be involved. Both Zambia Army and ZNS are very corrupt. Many of us very qualified and experienced professionals, University graduates applied for ZNS and yet non of us were recruited in ZNS except there unqualified relatives. They must remember that the Youths are the ones who voted for PF.

  15. I always laugh when most of you idiets complain that there are no jobs in Zambia! Jobs are plenty you swines! Wake up from your slumber and use the assets that God has given you! The biggest problem is that you always want to be used and then given $299 at the end of the month! This is very pathetic thinking country men! Use your brains you swines and free yourselves from shackles of indoctrination and poverty!

Why are you so lazy Zambians? In Zambia, everywhere you look, there is money! You dont see it but people who are coming from far east and europe they see it and chew it! Wake up!

  16. Most of those sch leavers are grade 12 drop outs. They should go back to sch and re write their exams. No sweet no sweat

  17. Atleast some youth is growing up very fast! Next time there are elections s/he will not vote blindly and out of emotions! Ohhh sorry, its ‘donchi kubeba’! Let me go and withdraw some hard currency from my the ATM! My account has just become active again!

  18. My be there is one thing which can be done, let this recruitment exercise be called off. Then set a clear testing criterion for all to see on ZNBC TV 2. This should include taking into consideration G12 certificates taking only from a set cut of point. then give these youths IQ or apptitude tests based on the results take a few. Again these test results to be published and subject to verification by Anti Corruption Commission. There after medical examinations followed by physical tests. Failure to doing this, there is a chance that some names from appropriate provinces will dominate in this recruitment exercise.

  19. sad…a sign of how the youth are desperate for employment, most of them do not have options but to try and join the army even if it’s tenth on the list of things they’d rather be doing

  20. I am not surprised that youths are annoyed now, i am sure 1 of those youths can get Sebastian Zulus job and do it better. Some of those fellows have very good papers lawyers included looking for a job  as a soldier. The old man needs to rest.

  21. Bamichenjesha!! This is the change that you voted for! Don’t complain! Mwalisamwa sana last year…. Don’t kubeba! Don’t kubeba! Mwaloba ilya uma!! Kikikikikiki !! Eya! Mwachenjela!! Viva! CNP!!

  22. It`s unfortunate that such the govt doesn`t have a plan in utilising this viable human resource. One of the projects the govt can undertake is road construction.Enter into public-private partnership.Govt can source funding for freeways from global investors.Lease these roads to them and allow toll gates to be setup as a way to recover their investment.

  23. The thing is that there is need to create more real jobs. But Zambians let us work hard than always waiting to be employed by a chinese for $200 . Change your mind sets.

  24. Sorry guys , just a misunderstanding on our part as PF. We thought the youths wanted tear gas, its now coming as a shock to hear they actually wanted jobs.

  25. upto now jobs have not yet been created!!! I thought the promise was 90 days! The youths voted for jobs in 90 days and someone should swallow pride and explain realities of employment creation!

  26. The sad thing is that even those who are working hard are not being given they money. Thinking of farmers in Kalomo, it has been more than a year since FRA got their maize, but no money in their pockets even when they deserve it. What could be the problem with this govt? May be they are looking at the names on the spread sheet and nothing like names from Muchinga. Just pay the farmers, what a govt. Why did you not do the same investigations in Mpala or Chisali.

  27. i wonder if u pipo putting the blame on govt to give youth jobs………..really understand what it takes to creature job….do u really think it one day thing………..

  28. Even a small fool like me can think better than u BIG FOOLS. Some of you are able to get reasonable income in a month. but wat think is Beers, Chalila naba GELO, to show friends that u work by spending unreasonably instead of investing in a small business to earn you extra income. some of the Zambians have won contracts n instead of performing the works all they think is to by a BENZ, BMW.

  29. US Zambians have a problem,we voted not bcoz PF was going to deliver o campign promises bt to change from the MMD know it All to any beta Opposition Party. PF knew it would do beta than MMD n wen campaining, It can not Show Economical graphs to People in da Streets like wat HH does. but use simple language’ MORE MONEY IN THE POCKET’. Unless ur a fool u dont expect PF to go thru our houses to give us money.
WE WILL NOT GO ANY WHERE IF WE CANNOT CHANGE OUR MIND SET. Even if GEORGE Bush was to be our President, with our thinking that working means ur putting on our TIEs and JACKETS, If it mean selling tomatoes like wat i used to, till the land( Farming) do it. YOU DONT WANT TO WORK HARD BUT YOU FREE MONEY BY JOINING LWESA SCHEME. Work up

  30. If SATA and MPOMBO where teargasssed in RB time who is SATA not to teargass unrully mebers of the public, even me i would do the same if i was a president of zambia

  31. Joining millitery I cnt never, unless muchifukushi!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Most of these guys joining da millitery r thos who hv failed to make it to university…..common, thos still in high sku work hard en let this b a lesson dnt depend on this career whch does not need thinkers bt danda-heads….. En 800 recruitees is a gud number, unless u guys wnt every1 to be a millitery man. We dnt hv wars to recruit such a huge no. As per ur demand. En to da govt plz conc. Plz tackle da situation UNZA is currently in, we wnt to graduate fast en leave 4greener pastures coz u’ve failed us.

  32. Thank you for an additional informative internet site. Where else may I get that kind of info written in such a perfect approach? I’re a challenge that I am just now operating on, and I’ve been on the glance out for such data.

  33. It is hard to search out knowledgeable people on this subject, but you sound like you know what you?re speaking about! Thanks
