Kabwe General Hospital receives ICU

HEALTH Minister Joseph Kasonde (c)

Government has donated an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to Kabwe General Hospital (KGH) in Central Province.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Health Minister, Joseph Kasonde, said government has fulfilled the responsibility of providing quality and holistic health care in a clean, caring and competent environment to Kabwe General Hospital by the providing ICU.

Dr Kasonde said it is the mandate of the government to improve the health status of Zambia through the strengthening of health service delivery.

In a speech read for him by his deputy, Christopher Mulenga, Dr Kasonde said the Ministry plans to set up ICUs in every provincial hospital countrywide among many other initiatives in strengthening the provision of quality health care.

Dr Kasonde said among other supportive plans of the Ministry that will greatly enhance the provision of emergency health services to hospitals include the provision of Ambulances to ensure the provision of critical care from the accident scene to the ICU facility.

Speaking at the same occasion Acting Provincial Medical Officer Beatrice Kafulubiti said the donation of the Intensive Care Unit will cut the cost of transferring critically ill patients in need of intensive care to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) in Lusaka.

Dr Kafulubiti added that the transfer of cases to UTH increased the risk to the patient and cost of care due to a number of reasons.

She appealed to government to further provide the hospital with more specialized diagnostic equipment, such as CAT Scan, which helps manage high trauma cases to enhance the provision of critical care in addition to the newly established ICU at the hospital.

And Kabwe General Hospital Medical Superintendent, George Chipulu, said the opening of the ICU at Kabwe General Hospital was a great relief to the hospital as it will save lives and alleviate the suffering of victims of the road traffic accidents and other disasters.

The ICU ward has been equipped with such instruments as 3 pulse ox meters, 4 ventilators, 2 ultra sonic nebulizers, 1 volumetric infusion pump and patients monitors among others.

  1. This is silly , how does Government donate to healthy facilities that they are primarily responsible for. Thats what government collect taxes for , it therefore not a favour to the people of Kabwe that GRZ is improving the healthy facilities at Kabwe General Hospital.

    • These guys think that they are doing us a favor by being in those dirty offices of their. They are running the country like their ntemba. We have nothing PROPER pa Zed. What a shame. 48 years my foot!

    • I’m surprise too. Perhaps its a result of limited vocabulary on the part of journalist but again the Acting Provincial Medical Officer Beatrice Kafulubiti is also mention to have acknowledged the donation.

  2. Why call it a donation people! This is not f***** right. It it government’s responsibility to provide services to its tax payers and all the have nots in society; government doesn’t donate to its own people!!

  3. ba minister there is nothing to blow your trumpet over here.over here, each health care center,
( rural hospital to you) is equipped with this icu, if the definition of an icu is pulse oximeter, volumetric infusion pump, ultrasonic nebulizers, ventilators, defibrillators, external pacers, ecg monitors, arterial blood gas and pressure monitoring and such. only difference is that they do not qualify to be icus but high dependence care units. lets not be satisfied with mediocrity

  4. This is the responsibility of the govt and they do not deserve any praise for simply doing their work. I wonder why it is being referred to as a donation though!

  5. What a govt of chancers! They are unsure whether they are going on coming. How can a parent possibly claim that I have donated a school uniform, book or pencil to their own school going child? Just because this CNP led govt is too shallow to differentiate its responsibility and that of private organisations do does not mean Zambians would equally not notice. Political mileage cannot be gained from something as obvious as a core responsibility of health provision. This is similar to Guy Scot public gift of K13million in Livongstone a few months ago. When is this bunch going learn that they are no longer in opposition and everything ngwee spent comes from tax payers and must never be classified as donated gift.

  6. Donated? Do Zambian journalists think? Govt can not donate. It is obliged to provide services from the tax it collects. This obligation is not supposed to be mistaken for benevolence.

  7. What a govt of chancers! They are unsure whether they are going or coming. How can a parent possibly claim they have donated food, a school uniform, book or pencil to their own school going child? This CNP led govt is too shallow to differentiate its responsibility and that of private organisations. let them be reminded, Zambians will not be fooled by their cheap photo opportunities. Political mileage cannot be gained from something as obvious as a core responsibility of health provision. This is similar to Guy Scot public gift of K13million in Livongstone a few months ago. When will this bunch learn that they are no longer in opposition and every ngwee, cent or penny call it what you like comes from tax payers and must never be classified as donated gift.

  8. This is a joke how can you equip an ICU with such basic iterms no blood gas machine ! No ET tubes,no blades,no arterial lines,no pleural catheters, no fluid warmers,no dialysis machine,no transducers,no ultra sound or cardiac echo machines and above all no qualified personnel to run the unit both doctors and nurses ,what a shame! How much did GBM get from this in form of commissions?Malashiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

  9. So it means only one patient on the infusion pump at a time or till dead ka?Honestly this is stupid in a proper ICU a patient might require up to 6 infusion pumps running at the same time!Kwena you are proper people fools(PF).

  10. If anything by now all hospitals in Zambia should atleast have 100 ICU equipments in each hospital, not this crap of having one in such big hospital.

  11. But honestly. what a joke. They are even showing off. You are not doing anybody any favor, you are obliged to do that silly GRZ, its your job which the people of Zambia employed you to be doing. You are our servants.DONATING DONATING NYO NYO This really upsets me

  12. The above mentioned does not even make the standard for a High Dependency Unit. It is just basic equipment which can be used to transport a patient to a tertiary institution. I hope they also bought ET tubes or LMA’s and accessories for safe intubation and transportation. Another issue is that not all doctors or nurses are capable intubating a patient in order to be mechanically ventillated. There is a global shortage of intensivists and ICU nurses. So lets not use words loosely. Zambia has a long way to go. By the quality of equipment been acquired, I can tell that the govt has been ill adviced. Then the issue of maintainance. ICU equipment need regular calibration and servicing by specialised personnel. Pa Zed pena Fi equipment fikaichita service! I rest my case!

  13. whether its donation or what, the fact is something has been done…Lets be positive. If these guys dont know what they are doing, why didnt the previous government donate or give as you put it.?

  14. Thieves broke into the Cancer Diseases Hospital in Lusaka last night and stole the MRI and Scan diagonistic equipment, computers and othe items thereby rendering the Cancer Hospital to close this morning. Such acts of vandalism has put the lives of many Zambians being treated at the Cancer Hospital at risk. Zambians should report any to the Police if anybody will be offering such equipments for sale and all patriotic Zambians in private clinics and hospitals should be alert if the administrations of these institution will be buying such stolen equipments.

  15. Well done , this is what we want in Zambia. Instead of all going to UTH, let them be treated in their provinces. Great move indeed.

  16. All of you insulters just watch out You can easily be traced. I ve got the Apache programme and you should know what it does

  17. MoH one ward adopted by Maureen Mwanawasa should atleast have a hand basin. we are tired cleaning kitchen utensils in the rust stained bath tab.
