Masebo to make Zambia most preferred tourist destination

Share

Sylvia Masebo

Newly appointed Tourism and Arts Minister Sylvia Masebo has pledged to make Zambia a preferred tourist destination across the continent.

Ms. Masebo says Zambia has numerous tourism attractions which need to be marketed to the outside world for the country to maximize gains in forex.

The Minister has also charged that she will endeavor to change the perception of tourism to encourage more local tourists.

Ms. Masebo says Zambians must begin to appreciate the tourist attractions and natural resources the country is endowed with and take up the challenge of promoting the tourism industry.

She has since further urged the media in the country to take an active role in promoting tourism locally and internationally to ensure that the country maximizes benefits from the industry.

  1. She said the same thing in mmd and now in pf.if we need to change pipo look after our country affairs not just party name with same pipo.more popcorn

  2. Total madness. Who will be sacrifised for Masebo. Sata creating a ministry without parliament approval.

  3. start by dropping those ridiculous fees for zambians and train immigration officials to smile at airports and other frontiers. they are really unfriendly. also please please advertise in major travel magazines and invest in a good at for bbc and cnn. most people still think vic falls is in zimbabwe! As a tourism sales professional, it is sad to see how poorly zntb markets zambia. Make it easier for zambians to invest in zambia by giving tax breaks and incentives. i was frustrated for two years till i moved back to the far east where more forward looking countries are taking advantage of the education and knowledge that zambia sponsored. Help us help zambia, mwe bantu!

  4. The only popular tourism remaining is “Sex tourism”, not going round taking pictures of hyenas. Masebo should watch documentary called “rent-a-rasta’, about Jamaican tourism, its free. Brazil is attracting million of tourists because of sexotourism, don’t even think of Greece. Masebo needs to introduce such thigh projects as she is good at it too.

  5. yes we have alot of ugly people to parade for tourism in zambia such , Nkandu luo, Sondashi, George mpombo, CNP Ukwa, mbesuma to mention but afew

  6. The increase in minimum wage noted today will result in pricing Zambia out of the tourist market as there is also a mandatory 10% service charge. It will also result in money in fewer peoples pockets. This together with the rules against quoting in Kwacha only is really discouraging tourism. It is not only about marketing!

  7. @4 you are right immigration officers at our airport they don’t smile allow the faces are serious or as if they fought with someone

  8. Local tourism will only take-off when Zambia has a sizable Middle Class. At the moment, very few Zambians have disposable income to waste on luxuries such as vacations. The number of Cabinet Ministers and MPs is not enough to sustain a vibrant tourism industry. For as long as this state of affairs continues, local tourism will forever be a pipe dream!

As far as foreign tourism goes, Zambia is decades behind compared to other countries in our neighborhood. If we can effectively form and fund “tourism wings” in our foreign missions, whose sole purpose is to sale our tourism potential to the outside world, I would endeavor to say Zambia would only be second to Kenya in Safari patrons. But cronyism and nepotism has killed any initiative in our missions. Good luck Madam Masebo!

  9. i am tired of these recycled politicians, with their lies and false promises. when is zambia going to wake up? iyo kwena ni dark continent!

  10. #16 I am tired of these recycled politicians too. This woman was in gvt, what did she accomplish then? Nothing. I don’t trust their false promises. We could have been the best destination during Zim troubled decade but we’re still worse off than Zim. Our cities are very dirty with street vendors and we don’t have much decent tourism infrastructure.

  11. Does anybody know if the electrification promised to Chongwe residents during the corrupt  and costly by-election to ensure this prostitute’s ascent to a ministerial position, has actually taken place? I guess with all the load shedding taking place, Chongwe residents are not missing out on much.

  12. Just wondering who is doing Sylvia. I wouldn’t mind doing her from behind. I am just saying!!!

  13. Masebo should clean the missions abroad, those who deal with tourism, some have out lived
their usefulness. e.g Washington embassy, you need young energitic people to spread the

    information.

