Renard: We Won But Played Badly

Share

Herve Renard has conceded that Zambia played badly against Uganda and it would have been different had Rainford Kalaba been fit play.

The TP Mazembe midfielder missed Zambia’s dramatic 9-8 shootout win over Uganda to qualify for the 20134 Africa Cup due to a groin injury.

“I am happy with the qualification of course but not with the game we played yesterday but that is football,” Renard said.

“When you are not playing with Rainford Kalaba like the quarterfinals in 2010 (Africa Cup) it is not good news but the most important thing is to be strong.

“We missed Kalaba and we missed Jacob Mulenga.”

Mulenga also missed the match following the death of his father earlier in the week.

Zambia were outplayed by Uganda in Kampala and who beat the 2012 African champions 1-0 forcing the game to be decided on post-match penalties after finishing 1-1 on aggregate.

Renard’s side now awaits the draws to be made on October 24 in Durban.

  1. I agree Renard but hey, there’s a funeral in Uganda. They and other teams in Africa will know Zambia as a team that can rain on your parade, anytime time. Ask Ghana, Senegal and Ivory Coast. Well done boys!

  2. Now renard u can tender yo resignation it will b accepted.infact it will b good 4yo CV.i doubt u will produce results in south africa.

  3. Find someone to fill in the void if and when Kalaba is unavailable. Since you know the area of concern, then the problem is half solved.

  4. renard is right. Kalaba was greatly missed. The boys play as a team and if one member is missing naturally the difference will be noticed. Look at all the biggest teams in the world. Their coaches are always worried when their key players are injured. They do not hide this fact. They come out and talk about it openly.mainly before a game. It is not someting taboo. Lastly i just feel skipper katongo should now be rested and the captainship be given to mweene.

    • I agree that Katongo has done his job, and we are very grateful, but Mweene would be more inspiring from now on, until further notice.

  5. CONGRATS CHIPOLOPOLO!
Question: What’s the difference between the sub-standard performance we saw from our beloved boys in Uganda AND that for which Dario Bonetti was FIRED?

    • Bonneti was RB’s lap dog, you can not have a coach who was always on European tour. He never lived in Zambia nor watched the premiere league games when there where no international games. Renard you even find him in Chelstone for the Arrows game of Division one games in Mufulira or Matero. Bonneti is not a bad coach but he really showed that he would only arrive like the pros 1 week or 5 days before international games. Thats why we had three coaches, Bonetti and his assistant and Honour Janza who should be techinical advisor but was standing in.

  6. I saw Chris being affected psychologically. Friends be careful with the comments we make. Katango has gone up to grade 12 and as such he uses the internet and he reads as well. Stop letting our country down. Katongo is hard working and he is the one who has made it possible for us to qualify to SA. Imagine if Katongo did not score in Ndola! What would have been the result. Also if he had scored in Uganda, we would have won the match early.
I saw the gap between Nkausu and whoever played in front of him throught the match. In fact even that goal for Uganda was as a result of that gap. Mbola accounted himself well even though the commentator did not notice that.

    • Thats so true, i agree with you. It must be painfull to him reading negative critisism when his contribution to zambian football has been massive. We destroy him by our negativity

  7. Stop saying we played badly, the boys followed your instructions to defend at the same time i dont see any difference between the game against UG played in Ndola and this one all marubbish by zambia.

  8. THIS IS AN IRRESPONSIBLE STATEMENT FROM A COACH: Kalaba’s absence cannot be the reason for our failure to play well. Nkausu, Katongo and Mbola did not have a good game. What did the disorganised and indicisive nature of these players got to do with Kalaba’s absence? Learn to read the game properly Renard and make the right changes quickly. Williams (Uganda Coach) would have hammered us if he were the one with Zambia’s calibre of players, so wake up now, we are up against stronger opposition now that we’re going to AFCON.

  9. Renard i don’t agree totally with you and your technical team. We have enough talent to cover Kalaba and Jacob..
The problem is  with your team selection i know you want to work with disciplined players.
But what is happening with players like Clifford Mulenga and Given Singuluma who are on top of their careers.
Are you going to still maintain your stance and deny Zambians an opportunity  to watch good football.
It is embarrassing to watch the african champions under perform like that?????
You have got to do something about this otherwise you are not worth to continue coaching Zambia.

  10. I just think as Champions we should not have hard to go through this to get to SA only paying attention now because we are the champions lol…
We should or should i say the champions of Africa regardless which country it is… shout get automatic qualification to defend what they won in previous tournament …Kwasila

  11. First I APOLOGIZE for launching Katongo’s negativity. I never expected people could follow my way of watching soccer.
First: The all team is pathetic, no entertainment at all. It is better Zambia start playing with just 3 players: Mweene, Chansa and Kalaba. Then Chisamba Lungu as a substitute, those 4 can still beat Uganda.
Second: Captainship should go to either, Mweene, Chintu, Chivuta or Kasonde. We have messed up Chris Katongo badly (My apologize again).
Third: Renard is a disaster himself, its only in Zambia he can get a job. Trace his history. Even Keegan or Msiska can do much better than that pompous French womanizer.

