Street Vendors have continued their businesses in the central business district despite the elapse of the government ultimatum for them to leave.
A check found the vendors conducting their businesses normally without any hindrances.
Last week,Lusaka Province Minister Gerry Chanda anounced that all street vendors in Lusaka including those on Lumumba road and Freedom way were expected to leave the streets in Seven days.
The Lusaka Province Minister said that he was working with the Ministry of Local government to clear the streets of Lusaka of vendors.
He further said that a survey carried out in Lusaka has revealed that there are about 5-thousand empty spaces in various markets in the city which the vendors can occupy.
Colonel Chanda also told ZNBC news that the new directive was not negotiable and government will not hesitate to act against those that will defy the order.
Also last week Lusaka Mayor Daniel Chisenga said that no vendor will be allowed on the streets after Sunday which has just past.
Lusaka City Council could not pounce on the vendors because of the Cervical cancer conference taking place at the new govt buildings. They are avoiding riots which will strain the security situation as well as cause emabarrasement to the govt. Wait until the conference ends then you will see the military as well armed policemen take over the streets and the vendors will be removed
Ain’t happening especially with the big man back in the house. In all probability the long term outcome of this clearout is in doubt because of political considerations especially since the vendors were given a carte blanche by Sata to occupy the streets in return for votes. Its tag team effort in bringing down zambia inc.
A LESSON HERE IS NOT TO MAKE UNWORKABLE STATEMENTS JUST BECOZ ZE MWINE IS OUT THE COUNTRY.
YOU WILL BE UNPOPULAR.
NKANDU LUO TRIED AND FAILED.
WHAT MORE .
Elo lwanya.
The machinations of politics. The vendors made up the majority of PF votes. What will PF do?
For one thing, I see the unending list of ultimatums as a sign of lack of vision. A clean up plan needs to be drown for the vendors. Start by building more markets for them. Require them to register for a vending license, allocate them space in the new markets.Once the streets are clear of vendors, then send Police to patrol them and prevent new vendors. Sponsor enterprenuer courses to enable them to grow their money.
THE STREET VENDOR SITUATION IS TRICKY AND SHOULD BE HANDLED WITH CARE. PF LIKE PREVIOUS MMD REGIME HAVE FAILED TO PROVIDE MEANINGFUL EMPLOYMENT. IN FACT PF OWES ITS VICTORY MAINLY FROM THE STREET VENDORS. KICKING OUT THE STREET VENDORS WILL NOT SOLVE PROBLEMS. COL CHANDA AND LUSAKA MAYOR DNAIEL CHISENGA SHOULD COME UP WITH LONG TERM SOLUTIONS. WE HAVE TOO MANY LOAFERS ON THE STREET AND THAT IS KEEPING THEM BUSY.
A president legalized vending…its insubordination for a minister to ban vending. The one who legalized it must stop it.Dirty country
