The United Party for National Development (UPND) has scooped the Livingstone Central parliamentary seat as counting continues in Muchinga and Chama North constituencies. UPND candidate Howard Sikwela was declared winner in the early hours of this morning after 11, 976 votes against 8, 318 votes of his closest rival Josephs Akafumba of the PF.
Late former vice President George Kunda’s son Howard has taken a comfortable lead with five polling stations remaining to be counted. Howard looks set to inherit his father as Muchinga Member of Parliament on after polling 3, 225 with Jeliaty Ntembwa of the Patriotic Front amassing 2, 446 from 37 polling stations counted.
And the Patriotic Front is tipped of scooping the Chama North constituency.
With results from 15 polling stations declared so far PF’s January Zimba is headed for victory with a comfortable lead of 4, 350 votes over Yotam Mtayachalo of the MMD who has polled 1,940 and Herbert Zimba of the United Independence Party (UNIP) has only managed 229 votes so far.
Earlier, MMD Muchinga province chairperson Frank Bowa conceded defeat to Qfm news with 19 polling stations left to be counted.
Meanwhile, Foundation Democratic Process (FODEP) Executive Director MacDonald Chipenzi has hailed all stakeholders for the smooth electoral process.
Good for PF. 2016 is around the corner, pull up your socks and fulfill your campaign promises.
The Kitwe PF Council has engaged bailiffs who are busy grabbing property from their cadres and other residents who owe the council a few kwacha.Â
This aint the tym too vote for pipo with fake promises. Congrates Livingstone 4 voting wisely. For the pipo of Chama, well… They are still used to lies even after almost a yr of PF being in power.
Pf better wake up.One would expect been a new party in power theu would have won atleast 2 seats.Their test of popularity is determined by how they peform along the line of rail were people are well informed.
Hu s stl voting fo 90dayz Chimbwi Chimbwi or mayb in English HYENA NO PLAN ni matuvi chabe chi mudala eish brown teeth
I am PF but this democracy is impressive. People are opening up, that you can receive and eat as much as is donated but still reserve the right to vote for candidate of choice. Congrats to us Zambians. Other African nations must learn something from us, where the opposition is doing well.
Wake up call to PF. People are increasingly expecting governments to be accountable to the people.
The score by PF is very good in livingstone (southern province and the tongas) and with that kind of trend, you can be rest assured of PF crossing 2016 with even lager margins. at least we can see some transparent elections in this Government which recomendable!
Does the analysis resonate well with some people who label southerners as tribal when they have voted for PF?Abash tribalism propagandist.
pf will soon be widely known for what they are. rubbish in a shining bag.
This is good democracy, I am PF and i have always wanted where a ruling party has less majority in parliament…..this is good…. collective or coalition governing is the only way to involve everyone to contribute effectively….Viva Zambians Viva PF……clean campaign no bribes reported from PF this is awesome, my Zambia my Country my PF my Sata…. Won one seat
At this rate thinggs are moving PF will kiss GOOD BYE in 2016. People are alert and will no longer be cheated like in the past. UNIP and MMD are the pnly two political parties that will in history of Zambia to have ruled longer the rest it will be just one or two terms. Given and GBM are not good campaigners they missed alot of important points and could not impress people.Thumps up to winners in the three parliamentary by elections. Its now back to work.
Lesson to Guy Scot the Chola Boy, you cant f0ol the people all the time. Next time there is an election, dont dish out money, Zambians are not dull.Â
#3 SA pliz let us refrain from insults bt instead let us debate issues.
But why this tribal talk? All MPs in Luapula are pf.is that tribal or its fine?then what’s wrong with UPND having all MPs in southern province? And why is this tribal talk centred on Tongas and Bembas? Can someone explain to me?The post must be ashamed of themselves for leading a tribal talk in their paper.May be the more we talk tribal the less we become allergic to it.
where did you see tribal talk? u are just bringing up something and trying to blame it on others!
