University of Zambia students are mobilising to match to State House to seek audience with president Michael Sata and address their concerns.

University of Zambia Students’ Union president Ali Tunkara says the students want the head of state to intervene in the impasse at UNZA.

Mr Tunkara has told ZNBC in an interview that students want the institution to be re-opened as soon as possible.

He says the students will be ferried in buses to state house this afternoon.

Irate UNZA Students on Tuesday night staged a demonstration over the delayed opening of the campus.

The students trooped to the Great East Road where they set ablaze tyres and firewood on the road blocking traffic.

But Education Minister John Phiri has called for dialogue and cooperation among all stakeholders at the campus.

Dr Phiri says government remains committed to the improvement of conditions of service and terms for University staff and the overall improvement of higher Education system in the Country.

He says government is saddened by UNZA students protest on Tuesday night in which they disrupted peace.

And Dr Phiri says his ministry has resolved that a harmonized approach to determine terms and conditions of service should be instituted to eliminate disparities in salaries.

The ministry has also put in place measures to eliminate causes of the huge debt accrued by Universities annually.

Dr Phiri also disclosed that the Ministry has studied and adopted all recommendations of the technical committee tasked to draft a policy framework for the improvement of terms and conditions of service for staff in higher learning institutions.

Meanwhile,President Michael Sata and First Lady Christine Kaseba were this morning among hundreds of mourners who attended the burial of the president’s sister in-law Andela Lombe Sata.

The president who arrived at Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe International Airport in Ndola about 10:00hours on Wednesday morning drove straight to Kitwe where he joined other mourners at our lady of Africa Catholic Church.

Speaking during the funeral mass, Father Raphael Chanda has described Mrs Sata as a cheerful woman who was also forgiving.

And the president, who was given an opportunity to speak in the church, thanked the people who had come to mourn with them. Mr. Sata says the woman being buried today was his sister-in-law.

Mrs. Sata 69, who died on 24th June, leaves behind ten children and several grand children.

  1. UNZA students before them had tried this and failed they only reached as far as the UNZA gates as ZP always called in eager  re-enforcements from Lilayi who know how to deal with them efficiently.

  2. These guys can at least make an effort to spell better. How can you have “match” instead of “march” in a headline?

  3. Well ruling is a business of people with big hearts and wisdom. I hope the president will show leadership on this matter as well.

  4. Why does this sound so de ja vu? 1996- 1997 UNZA closed for almost a year, students marched to state house ect, commision was set up to “study problems at UNZA” which was just a massive waste of time and theft of money. Believe me in another 15 years students will march to state house for some president to adress their issues… a society with no learning curve.

  5. Match on! Close the place and build from scratch into a state of the art university. While that is happening find employment for the languishing graduates.

  6. Aerial views can be very deceptive, ayi! So thats how the delapidated ‘new rez’ looks like from above???

  7. nalema navo ine ivi mwe. ndine waku zambia koma mavuto yeve ayi eee. UNZA mukavulila ull satrt ma protest yanu yau puba and the muvale futi, whats the use?

  8. WHATS WRONG WITH LT. REPORTERS ? ,THE STUDENT WILL MARCH TO .. STATE HOUSE AND NOT MATCH .WHAT DOES THE REPORTER MEAN ? ,PLZ LT EDUCATE YOUR REPORTERS .

  9. So everybodyelse is useless except the president? Is it a one-man show government? The surroundings of UNZA are dirty and a number of its buildings are derelect. You would be forgiven for thinking UNZA was in Juba, Southern Sudan. This is always the case if the Vice-Chancellor is an office VC. The problem over the years has been that UNZA VCs have been mere office workers that never go out to fund raise. Poor governments such as the Zambian one need to be helped by the private sector in funding higher education.

  10. Why put you hopes in a man who is well known to be a dictator? He has no change from Brazil. Wait until he unleashes his rabid dogs and then you will know. Those that were at Unza from atleast 97 through to 2001 know better. Under his reign as SG for MMD and min without kanyo, worst atrocities happened at unza, momas being beaten and made to nyawa in sewerage waters btn october airport and chemistry-biology schools will tell u what it is. A decade later u still worship the *****. MARABISH. He neither has the will nor the capacity to do so, PERIOD.

  11. One thing i have noticed is that the level of ignorance in this govt is overwhelming. At this rate, things will not be the same anymore, reppression will increase just to protect their status quo. And it will touch you who moderator trying to hide my comment. Take it or leave it.

  12. This is completely unnecessary if Government addressed real concerns. Evasion will not do!!!!!! Confidence in our party PF will only come if students can be allowed to demonstrate and our President listens. This matter should not be a State House issue, but that of the Minister of Education. By going to State House, students have closed all chapters of dialogue. Can UNZA students also grow up maturely!!!!!!! NEXT TIME USE CORRECT CHANNELS AND GROW UP.

  13. @Reflector . Tabs ati they will march to state Hse using Buses, hehehe kekekeke u ve made my day, I was equally wondering

  14. Now that is a great idea. Go to state house and leave people’s vehicles alone! State house is where the answers to your problems are not innocent, hardworking people whose cars you are fond of destroying

  15. Ignorance at its best. These fools should be sent back to their homes. All they know is protest after protest. How come they dont know how to cut grass or even make walking sticks at the so called university?

  16. I suppose they are protesting the fact that lecturers are on strike… as soon as the lecturers are back they will be striking to make sure their allowances are adjusted… next the unionized workers will be striking to demand that they also get a fair share of salaries BECAUSE they are the ones supporting those whose salaries have been increased. By the time this cycle is done it will be time start over…

  17. LOL in which country do people who are essentially children at a school demand things from the President? Welcome to the real world, being an UNZA student doesn’t put you on the same level as the head of state!

  18. Sad to hear about the death of Mama Lombe Sata the mother to Mubanga Sata the citizen appearing in court for impersonatimg as a member of the first family with his friend Colonel Inspector chakuti…… MHSRIEP

  19. Let UNZA remain closed for some good time, there are no jobs for the graduates. we spent 7 years instead of 5 years pa BENG because Sata’s MMD government indicated that the nation was not in a hurry to produce many graduates who just speak English and not know work.

  21. am lost how is the sister in law also called sata, isn’t she from the family of sata’s wife or could it be he was doing both?

    • I don’t believe that someone asking a question makes them “dull” – rather I believe your answer shows that you are rude.

  22. @ #32 THE DON, kwena you are so damn dull. don’t you know that you and your brother carry the same sir name and your brother’s wife who is your sister in law will carry your sir name. where are you from man. even a nursary school child cannot fail to understand this

    • So do you believe that EVERYONE who has the same last name MUST be related? Wow, I wonder who the dull one is? Not to mention, the word your after is surname, not sir name.

  23. Will the great UNZA survive wt ba CNP? Tode its lectures, tomoro its da students…shame o dis within da 9mnths of da PF being in govt.. Merit b given to da great), av never seen such in his 3yrs tenure.
