PRESIDENT Michael Sata is concerned with the low number of Japanese tourists coming to Zambia.
And President Sata has invited Japanese investors to consider investing in Kawambwa Tea Company in Luapula Province.
ZANIS reports that speaking in Tokyo, Japan yesterday when he met that country’s Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, President Sata said the number of Japanese tourists coming to Zambia has been unimpressively low.
The President said this is despite Zambia and Japan enjoying diplomatic relations dating back to the time of Zambia’s independence.
This is according to a statement released to ZANIS in Tokyo today by President Sata’s Special Assistant for Press and Public Relations, George Chellah.
President Sata has encouraged Japan to seize the investment opportunity as Zambia co-hosts the 2012 UN World Tourism Organisation general assembly with Zimbabwe.
He said Japan could explore possibilities of investing in the tourism sector apart from its nationals coming to Zambia as tourists.
President Sata also urged the Japanese national airline to consider establishing a direct flight to Lusaka to help promote tourism between the two countries.
The President also said Zambia and Japan should consider easing restrictions of movements of people of the two countries by relaxing conditions on visa requirements.
And president Sata has invited Japanese investors to come to Zambia to invest in the Kawambwa Tea Company in Luapula Province.
The president said government is ready to give the tea company to the Japanese investors.
President Sata has, since urged Japan to also invest in the agricultural sector.
He said since the Japanese are good in textile, they would do well to support the production of cotton in Zambia.
ZANIS
developmental trips that s fine my presdo
Fine to invite the Japs Mr Sata but i hope you realize the Japanese are sticklers for cleanliness and order. Our towns are too dirty for their standards.
True that!!!Â
why calling them Japs-that’s a serious racial remark, I guess if we called you by your arab name of osama, terrorists, talibans,  jihads you wouldn’t like it; would you?
Uppercut, or even if I were to be called nigger, it would pain me, you know
@ uppercut 1st i honestly didn’t know that is considered a racist and 2nd NO i’m in no way Arab or arab looking.FYI the name Enka Rasha is Maasai & derived from my mom’s East african roots.
I would have thought it prudent to talk to the Japanese about the railways system which is on its knees. The Japanese are fundis in this sector. (Railways would be more important than tea in Kawambwa – obviously wrong priorities!). What plans has PF put in place to revamp the railways since they got it back from RSZ?
I agree – maybe the tea industry can be spearheaded by us Zambians and the Railway is a bigger fish
The man went to speak as a provincial leader and not as a national leader. He should have prioritised railways, town planning and rural development, water management and delivery, sanitation, and mining of rare earths which the japanese are crazy for in order to by-pass chinese supplies.
The kazungula Bridge should have been dealt with as a group with botswana and Japan instead of us signing an agreement alone as it is a joint project.
My friend i agree with you but development is an internal issue you cant call for people to come and develop your country you call for then to come and invest which in turn will then bring development…… The job of the government is to develop and invest in infrastructure which in turn will attract the investors its not the job of the investors to guild roads and bridges for you.
way to go Mr president, how many zambian tourists visit japan every year?twakwatako nensoni
#2, enka rasha, have you ever heard of kamata, down town of tokyo metropolitan city?
come and i will show you the dark side of nippon. what you must know is that japs will never show you their rubbish but only goodies. ask us mwana, we eat with them and know how to scratch them to reveal their hidden secrets
at least most ofthe towns are clean and the nation despite earthquake calamities is progressive in its development. Which town in Zambia can you say is progressive, orderly and clean? none…..shanties, street vendors, unplanned settlements, heaps of cabbage even in the capital, zambia is known for that, its a shame really
Where can you take someone in Zambia were its clean?
do u knw thathat Japan is the 3rd largest economy in the world?
Maybe if people stopped calling them “japs” some would come to visit?
# 4, u are unappreciative rat, surely this trip and the meeting was vital, railways are for the Chinese they are good at that. Please give credit where due, criticism should make sense, in ur case they are senseless.
@4. Kazungula bridge is a joint project between Zambia and Botswana. The Tswana were just waiting for Zambia to arrange for funding. Tswana don’t need Japanese money for their share of the construction costs. They said this in July last year. They said they will draw from their $5 billion reserves. It is Zambia that applied for a loan. Applications were made to the African Development Bank and the Japanese. It seems the PF government opted for a Japanese loan.
No matter how much you talk about dead companies in Northern,Luapula and Muchinga provices, nothing will come out of it for obvious reasons. It appears you have a regional president.

Regional President if you ask me? Talking about tea! forget it.
