Construction of the 30,000 capacity Livingstone Stadium in Southern Province has been set for January, 2013.
Sports Minister, Chishimba Kambwili, who has toured the proposed site for the stadium says government is committed to ensuring that the project takes off early next year.
Mr Kambwili, who was in company of officials from the Ministry of Lands and the local council, has expressed satisfaction at the proposed site.
He notes that the site, which is at the entrance of the tourist capital, is big enough to house not only the football pitch but other sports disciplines as case is for Ndola.
Mr Kambwili notes that the stadium, once completed, will boost tourism and offer recreation to tourists who visit the tourist capital.
He says government will ensure that samples of the soil are quickly tested before undertaking the project.
Mr Kambwili has disclosed that government will soon send the Chinese contractors who built the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola to start the sample tests of the soil and later implement the project.
And speaking at the proposed site, Livingstone Mayor, Aggrey Njekwa, appreciated the efforts government is putting in to ensure that the stadium is quickly constructed.
Mr Njekwa says the stadium will be of great benefit to the local people who have had no modern stadium to boast of since independence.
Meanwhile Mr Kambwili is not happy with the state of sports facilities in the city.
He has directed the Provincial Sports Co-ordinator to ensure that all facilities are improved before the forthcoming United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) General Assembled slated for next year.
Mr Kambwili says once sports infrastructures are improved, youths in the city will be kept away from bad vices.
He says sports facilities will also offer recreation for tourists who will come to Zambia for UNWTO which Zambia is co-hosting with Zimbabwe.
Mr Kambwili was speaking after touring Malamba Stadium, Zambezi Sports Club and Livingstone Royal Golf and country club.
At Malamba stadium, the minister and his entourage were shocked to learn that the facility, which hosts league games, has no dressing rooms and proper toilets, a situation he described as dangerous for players.
Mr Kambwili says Maramba Stadium Management should not think that the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) is being kind by allowing the status quo to continue as players are put at risk in case of a riot.
He says he will ensure that the stadium is rehabilitated using the budgeted K100 million from the national budget for the provincial stadium.
The Minister is on a tour of sports infrastructure in Southern Province to ensure that all facilities are given a facelift before the UNWTO is hosted.

Tell us something new, some PF,  this project was started by Mwanawasa. You are actually delaying it, RB wanted it to start in June this year
and RB told you that himself, do have to condemn always? its not RB anymore my friend its pf and they have their own way of looking at things! Â you sound frustrated in all your commments, chill!
Talk about RB. That’s history. PF will build it. Just like they are building in Lusaka.
Its high time a Ministry of Construction was created you can’t have such projects being overseen by buffoons like Kambwili.
Kambwili is much better when it comes to results that Masumba who you want to run that cosntruction ministry
You clearly do not know what the role of a minister is…hence is easily swayed by overzealous noisy vessels like this buffoon!
You are asking for more Ministries!
REAL MEN AT WORK, PRESIDENT SATA AND HIS TEAM ARE A FOCUST TEAM, JUST HAVE A LOOK AT EVEN INFRESION RATE, IT IS NOW AT A SINGLE DIGIT…..”MICHEAL SATA MUSANKWA” ULEENDA….
I dont know where you are baba, but i can see english is not the language you use for communication…i like the way you have written inflation
For once talk of development not bembalization
Yes, let’s talk development and not Tongalisation. One Zambia, one nation.
It is a Chinese project the same Chinese whose faces his been poking with his big stenchy fingures.
PF will rule for 30 years
Stadiums before schools? Some of the classes our students have to learn in are truly atrocious and it all says we have our priorities upside down.
in as much as we are making progress in sports infrastructure, can we also be mindful of not creating white elephants around the country. Do we really have the need for so many stadius in the country?
I suggest we now focus on improving and maintaining universities. Am really shocked to see the state of our UNZA. Please Zambians lets support the Government by advising the leadership to put more resources to maintenance of UNZA and NRDC. lets educate more Zambians to record meaningful development. Kaunda did it, the current president can do it. Please people of my beloved Zambia, lets empower each other through education. infrastructure at UNZA and NRDC is pathetic. When is NRDC going to be a University. Let some of the donations be taken to tertiary education.
They are in the process of rehabilitating UNZA. Probably you never heard the demonstrations by students who insisted it would delay their academic year. Otherwise, the rehabilitation of UNZA would have started months ago.
#9 MINISTRY OF SPORTS IS VERY DIFFERENT FROM MINISTRY OF HIGHER EDUCATION. KAMBWILI IS THE MINISTER SPORT AND YOUTH …WHATEVER, SO HE IS DISCUSSING PROGRESS HE’S MAKING IN HIS MINISTRY. HE CAN NOT DISCUSS MAINTAINING UNIVERSITIES.
Can this same gesture be offered to primary and high schools which form the basis of sports recreation and discipline. “Ze Leopard”, can you also make sure that the already built infrastructures not only in southern province, but the rest of the country are renovated to good standards. Thank God mopani has stepped in to renovate Nkana stadium because it was worse than the high school grounds, more less like a dump site where human beings go to dump their waste and which they have been doing since the privatisation of ZCCM. It was worse than an ordinary pit latrine, a terrible eye sore.
honestly this started from the mmd era but a poor move for local gov. i’m sure a large hospital would have been betterÂ
Engineer Kambili, says samples of the soil must be tested hahahaha… what tests shall be carried out on the soil samples if i may ask?
He does not need to know that; technocrats will tell him like they told him that they are doing geotechnical tests. Thats all; bane, learn to differentiate between “ministerial posts that are political” and the posts that require technical knowhow. However, its your right to say what you wish; they call it freedom yaba kabwa ooh sorry, of speach.
Livingstone, what a worst of resources. Who will play there, the Livingstone Pirates vs Monze United? This sh##t of balancing provinces is worst of resources. That stadium was supposed to be in Mufulira or Chingola, the land of football.
Nostrodamus,
The stadium will promote sports tourism in Livingstone so that when Livingstone hosts a much between Zambia and Zimbabwe or other international matches, the tourist will also see the Victoria Falls.I hope you have seen the sense.
#15Nostrodamus ulichipuba. You’re talking nonsense!
i agree with no. 15. he is spot on
People learn to contextualise topics. You can not have a topic to do with sports infrastructure and you start talking about hospitals and universities. People, you need all these. For an educated (university), healthy (hospitals) nation needs to be active (sports/stadia). I am sure these different facets are being addressed. Project started when South Africa won bid to host World Cup of 2010. Zedians be analytical.
Ba Nyendule you are exposing your ignorance. Soil samples of the site are analysed for stability, consistency and other chemical and Physical properties. This is in order to ensure that a weight bearing structure like a stadium can stand for a long time. Any mega structure like a tall building requires this kind of soil testing. Can Eifel tower stand in sandy soils, shallow foundation ? Such parameters are required in engineering bakaamba.
With such infrastructure we can even bid to host the Africa cup of nations and later cohost the world cup with Angola
We should check the comments we post on this blog. Kambwili is Min of Sports, he cannot make comments on Education. Soil samples are supposed to be tested be it for small projects or big ones, this is to understand what type of foundation is suitable, and Cant we for some topics devorce tribes from issues at hand?
well spoken Mr. Minister, we need proper development in Livingstone and this is welcome ………….
Am impressed with the 3 new stadia, good for f/ball developement but u need a 4th so u can easily get to host afcon