A WAKE UP CALL FOR PF, WE EXPECTED THIS BECAUSE SOUTHERN PROVINCE HAS ALWAYS BEEN LATE MAZOKAS WINNING GROUND.UPND SHOULD NOT GET EXCITED BUT SHOULD WORK HARD IN HARMONY WITH THE RULING GOVT OF THE DAY TO REMAIN A STRONG OPPOSITION .
Zambia the real Africa. democracy at work. i think we have come a long way and we are getting better. tuli fye kwati ni ku America
This is a lesson to the PF Govt that Zambians cannot be fooled any more.Congrats to the opposition.
Viva UPND, congrats to mmd and pocket fillers (pf) these guys are determined to fill they pocket as per campaign. Lets vote pf out bane! Look how every govt office in lusaaka has being politicised by pf.now tell the pf fool to give the pipo that maize!
We are still voting on tribal and party lines that’s why MMD joined forces with UPND, which is still a concern for me.
Some *****s of this blog dont know how to analyse issues. These seats where MMD so PF has gained one and is only 4 seats away from having outright majority in parliament.
but it throws doubt on popularity of pf whichever way one looks at it
Congratulations to UPND. Now, where is Brian Hapunda?Â
Ma lubbish chabe. Pathetic Failures have managed to win a seat in the village??? We await a seat in town when one of them succumbs to AIDS soon.
Donchi kubeba has been donched themselves….I love Z!
This is enough proof that MMD or UPND can no longer beat PF, unless the form a pact. As parties let’s learn to stand on our own and know our stance. MMD/UPND had 11 976 while PF had 8 318 this simple mathematices if MMD and UPND stood as lone parties they should have divided the votes meaning they would less than PF.
UPND is losing grip coz it used to win in Southern Prov. without forming a pact. Now UPND is slowly sinking even in Southern Pro.
Thats what we call sense! Logic analysis would conclude that PF is gaining ground UPND is slowly loosing grip. 11 976 divided by two is equal to 5,988 so mathematically PF has won.
Your comment is not true for the past so many years Livingstone was held by Sakwiba of Liberal Party, so UPND has done well even though the turnout was not that good. It is not easy to root out a governing party with all their logistics. What ever you say it is congratulations to UPND. I hope they scoop all NW, W, Central by elections while they support MMD with North, Muchinga, Luapula and come together again in Lusaka as the MPs start kicking the bucket.
YOU MAY BE RIGHT , BUT EVEN THEN UPND WAS ALWAYS AHEAD OF PF BY WIDE MARGINS WITH OR WITHOUT APATHY. SEE STATISTICS FOR THE LAST THREE ELECTIONS ON ECZ WEBSITE. HOWEVER , CONGRATS UPND!
Captain Wamulima would have won had he been picked to contest by PF!
The count down is on, not even kneeling before my brothers and sisters in Livingstone and Muchinga could fool them this time. Indeed #17, watch one of these CNF Pathetic Fools MPs in town succumb to AIDS and Zondwe will kiss dust.
PF has made significant inroads in the UPND life line (southern Province). Tongas are slowly warming up to PF and the result in this by-election is encouraging.
I am actually shocked that PF got that close!!
Remember how long it took for the easterners to embrace MMD?
Furthermore, I liked the idea by Captain Wamulima to have championed for a stop to South African truckers carrying Vehicles through Livingstone/Zambia but instead use Zambian truckers which could have created employment in Livingstone as well as raising the much need revenue by local councils. For info. South African gov. does not allow second-hand motor vehicles being driven on their roads but alas, we have continued to allow RSA truckers using our roads freely at no charge.
Good for our young democracy. I salute all Zambians. Patria or muerte.
People who are saying PF has made inroads in Livingstone are ignorant of the facts. Those who know the population and voting pattern of Livingstone constituency will tell you that PF is the first ruling party to fail to grab that seat from what you may call a Tonga dominated party. UNIP used to whack ANC in that constituency, MMD and ULP beat UPND respectively. The people of Livingstone constituency always unite to beat a “tribal” party. Perhaps this time they had no option but to side with what they thought was a better choice between the two tribal parties.