  12. bla bla bla….just wait for South Africa. We won the game and Uganda is crying right now. But of course Ba Renerd do something to sharpen up you boys. Teach them to score and holding on to the ball.

Peace and Prosperity to Mother Zambia.

  13. what is important in the game of football colleagues,is a win and subsquently a qualification which our boy did,let us be proud of our own Zambian team.

  14. we won.. freedon fight…. alll one strong and free. Rehnard u have admitted we won with luck, Uganda prepared for us big time. Other teams in RSA will be rooting to beat Zambia so the result in Uganda’s Namboole Stadium is a wake up call.

  15. Chaps you must learn to be progressive. What we needed was just to qualify regardles of how the boys played. We are in the game in SA. I have seen English teams play so badly yet win. What is important is to win not how people play. That is why I do not support Arsenal in England, they play very well and entertain people but at the end of the season they have nothing to show for that. Just like a cute woman admired by every one but can not bare children…ma rubbish chabe. VIVA Chipolopolo see you in SA period.

  16. What we must not forget is that despite being African Champions we are still a work in progress. We havn’t reached heights where we can consistently play matches at a high performance level. Sometimes good teams play badly but effectively. Ala bane this is football. Cameroon beaten by Cape Verde – who would’ve thought that could happen? Lets stick together with the coach and players even though I totally agree that Given Singuluma and Clifford should be given a fair chance.

  17. Mr Renard how many times do we have to listen to the story “we did not play well”. I now strongly believe this guy should be fired for the following reasons 1) Njobvu is not attacking midfielder but a defensive midfielder, chansa is not a winger – why put players in wrong positions? 2) The Uganda coach has outthought him twice only players experience got us out of the mess 3) Keagan Mumba a local Zambian coach clearly thinks you are not up to scratch tactically. 4) Your team selection is biased leaving out experienced players for youngsters (Clifford, Singuluma?) The biggest positive for him is that he has given us a fighting spirit which was not there. which means he is more a psychologist than a coach. Please fire this guy now!!! We have had enough of these pathetic performances.

  18. We somehow scraped through to the final. The team can still be fine tuned and will perform better in RSA. Let us not just give wholesale condemnation but let us wait and see. When the team was leaving for AFCON 2012, it was completely written off by many soccer pundits but we proved them all wrong. Therefore let us wait and see.Am sure HR and the technical team will reinforce the team and as well as prepare the team adequately

  19. This issue of camping outside SA. Ever any of you thought about how many days it would take to connect to a place like Lome or Dar es Salaam from China or Holland or UK? I think its is easier to camp in SA and charter a flight to arrive 2 days before a game.

  20. @ augustine my brother, Katongo is okey even to maintain the captainship. @ Nostradamas, you are a man for accepting the wrong. Chris is okey but what we say is what affected him psychologically. Remember Chris was named “Tsunami” in SA. He won the golden boot there. He scored more than any player (equaly Mbesuma did it). He is still young ( remember Cafu). He went to Germany and played for a strong team even the likes of Renard did not play for. Katongo is hard working and we need such players. I appreciate Mweene a lot but he only stopped one spot kick in that match just as the Ugandan goal keeper. Mweene is good (but I like making comparisons among the goal keepers in Africa) in order to rate one high. I remember Efford Chabala stoping 4 spot kicks there in Kampala around 1984/1985.

  21. Again @ Nostradamus; you are right about Renard,I rate him as an average coach not one very qualified ( or having high capability). Pausen is better than him.

  22. Considerate #33. The goal minder for Cote De Ivoire plays in europe. My question is, how many penalty kicks did he save against zambia in the last CAN? Answer zero. Gentlemen we should give praise where it is due. Kennedy mweene saved Zambia’s b**t. Uganda was determined. I cant even blame Chris katongo as other bloggers are. The young man has shown that he is a great leader. By the Efford chabala saved 3 penalty kicks not 4 in the 1984/85 east & central Senior Challenge Cup.Just in case u want to know the scorers for zambia: kalusha bwalya (Muf. Wand), Willie Chibwika (GBFC) & Lucky Msiska (power Dyn)

  23. Congrats to the boys for the Job wll done,Those of you who have seen the seeding will agree with that Pot 2 and 3 contains some tough teams.Pot 4 are the giant killers in the name of Cape Verd, and Ethiopia. My humble advice to FAZ and tthe Coach,PLEASE PLEASE! COMMENCE PREPARATIONS NOW.Make use of the FIFA days to play friendlies. We may pick Tunisia,Morrocco or Algeria,so lets arrange a friendly with Egypt, Libya,Gabon,Cape Verd Islands,Mali.Remebber we are on a coalition course wit eithe Ivory coast ir Ghana .As for the selections, please recall Mbesuma and clifford.they are are on fire in the PSL.
