Lusaka province minister Colonel Gerry Chanda has described the move by some opposition leaders to shun this year’s independence celebrations as childish.

Colonel Chanda says it is sad to see individuals aspiring to lead the country not respecting the current office holder who was put in office by the people of Zambia.

He says some leaders of the opposition have just proved to the citizens that they do not deserve to be leaders of this country because they do not respect the choice and decisions that the citizens make.

Speaking in an interview, Colonel Chanda says it is now a clear indication that some politicians only want to ascend to power for selfish motives and not to serve the nations.

He states that what the opposition has done is not just an insult to the people of Zambia but to the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the country to enjoy the freedom it is currently enjoying.

Colonel Chanda says it is wrong for any opposition leaders to justify their action by claiming that the PF whilst in opposition was also shunning state functions.

Colonel Chanda defended his party by stating that the PF was not shunning the functions deliberately but due to non invitation.

And India has wished Zambia the best as it celebrates its 48th independence anniversary today.

Indian high commissioner to Zambia Ashok Kumar says India is happy to see that the country has continues to enjoy its peace and tranquility.

Mr. Kumar says India continues to enjoy the friendly and historic relationship that exists between the two countries.

Speaking to QFM, Mr. Kumar says India looks forward to a continued partnership for the mutual benefit of the two countries.

Zambia today celebrates its 48th independence anniversary under the theme: “Celebrating 48 years of Independence with vision, hard work and unity.

Meanwhile, The Freedom Fighters and Democracy Association of Zambia (FFDAZ) has called for incorporation of issues that affect its members in the current constitution.

Eastern Province Chairperson, Frank Banda, said freedom fighters want to see their submissions included in the new constitution.

He was speaking at this year’s Independence celebrations held at David Kaunda stadium in Chipata today.

Meanwhile, Defence Minister Geofrey Mwamba who officiated at the same occasion, said Zambia has achieved great unity since independence in 1964.

And Mr. Banda said the new constitution should include the recognition of freedom fighters and their families affairs by way of providing for them even after death.

Mr. Banda also called for the introduction of a syllabus at primary school level to teach pupils on the struggle for the Independence of the country.

The Former freedom fighter also advocated for the freedom fighters to participate in good governance.

‘’ We need to be nominated as Members of Parliament and also councillors in the wards,’’ Mr. Banda said.

And Mr. Mwamba however noted that though independence was realised over 40 years ago, most people were still living in abject poverty.

He said he was however glad to note that the Patriotic Front government was implementing policies and programmes to reduce poverty.

Mr. Mwamba observed that there was need for a lot of sacrifice by all well meaning Zambians to successfully achieve government’s vision.

‘’ Zambia is endowed with a lot of natural resources which we must utilise to develop this nation. We all need to unite because unity is cardinal in any meaningful development programme,’’ he said.

Mr. Mwamba said Zambians should put aside their political differences and move forward for their common goal.

‘’ There should be self denial and self sacrifice because government is in a hurry to address pertinent issues in sectors such as education and health among others,’’ he noted.

This year’s independence celebrations theme is celebrating 48 years of independence with vision, hard work and unity.

  1. This is absurd

My Independence is me and Nick spending some ‘special times’ and moments
I am tired of hearing about our independence

It means nothing to me LT, absolutely nothing

I am so annoyed, it is unreal, someone pass me a ‘tear gas’ canister so i disperse the unwashed masses commenting on this.

    Thanks

    • Ya MCS must also be very very childish since he is the one who introduced boycotting such events! GBM still in office!!! I think MCS feels like a little kid who has always dreamt of getting onto a plane…once airborne the kid thinks he wants out! The post are also caught in between they can no longer say goodies about MCS since he is harborring a criminal GBM….interesting stuff. i am looking foreword to 2016!

  2. Col. Chanda would have been wiser to shut his mouth. His description of childish leaders fits in well for his own PF President who refused to attend independe celebrations when Mwanawasa and RB were at State House. This is a very big insult to Mr. Sata.

  3. Most Zambian politicians are a rare breed when it comes to waffling and Zambians themselves are so docile that they take any yap yap yap as gospel truth.

  4. Sata and his PF refused to attend government functions including independence. What has changed today? what colonel Chanda is saying is that Sata and the PF are also childish because they also refused to attend.

  5. Don’t worry. Some will, some won’t. That’s the way we get by. Its your time let them wait for their time, if it ever will come. God knows who will be ruling in 2016. Some will ever be in oblivion, yes in minority opposiyion for ever and ever. This is comptetition. the winners will be and the loosers will be. This is reality. Keep watching, of PF applies the right winning formular 2016 will be for PF. turf luck will be to the loosers, they will continue boycotting, thats yhe nature of loooooozzzzeeers. Loosers always blame someone or something. The winners praise their efforts.

  11. – Stop being frivolous Col. Chanda must be fired for proving to people what his President used to behave, very childish indeed.
Leave our GBM alone please, he is a solid defense minister, he is doing a better job than Col. Chanda.