These olden days are gone grand pa look at the numbers 12,000 for mmd/tonga tribal party pact and near 9000 for PF? Ba dala just imagine if there was no pact, PF would have easily taken it
Results only reflect the voting trend in the country, Southern province and Livingstone is still a UPND stronghold and it is expected to do well. One only needs to take note that the PF performed well this time around, getting over 8000 and losing by around 2000 is a good run.
For Muchinga, it was a sentiment vote, almost ritual inheritence by Horward. As someone noted, the transparency of the elections under the PF need to be noted and commended, no underhand methods were employed to rig elections. There is need to deliver on promises, be consistent in statements and advisors to the President being professional enough to help him project a Presidental image when he meets other dignitaries, dont fear losing jobs, please!!
@23 Ichalo Lifupa, minor correction: Second hand cars are allowed on South Africa roads. What the SA authorities do not allow are unregistered second hand cars from Japan, Malaysia, etc destined for other countries to be driven on their roads lest they “disappear” within SA. They say they are protecting their motor-car industry. As for trucks, many Zambian trucks carrying copper are a daily site on the SA N1 road.
Sorry @27 the last sentence should read …are a daily sight on the SA N1 road.
What a performance by PF…!!! Let us All be mindful that UPND had formed an alliance with MMD in Livingstone and beating PF by 2000 is nothing. Come 2016, PF will win the elections by even a greater magine. As for Chama, PF has now penetrated the entire Eastern Province. It is now a no go area for MMD and worse more UPND. How come UPND never featured a candidate in Muchinga and Chama…???
Fair and win-win situation. This is a good check to PF! I love my country.
So the thirteen million kwacha bribe did not do the job! what is the vice president doing at the moment?
So, PF have penetrated Eastern Province. Which means they will now control Copperbelt, Luapula, Northern, Muchinga and part of Central whilst UPND will only control their tribal inclined province which is Southern Province. Therefore, come 2016, their performance will still be pathetic!
Viva pa Bwaaatooooooooooooo……………….!!!
PF won chama cos ts a bembaland. tribal
Why is it that anytime PF looses its on tribal grounds? Perhaps they preach the tribal message themselves. I bet come next election someone from PF will preach the barotse breakaway!
The Story of Titanic begins
Well balanced result but presents food for thought. 1- UPND is still strong in southern province despite PF govt bribery of voters and usage of all govt facilities. 2- PFs lack of fulfillment of some basic promises is slowly being felt by the party and will be a thorn in the flesh as govt hasn’t got any solutions to fundamental vexing issues such as cattle management issues, low cotton prices, road maintenance, youth unemployment and in part BRE64 issue. Added to this Miles Sampa’s views about Tongas will not wash away easily for ages to come, PF will be punished for that in years to come. Overall performance implies the hu-ha euphoria that ushered PF into power is quickly declining un the country, perhaps a realosation that the nation was duped.
WHICH CANDIDATE(PRESIDENTIAL)IS GOING TO STAND ON THE PACT(UPND/MMD) IN 2016? PF HAS GAINED POPULARITY IN LIVINGSTONE CENTRAL GOING BY THE MARGIN IT HAS LOST WITH. UPND NEVER USED TO GO IN PATCS TO BEAT PF, ESPECIALLY IN SOUTHERN PROVINCE, UPND IS LOOSING POPULARITY HOW CAN THEY AMASS 5,988 AGAINST PF 8,318. SO HAS HH HELPED OR DESTROYED ONCE VIBRANT PARTY?
well done Lusakatimes for keeping the nation informed gd election results reporting. fair results i dont give a toss who wins anyway im happy with the democratic progress in zambia,
It is a message to the president and Winter Kabimba that the louder you speak the more people get irritated. Congratulations to Howard Kunda too, you don’t speak against widows carelessly and get away with it. God is the defender of widows. It is indeed a big lesson for PF well done Livingstone & Serenje!
