Agriculture and Livestock Deputy Minister, Lackson Kazabu, says there is need for the country to produce in excess of 101,397 metric tonnes of fish in order to satisfy the nation’s annual demand.

Mr Kazabu said it is for this reason that there is urgent need to invest more resources in the fisheries sub-sector to meet the country’s annual requirements for fish.

He observed that the fisheries sub-sector has potential to grow and be able to satisfy the national fish requirements.

The minister said this during the 15th graduation ceremony at Kasaka Fisheries Training Institute in Kafue.

Mr Kazabu said government attaches great importance to the fisheries sub-sector because it contributes significantly to food security and increased income for people.

He stated that government is aiming at developing the fisheries industry by encouraging both commercial and smallholder fisheries production through the use of sustainable fisheries management practices.

Mr Kazabu has urged management at Kasaka Fisheries Training Institute to prudently use the K747 million allocated to the institute this year in order for them to achieve their training objectives.

He noted with pleasure that the graduands have attained the necessary training which will help to enrich the knowledge of fish farmers in the country.

Mr Kazabu has since assured the graduands that about 716 positions were available in the department of fisheries, adding that Treasury Authority has already been granted.

And Kasaka Fisheries Training Institute Principal, Caiphas Mpaka, said the 39 graduands had successfully completed their certificate programme in fisheries Science at the institute.

Mr Mpaka said government should consider investing in infrastructure such as hostels, laboratory and library, saying currently female students were accommodated in the guest house.

He said the institute relied on the laboratory at National Aquaculture and Development Centre in Kitwe for the students’ practical lessons, saying this has proved costly for the institute .

And in a vote of thanks, one of the graduands, Oscar Akabana said the institute had limited training facilities, hence the need for the existing facilities and structures, such as the library and classrooms, to be renovated and expanded.

Mr Akabana also called on government to consider employing them so that they could contribute the growth of the fisheries sector in the country.

  1. This is definately a great potential in Zambia and a great business opportunity. Zambia’s fish is dominated by wild catch, which is not sustainable in the l run. In China acquaculture is run in the way we run chicken runs in Zambia, and China is the biggest producer and exporter of fish. In Zambia almost all the flesh is imported from either China or Zimbambwe.

  2. in luapula there are alot of places suitable for fish farming but the goverment doesn’t make use of these plases ………fish farming is needed in zedong

  3. #3 That’s one industry that would save our people in Luapula. Fish farming would be a very successful undertaking in that part of Zambia. So we need massive investment.

  4. I did not know that we import fresh fish from Zimbabwe. The majority of Zimbabweans I know do not even eat fish

  5. i have fish ponds on my farm but the price does not really really really excite me a good deal on the mkt and i can make more ponds.

Lets hope that not what the school leavers for ZNS will be tasked to do all year round killing off farmers like me

  6. There will be enough fish stock if only bembas removed their witchcraft fro rivers and lakes to create more room for new fish. Chosani vililomba imwe mfiti za chiBemba

  7. This is a great business opportunity within a country that blessed with fish rich lakes and rivers…you have a shortage of excess of 101,397 metric tonnes, I think its also a question of transport; Cold refrigeration transportation to market of fresh fish..I’m sure our local fishermen would meet demand if an  organise transporter was available to buy from them.

  8. GOVT CAN BOOST FRESH FISH PRODUCTION BY MAKING DRY ICE PLANTS AROUND FISHING AREAS. DRY ICE IS SOLID CARBON DIOXIDE WHICH IS ABUNDANT IN THE AIR. THEN FISH FARMING IS ALSO ANOTHER AREA THEY CAN LOOK AT AS OUR FISH POPULATION IN DEPLETED. CHICKEN MANURE IS GOOD FODDER FOR THE FISH. MR. MINISTER MAKING EMPTY STATEMENTS WITHOUT ANY ACTION PLAN IS NOT GOOD.

  9. Why not take into account the export market as well? Do you mean that this PF government is that mayopic?