  14. Dont be imitated with fake promises because she had once been in the MMD government and nothing was done.these people are making fool of you Zambians.what is needed now is for the people to benefit from the government they believed that it will work on their demands and changes their lives.Zambians have to be aware of such pretended liars

  15. oooooph! Sata has lost his dignity of a leader and the vision of the people of Zambia seems to vanish and lost without enjoying the fruits of the new government

  16. I CAN COUNT ON YOU MADAM MASEBO AND I AM VERY CONFIDENT THAT YOU WILL DO YOUR UTMOST BEST TO BRING MORE TOURIST TO ZAMBIA VERY SOON . MADAM MASEBO YOU SHOULD GET MORE AIRLINES TO OPERATE IN ZAMBIA LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL SO THE TOURIST CAN BENEFIT ON GETTING CHEAPER FARES. ITS IS GOOD THAT KLM HAS STARTED DIRECT FLIGHTS TO LUSAKA FROM AMSTERDAM AND CURRANTLY WE ARE ENJOYING CHEAPER FARES FOR INSTANCE I TRIED TO GET A BA AIRFARE FOR MY TRIP TO LUSAKA IN AUGUST AND IT WAS ALMOST OVER £900 BUT WHEN I COMPARED WITH KLM I MANAGED TO BOOK A SEAT FOR JUST £532 WHICH MEANS I HAVE SAVED OVER 2 THIRDS SO THANKS TO THE PF GOVT FOR BRINGING US HOME AT CHEAPER PRICE.WE WOULD LIKE YOU TO INTERDUCE AIR FRANCE AND LUFTHANSA SO THAT WE CAN FLY HOME WITH MORE MONEY IN OUR POCKETS, VIVA MASEBO.

  17. Masebo, do not just make such pronouncements from the blues. You have to have a plan and ensure you mobilize resources. We have heard such statements too many times before, and none of those has seen the day. It begs the question-how are you going to do that? We are waiting to see the blueprint for this, and how you will implement it. Good luck, Sylvia.

  18. Yes, that’s very feasible provided that other Ministries are on the same page as well ie. Transport, Finance, Labour, Home Affairs etc. Most importantly the President is also a tourist attraction hence should actively market Zambia for the right reasons and not just run his motor-mouth carelessly, when he is abroad.

  19. Dream on Masebo!!! The day Zambia will be the most preferred tourist destination pigs will grow wings and fly. Anyway Zambia is a land governed by liars and daydreamers so Masebo’s wild dreams are in order.

  20. @6 Nostradamus, you have cracked my ribs with your last line; “Masebo needs to introduce such thigh projects [sex tourism] as she is good at it too.”

  21. Blue Blood

Your pessimism will take you nowhere in your life as one great man once said
“Logic will get you from A to B….imagination will take you everywhere.” something that is lacking in our society today.

  22. HON. MADAM MASEBO, CONGRATULATIONS! APPOINT MEMBERS OF BOARDS OF DIRECTORS BY ADVERTISING AND ONLY GET THOSE WITH A VISION OF THE SECTOR. IN ADDITION, LUSAKA HAS A COMPARATIVE ADVANTAGE AND IS WELL POSITIONED TO HANDLE INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS AND INTO REGIONAL FLIGHTS!!!!!!!!! DOES IT MAKE SENSE TO FLY ALL THE WAY TO SOUTH AFRICA AND COME BACK TO ZAMBIA?????????? WE REMAIN WATCHING YOU MADAM

  23. Jay Jay be realistic. Zambia can never be the most preferred tourist destination. Countries such as Egypt, South Africa, Kenya, Zimbabwe attracts more and better tourists than the hippies that come to Zambia. Visit Livingstone, the so called tourist capital of Zambia, and you will prove me right. Compare the number of European and American tourists that visit Cape Town alone to the one for the whole Zambia and you will be surprised.

  24. American here. I agree with comments 4 & 14. I add that by improving Zambia’s infrastructure used everyday by Zambians (roads, electricity, sewerage) you will also attract more tourism in your cities. Ndola is a hidden jewel. Take advantage of the WTO mtg and pull tourist from Vic to Livingstone; that’s obvious. But let them know that it’s even better in Lusaka. You really need to boast about Mosi beer. Help hotels get modern facilities at all
Price points in all cities. I haven’t been to Mongu but if you help more tourists get there you will solve many problems at once. Help Zambezi Air fly overseas. The most courteous employees on any airline I have ever flown. Too bad they must fly in old tin cans.

  25. #35 Blue blood thats so true.We hold ourselves to very low standards in city cleanliness,in poor and unfriendly service at airports and we’re poor in running complex organizations to success such as the defunct zambia airways or zesco yet these do business that involves contact with tourists. If we ain’t serious about erratic pwr, cleanliness and excellent svc then we ain’t serious about attracting more tourists.Tourists by their nature are very demanding folks and we’ve proven we can’t deal with demanding stuff.

  26. Please less talk and more doing. Marketing is one thing, actually having something to market is another. In 1999 the Livingstone national park was full of animals from the moment you drive in you see wildlife, I went there in 2010 and we had to drive for hours just to find some Zebras. Pay the game rangers enough, fix up the l/stone roads, have incentives for the Zambian people in holiday destinations think outside the box not the same empty promises.