28, mmd did not partner with ULP in Livingstone, it was PF/ULP Pact. Get your facts correct
Dooooooooonchi kubeba! chew their money bot dont yell them. they did it to MMD but now we are doing it on them> viva opposition.
MMD Have never beaten UPND in livingstone. Even when UPND lost the seat, it went to PF/ULP
Going by the results. PF has lost nothing but gaining something. As for Livingstone it was a well known factor that UPND will get it because MMD decided not have its candidate. But PF has made very good en-roads in Livingstone. As for Serenje sympathetic votes had to play a major role. PF has got one seat from MMD and neither UPND nor MMD has got the seat from PF. On Local government elections PF has scooped almost in all the wards that were held by UPND and MMD in North western Province.UPND should get worried because it still remains confined to one region. If you go by the result, PF that has gained.Failure for UPND not to have its candidates in all the three by elections is a sign of weakeness so does the MMD.
48 thats a very good and balanced analysis. Thats exactly what is obtaining on the ground
48 you are right PF has gained has one more seat meaning the opposition will have no leader to represent themÂ
Very practical analysis indeed.
11, 976 votes against 8, 318 IS NOT BAD FOR PF. POLITICS IS A GAME OF NUMBERS PIPO. THIS IS SOUTHERN PROVINCE PIPO AND GETTING 8, 318 IS NOT A JOKE. THIS IS WHAT PF NEEDS.
Good! Serves them right. In any case this democracy at work.
Let those who dont know be told that L/stone is a city just like Lusaka different from rural area which are highly influenced by the tribes. L/stone have all the tribes who are very informed about the current Zambians developments. So i see HH’s popularity rising, Pf should just work hard especially the president, Sata is a mess to the country. We look forward for a better country with sanity & guess HH can do far much better than our failled president.
congrats PF!!!, you are coming up in southern pronvince and for grabbing one seat from the opposition. But no more petitions because it costs a lot. pay unza lecturers if you have money
Literally, who has won and lost what is his? All the three seats belonged to mmd and now shared to each one. The area which used to be a no area for Pf has managed to give Pf some good # of votes(L/stone). Come 2016 u’ll prove wat i’m saying now that both UPND & MMD feel they stand beta chances to become presidents in 2016. Congrats to all the winners.
WITH ALL FAIRNESS I SEE HH BECOMING THE NEXT ZAMBIAN PRESIDENT & I HOPE HE IS VERY PREPARED TO LEAD THE COUNTRY THAN BASHIKULU, ZAMBIA NEEDS ANOTHER MWANAWASA IN FORM OF HH DESPITE THE POST WHO ARE BUSY TURNISHING HIS IMAGE FOR THE $14 BILLION. LETS SEE HOW IT GOES! ZAMBIA NOT FOR SALE!
TO SOME BOGGERS THE DIFFERENCE BTN PF & UPND IS THAT PF HAVE ZAMBIA IN THEIR HANDS TO LOSE TO OPPOSITION IS A BIG SIGN OF WEAKNESS. REMEMBER SCOT WENT TO L/STONE, SATA WENT TO L/STONE & CABINET MINISTERS KNELT FOR VOTES & MANY TONES OF MAIZE WERE CAUGHT IN L/STONE & OTHER TONES OF CHITENGES WERE DISTRIBUTED IN L/STONE & FORGETING THE PRESIDENTIAL COMMANDS TO IMPRESS THE PEOPLE OF LIVINGSTONE. MY PREDICTIONS ARE THAT EVER INDEPENDENCE PF WILL BE THE SHORTEST SERVING POLITICAL PARTY IN ZAMBIA BCOZ OF LACK OF COMPETENCE.
PF should have won all 3 elections.
Playing ground was not even, with Guy Scott and Sata campaigning on the ground, plus use of govt resources and money to bribe chiefs.
All in all it is good to see democracy at work in Zambia.
