Labour Minister, Fackson Shamenda has said that the cost of labour in Zambia is very expensive.
Mr. Shamenda said that the high cost is mostly aggravated by delay in the completion of projects by Zambian contractors.
Speaking in Livingstone when he officially opened the Zambia Congress of Trade Unions Conference, Mr. Shamenda said that dialogue is therefore important in addressing labour issues in the country.
He said that the PF government needs to work with a strong and united labour movement in order to improve people’s livelihoods.
Meanwhile, ZCTU Second Deputy President, Humphrey Lungu said that labour unions in the country have spent more time quarreling with each other and trying to recruit members at than addressing issues affecting workers.
Mr. Lungu has called on union leaders to be credible before they can point fingers at government officials.

No wonder you can’ t your face,no vision for the country’s labor workforce…
How can you call yourself a Trade Unionist and utter such rubbish! So you were just taking the Zambian worker for a ride when you were ZCTU leader!? This should be a lesson for all workers; take a good look at Mwaba.
Ba Lt isnt ther a better pic than this?? Shams go and shave plizz.!!
After instituting a minimum wage… this man wakes up and says cost of labour is too expensive…
The country has really gone  to the DOGS
My brother, just get me a job in Australia this here is just beyond bullshit. The same person who almost had some one arrested says dialogue is important, and we just let him go scott free. I am so angry.
Is this not the same Shamenda who was besides himself regardig the minimmum wage today he turns around and say the cost of labour is high. He must resign this fool.
nichi silu ichi ai? uve bati.
I have always told u, i m a flip flop, yesterday i said our people are being exploited, today the cost of labour is too high!! CNPs
This is laughable coming from a man who has been in labour union for years; You should know better Papa Smurf  and if you had known better you would have thought twice about having minimum wage as you have increased costs even further.
@Jay Jay,Â
Please think about those relatives of yours in Kanyama, Kalingalinga, Mulenga and Kapoto, e.t.c before you make such a comment. You know how much they suffer with their jobs and yet they are paid peanuts. Even you in London, they pay you well for cleaning.Â
San Jose, Jay Jay is right. Shamenda is the one who should be thinking about what he says before he opens his mouth. Two months back, he increased the minimum wage saying it was too low. Yesterday he says the cost of labour in Zambia is too high. Surely, what did we do to deserve such ministers!
Is he joking?
I couldnt help but comment. This man is an *****. After instituting an increase in the minimum wage, the sucker wakes up today and says the cost of labour is too expensive in Zambia. I dont think this man i normal, seriously. This is stupidity. I cant believe this is coming from the same dirty mouth. It explains ifiko kukanwa. Ukabeyeko nemwenfu iwe wekakopo ka mudala. *****
What is the cost of labour? What is labour? Does this filthy looking man know what he is talking about?
Once a unionist always a unionist. The guy forgot that he is labour minister and was in charge of instituting the minimum wage without consulting anyone. If i was president he would get a fax while in livingstone terminating his job for contradicting government policy. Also want to agree with pipo saying that workers get peanuts. However the solutions is not min wage because such as policy is what is called pernicious policies i.e. polices that gradually hate the very pipo they were intended to protect. One way that min wage does that is loss of jobs. Even if it was the last resort implementation should have been done differently. For example the min wage should have been hourly rate and changes made to the law to allow people to hold more than one (to be continued)Â
the law should allow pipo to hold one than one job. Then employers would hire based on their ability to pay e.g instead of having a maid that sits around anyway for the whole week, I could say hire for 3 days of the week and they can work else where for the rest of the week. that is how most lowers jobs are even in the developed countries which allows a person to work different shifts supermarkets, restaurants, etc that way you would minimize  the effects min wage on both the employer and the target beneficiariesÂ
IT BEATS ME….WHAT A CONTRADICTION!!!! ARE THESE PEOPLE NORMAL?
today he crying that cost of labour is high.yesyerday he was the one increasing the minimum wages. is this man saneÂ
Eating to much lime!
Seeing a COW chewing grass, I can see the intelligence in a COW than listening to this Shamenda. His brain is as dirty as his beards.
This article is too short to make sense of what this leader actually said. Is it a shift of thinking?
another minister just about to pack his bags!!!
True. Don’t be quick to form an opinion. There’s obviously some crtical information missing from this article.