African attitude of entitlement … begging as taken another level. Where african presidents have become arrogantly asking for investment. You don not even have a nationa carrier you go ask the japanese airlines to fly to zambia, airlines don’t just fly bwana they have to make money first, if they find tourist interest in zambia, they will definitely fly into Lusaka.Zambia is an expensive tourist destination … start at home, harmonise the industry, remove alot of bottlenecks. Asian tourists go for cheap destinations like South Africa, Australia, etc. Do your homework don’t just waffle like people owe you investment and development.
some bloggers are happy that the president is bringing investment. Begging pliz!!!
Cant we be ashamed of ourselves going to beg when we have educated zambians, some with the moneys bt cant still invest in their countries!! Africa is truly for africans. no thinking!! my God!!
This chap is really a provincial leader, just look at his cabinet and seniors in parastatals. Zambia will develop another white elephant like mobutos badolite. yaba!
SATA should stop wafflering.
If memory is not failing me the Japanese many years ago built us a state of the arts broadcasting facility with all equipment supplied to make any kind of program. I recall being taken on tour of the facility and doors being unlocked for one unused room after the next. It was explained that there were not enough people trained to actually work it to capacity. It had an impressive archive which the Swedish went in to help digitalise. My point is lost in there somewhere. Whether through loan, aid or other, we get a facility. Time to invest in tech education locally. We also need to start designing means of developing our own resources.
#8 correction: African Development Bank (AfDB) approved a loan for Kazungula bridge last year. AfDB loan is just part of the project financing. Other funds have to be sourced by benefiaciary countries to meet the full cost of the project. For almost 1 year, everybody is waiting for Zambia to put its part.
The best to ask from the Japanese is technology-based infrastructure NOT asking them to grow cotton or tea. Ask for assistance to make industries that add value to our raw materials. That is where we should be heading.
Was the president about to leave when the pic was taken?
Otherwise that looks like serious lack of courtesy. When a japanese avoids eye contact like in the picture above just know he is NOT happy………I hope its not the case.
True, Sata is the president of Muchinga and no wonder he travelled half way around the world to root not for Zambia but Muchinga Kawambwa. This Kawambeese stinks! I also hear Sata is billed to wrestle grand champion yokozuna Asashoryu at the Yasukuni Shrine (???? or ????) shrine located in Chiyoda, Tokyo. Apparently Sata believes he gained a lot of Sumo wrestling experience wrestling elephants, baboons and you nake in in the NaBwalya jungle so he reckons he will defeat Asashoryu. Pray for Zondwe!
Where do you get this hatred from? I have never hated or said anything bad to a lozi or tonga!!! Right now I have my southerner friend’s duaghter and son from Zambia that I have sponsored here in Brisbane at uni. Why brother???.
I also know that the goverment is not the most ipressive but it’s Zambia that put it there. Dont hate everybody.
Please kindly take a closer look at the above picture, well I notice the Japanese fellow has disapproving unwelcoming looks. The Japanese is a racist because he cannot even proudly walk with our fellow African as a visiting head of state despite of huge economic inequalities back in Zambia. We demand equal recognition of the Sata as a head who should be treated just like the way the Japanese would respect Obama or a British prime minister. I do not like racists, I’m tired of racists both here in my backyard (S.Africa) and overseas. Sata is not my role model but I will support him in the event that he falls as a victim of racism.
# 20 Are you that daft that you do not even know that Kawambwa is in Luapula province which is way far from Muchinga? U ought to be ashamed of yourself. Are you that pregant with hatred for Sata that you cant even take a moment to check your Geography knowledge before you spew your bile?
Sata is 100% right on this proposal of attempting to lure the Japanese to invest in tea industry in Zambia in that world tea prices are currently very attractive and they are set to continue climbing the lader in the future. Unlike other agricultural primary products, tea is a promising commodity to be taken advantage of. I am a very staunch critic of the PF regime but if it is trying to make a positive contribution, let us give it the credit it deserves. Note that even non-Bembas will benefit there in Kawambwa. Viva HH, UNPD. PEACE to all Zambians
Wat about housing investment Mr presido, good muv though
Ba presido you should smile please. Maserous ya boza sure
#6, leave #2 alone. Nambala #2 is right. Zambia is too dirty for many tourists. We know that there are few places in many developed nations which are dirty. But you can’t compare those places to Lumumba or Soweto market rubbish. Sata should reverse his directive for street vending if he wants more Japanese tourists. Tourist now look up a country before they go there. The Internet has made it easy for us to see clean and dirty nations.
He’s not right, first by calling Japanese Japs, that’s a racial remark secondly by saying Zambia is too dirty- really how do you expect to develop by saying Zambia is too dirty to call for FDI’s from MNE’s???Â
Dear N# 6 You, so called Zero option ! what are you talking about ! l reside in Tokyo for many years so far and I know Kamata well.