I like your objectivity which seem standard in your blogs on LT. Such as your mind are assets to humanity.Â
ONLY ONE TERM FOR PF & THAT IS IF THEIR ARE LUCK, PERIOD!
Mwaba Jr, Zambians are not dull except you. Even if one is a grade 2 drop out, one can easily analyse that combining MMD & UPND giant Political parties the margin against PF SHOULD have been higher than 2,500 more especially that Southern Prov. is a stronghold of Opposition MMD & UPND parties.
who has won in muchinga……..
Kunda-MMD
Infact PF is has tried in Livingstone. See the margin, i.e. 2011 elections and this this one. In 2011 PF had less than a 1000 votes in Livingstone, if I can remember correctly.
Congratulations UPND! Yes, democracy at work.
A cOmbined vote of MMD and UPND has beaten PF by 2000 votes. Who is doing fine? PF or UPND? I think people has made some inroads in Livingstone. Lets look at this, MMD&UPND got almost 13 000( meaning 6 500 each), while PF got almost 8 500. As you can see PF is a winner on a one to one basis. WELL DONE PF.
We gotten one from the opposition welldone PF.
Most bloggers here are so dull. What this result means is that MMD has lost two seats (Chama and livingstone). PF has gained one and UPND has gained one. Biggest looser MMD. UPND has always won Southern, nothing new there or to be really congratulated. MMD has always done well in Central so no big deal there. Now PF winning eastern or is it Muchinga, that is an in road. Congrats!!!!
Pathetic fools your days are numbered! Livingstone residents have taught the tourist attraction Lubinda a lesson. You were more sensible when you were in UPND now you are a complete FOOL!!!
Everyone got a cut. Fair enough.
@ # 7 you should know who occupies livingstone. My friend if you have never been there then go and see for yourself. By the way it is much more beautiful than Chinsali.Â
@ # 65 your analysis is plausible on the face value but you are wrong on one Point, Livingstone was won by  UPND when Sikota was a Member. It was won by ULP again under Sikota. In the last general elections it was scooped by MMD and UPND was third after PF. Now UPND has scooped it after a long time. Let us congratulate them.Â
A miss is as good as a mile. PF will never win a parliamentary seat in Livingstone until Kingdom come.
The essence of democracy. I just love how we have deliberated on the outcome of the elections. Truth be told is that I hope the MMD will cling onto the Muchinga seat because this was an emotional vote by the people for one of the deceased’s children. As for UPND, sadly and however it does not sit well with them, they cannot win a presidential election with one province. They will continue having MP based on tribe, but they need to step up to the plate and start infusing themselves even in the other 9 provinces. But congrats to all the three parties for their victory. This is good for democracy and I cant wait to see how the three parties fare in 2016. Job well done too to NAREP for fielding a candidate.
As a ruling party just elected into office PF should have won the cosmopolitan(multi tribal) L/stone seat but they lost even with their vast resources. The result shows that PF will find it difficult to win seats in urban areas where voters feel cheated by their lies. They also lost the Muchinga seat despite Sata personally telling off the winner’s mother to stay off politics an concentrate on mourning her husband. It’s clear that things are not working according to plan for PF. They reason why they challenged most of the seats won by MMD was to increase their majority in parliament. PF must up their game and begin to deliver on their promises otherwise things will get worse. As things stand right now voters see no difference, from a corruption point of view, between PF and the former MMD
As for NAREP, they are better off joining PF. So far they seem to be irrelevant to Zambian politics and their popularity is only in Chipimo’s head
1PF, 1MMD, 1UNDP, that is proportionate representation in Parliament. BRAVO, Zambia!! We need that for democracy. Congratulation to all parties. I wonder why we have a high propensity to insult people we ourselves voted for. For maturity lets refrain from insults and discuss issues that affect our people.
Fantastic web site. Plenty of useful information here. I am sending it to some buddies ans also sharing in delicious. And naturally, thanks to your sweat!
